Why is Rite Aid in trouble?

Rite Aid has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing a challenging environment for drug stores, a runner-up status to larger chains, and expensive legal battles for allegedly filling unlawful opioid prescriptions. The bankruptcy was not a surprise, as Rite Aid’s bigger rivals, CVS and Walgreens, are also facing similar problems, closing stores, and Amazon and big-box chains like Walmart, Target, and Costco offering more customer-friendly alternatives. However, Rite Aid is in worse financial shape than its competitors and is unable to weather the industry’s downturn.

Rite Aid, a company facing high rent costs for underperforming stores, has closed over 200 struggling locations in recent years. The latest closure will impact over 170 stores in Michigan. A notice of additional closures was filed in June, including 27 more stores in Michigan and Ohio, five of which are in Metro Detroit. Rite Aid previously announced 19 other stores closing in the state last year and 12 additional stores.

What happened to Walgreens buying Rite Aid?

In 2015, Walgreens attempted to buy Rite Aid for $17. 2 billion, but the deal fell through due to the Federal Trade Commission’s refusal to approve it. In June 2017, Walgreens canceled the merger and bought 42 of Rite Aid’s stores for $4. 38 billion. A recent lawsuit accuses Walgreens Boots Alliance of downplaying antitrust regulator scrutiny, with the settlement still requiring approval from a federal judge in Pennsylvania.

What was the downfall of Rite Aid?

What was the downfall of Rite Aid?

Rite Aid’s bankruptcy was a result of multiple factors, including debt, opioid-related lawsuits, and a struggle to compete against larger companies like CVS, Amazon, and Walgreens Boots Alliance. In 2017, after a failed merger with Walgreens, Rite Aid sold almost 50 of its stores to Walgreens for $5. 18 billion. The money raised helped reduce debt but also shrinked the chain, relying on fewer stores to compete with growth-focused competitors. As the company continued to struggle, more locations closed, making it harder for Rite Aid to compete.

The sale of the stores became a death spiral when combined with debt and legal troubles. Executives must focus on core competencies and understand their leverage and sustainable conditions when navigating troubled waters. Rite Aid missed an opportunity to reduce debt and refocus on its core business, leading to billions of dollars lost and a competitor growing even larger.

Who is the rival of Walgreens and Rite Aid?

Rite Aid, a major player in the drugstore segment of the retail industry, faces competition from CVS Health, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Walmart, and pharmacy departments of major national supermarkets. Independent pharmacies also face competition. Rite Aid has completed several mergers and acquisitions and relies heavily on partnerships, such as acquiring Michigan-based Perry Drugs in 1995 and forming a relationship with General Nutrition Companies (GNC) to provide its products within Rite Aid locations. The company operates about 2, 500 stores in 19 states and employs over 51, 000 people. It reported revenue from continuing operations of $21. 9 billion and a net loss of $469. 2 million.

Are Walgreens and Rite Aid the same?

In 2017, Walgreens announced the cancellation of its merger with Rite Aid, offering to purchase 2, 186 stores for $5. 18 billion, plus a $325 million cancellation penalty. A revised deal was made, with Walgreens purchasing 1, 932 locations for $4. 38 billion, approved by the FTC on September 19. The revised sale was completed in March 2018, leaving Rite Aid with around 2, 600 remaining stores. Three distribution centers and related inventory were transferred, and most stores were rebranded as Walgreens.

In February 2018, Albertsons announced plans to acquire the remainder of Rite Aid in a merger of equals, but the plan failed to please shareholders and was cancelled on August 8, 2018. In October 2020, Rite Aid announced the acquisition of Bartell Drugs, a Seattle-area chain, for $95 million, which faced criticism from customers due to staff turnover and computer system glitches.

What is the difference between CVS and Rite Aid?

Rite Aid and CVS offer similar products, a brighter atmosphere, and rewards programs. CVS has more locations and more states, making it a more accessible drugstore option. However, choosing a better overall winner is challenging due to their similar ranking in most categories. Rite Aid may be the only option for many people due to its fewer locations. If living in a nearby area, both stores are comparable, making them a reasonable drugstore option.

