Ronald McDonald, the iconic clown mascot of McDonald’s fast-food chain, has disappeared from marketing materials in recent years. Although officially retired, McDonald’s nonprofit, Ronald McDonald House Charities, still uses his name. Ronald was once one of the most recognizable mascots in the franchise, with his bright red hair, yellow jumpsuit, and playful demeanor. He was first portrayed on TV by Willard Scott in 1963 and can still be found in a few restaurants worldwide today.
McDonald’s announced its mascot Ronald McDonald would be taking a hiatus in 2016, following a disturbing craze where pranksters jumped out at people. Although Ronald remains a figure in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Logo, only his striped arm features. However, since then, McDonald’s has not officially announced a comeback from hiatus for the iconic character.
Despite having his own verified Instagram handle, Ronald has not posted anything since 2021. His absence from marketing materials is partly due to the negative publicity surrounding him. Ronald remains a figure in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Logo but only his striped arm features.
Despite the disappearance of Ronald McDonald from marketing materials, he remains a cultural phenomenon for McDonald’s, as he has held the “Chief Happiness Officer” role for over 50 years.

📹 The Convoluted History Of McDonald’s Characters
McDonald’s has a menagerie of characters who romp about in a magical burgery world called McDonaldland, and it’s as weird as …
Ronald McDonald hasn’t been seen in the UK from way before 2016. He was more 80s-90s, and was seen as very dated and tacky by the 2000s. It’s about the same time they had a revamp, got rid of all the gaudy yellow and red plastic, brought in more muted browns and greens, and became a lot healthier. So about 15 years ago.
McDeath has undergone a lot of changes over the years. When I was a kid, they had The Evil Grimace, and Goblins, and the Hamburglar was a skinny woman that resembled Witchiepoo. I never cared much for any of that, I just wanted a Big Mac. They keep changing and rearranging shit every couple years now. I can’