Is Rite Aid doing bad?

Rite Aid, a retail pharmacy chain, has been closing stores since filing for bankruptcy, resulting in a drop from 2, 500 to 1, 554 stores as of early August 2024. This is nearly 1, 000 fewer than the company operated three years ago. The downsizing coincides with a broader shift in retail pharmacy, with CVS and Walgreens also reducing their store count. The company’s downsizing has had ripple effects, with GoodRx estimating that Rite Aid’s closures would reduce its profits by at least $5 million. The company has not provided a target number of locations as part of its bankruptcy plan.

What is the Rite Aid scandal?

Rite Aid, founded in 1962 as Thrift D Discount Center, faced an accounting scandal in 1999 when it began restating earnings due to accounting irregularities. Six former Rite Aid senior executives were convicted of conspiracy in 2003 for accounting fraud and false filings with the SEC. The company changed its name to Rite Aid Corporation in 1968 and moved its stock to the New York Stock Exchange in 1970.

Rite Aid’s growth was marked by acquisitions like Envision Pharmaceutical Services in 2015 and two merger deals with Walgreens and Albertsons. Former Rite Aid executives admitted to overstating net income between 1997 and 2000.

  • The issue isn’t the use of the technology, but the fact it was kept secret. Legally, a contract isn’t valid unless all parties involved have full disclosure. Can the company legitimately claim it informed customers that it was using facial recognition technology to identify and track them? If not, then it violated their rights. Of course, a lawsuit would depend on how that information was used. Either way it’s going to hurt the company’s reputation. It’s too bad, because had they been open and upfront about their use of facial recognition, it probably would’ve helped their business.

  • I’ve worked for Rite Aid for a long time and I’ve climb the ranks of Rite Aid and our facial recognition doesn’t work like that sometimes it works the wrong way when people give the wrong names but it was pretty effective in keeping some of the people that steal every day out without that system some of us have been threatened with us not knowing who’s walking in our stores some people have got really bored income behind our counters and threaten our cashiers it’s like the wild west a lot of us have started to resign the company has change so much we’re no longer using that system but I wish we were still using it it would protect us a lot in stopping things that could happen before it happens is it is got very dangerous to do the job of just wanting to serve your community and people a lot of us have stepped down and stopped

  • I’ve actually known about this for a number of years. The cosmetic area is the number one area were theft occurred in my local Walmart according to people that work there. The second place that the shoplifting takes place is in the electronica division. Also not known to most people is that the stuff you buy at fleamarket’s and online at real low prices is generally stolen merchandise. These companies go to the flea market for example look at the merchandise there and handle it and at the same time take a picture of the person selling it. Additionally there is a code on many of the packages which the camera also records and it identifies the purchaser for example it maybe Walgreens. That information gets entered into a database with facial recognition and when you step in that store there’s a high likelihood that you’re a thief. In spite of all of this stuff apparently Rite Aid makes money in these neighborhoods and if things continue to get worse and they will, they will simply close the stores. Recently I was told the number one item in the hair care area stolen from Walmart are products for African-American women. This is not a particular problem at my local Walmart because we are in a rural area, additionally the cleanliness of the stores the attitude of the workers and the areas in general are a lot worse in larger cities where unfortunately a lot of scum lives. I feel sorry for people who behave themselves and don’t disrespect others or their property. Edited for grammar.

  • There are entire hubs that store and keep this type of data . In every neighborhood. In every commercial industrial area in the city. In every energy efficient water saving product manufacturing location. In every satellite cable TV carrier headquarters. In every city hall red light camera feed station. In every home security system…in every phone..every smart TV. Every laptop computer equipped with a camera….. ECT ECT ECT. I could go on and on. You don’t really want to know how far it’s gone. 💯

  • ABOVE ALL OUR MOST POWERFUL WEAPON IS TO PRAY!!! PRAY FOR ALL THAT IS EVIL & CORRUPT TO BE REVEALED. PRAY FOR TRUE JUSTICE & EQUAL RIGHTS UNDER GOD’S LAW!!! PRAY FOR TRUMP WHO IS BATTLING THE ENEMY & AS A CONSEQUENCE IS BEING ATTACKED 360 DEGREES, DAILY!! GOOD NEWS GOD HAS HIS BACK & WILL ANSWER ALL RIGHTEOUS PRAYERS!! NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE PEOPLE’S POWER COLLECTIVELY. ONLY THROUGH PEACEFUL MEANS WILL TRUTH & VICTORY PREVAIL!! AMEN 🤔

  • I’m loss prevention at a rite aid locating and we had that facial recognition system. And it was a flop. It only worked once 100% but they other times it was very off in trying to attach a person that had just walked in. It’s no longer used in our store. It was taken out. I don’t know why. This was like 3-4yrs ago

  • Rite Aid also has a policy of telling employees to leave people who refuse to wear masks alone. If my Wife catches Covid,I will file a Civil suit for refusing to protect their employees lives from ignorant people.I careless if you wear one or not. This family is choosing to wear them.A corporation should enforce masks when they have a work force working Hard threw this pandemic,so they can make Millions of dollars while the workers make peanuts.

  • Walmart took a facial recognition of me about 2 months ago my whole face was highlighted in red. It’s because my card declined it was broke not working right, then my new card was being declined at Walmart, it’s like China is running Walmart. It’s like we are human rats at the mercy of these companies YOU CANT HAVE MY PICTURE OR MY INFORMATION I felt violated against my will. I wanted to defend myself!!!! Take my picture back 🤬🤬. Snap chat takes facial recognition and it downloads all your personal pictures from your personal phone to Facebook, total violation. WHY?

  • The US also ready has the equivalent of China’s “social reputation score,” the social credit scoring system. It’s operational and being used already. The penalties for undesirable behavior just haven’t been inacted yet. But they ARE very much keeping score … of EVERYthing, every post, every tweet, etc..

  • Absolutely no one can complain when they openly invite and accept that with their phones, internet and TV subscriptions, open mic always listening devises etc etc etc. Locations GPS tracking and photos are all given away by users all day everyday. People just accept all licence agreements without hesitations. Big brother is not the worry, given one company authorization to all your life means you gave it to even 3rd party companies. You are more likely to be hurt by those companies or employees of those companies and lack of security around that information. The creepy basement dweller geek decides he wants to open and view your loved one’s phone, because he can. THAT is what scares me.

  • Who’s the Orwellian person who created the b-roll for this report? They report the facial recognition software was used in predominantly low-income and non-white neighborhoods (0:15), then they show b-roll of a pretty white girl being surveilled, as if she were the primary target, when that clearly was not the case. The racial lies need to stop. More stringent security measures exist in nearly every retailer that does business in such areas and it’s driven by their loss prevention (theft) data. They put these practices into place where people steal from them, and even more importantly in places where the local racists order the police not to enforce shoplifting complaints or the DAs don’t prosecute them (like San Francisco). If you’re running a business, you can’t operate that way.

  • I am not trying to advocate for this, but lets put china issue aside (i do not know what is the value of picture of me valking in to RiteAid can possibly be), if this would be American company software, thats it, no more issue? I mean, let this not shock you, but usually, stores add up value of a stolen goods to markups, bumping up prices of items on the shelves. So thank you RiteAid for fighting theft so you can keep prices lower. Also, each and every one of us shows his/her face to hundreds-thousands of others every day, do you hide your face and RiteAid with their vivious cameras revealed your secret – thst you have a face? What is the problem? Wait if God forbid china puppet Joe will win election then we we all will live under rule of CCP dictatorship. But this, now, store is trying to protect itself using a technology? I am ok with that. Years ago they would catch a thief and chop of a finger then another then a hand – not a bad practice, With this article Fox really did a huge favor for thievs.
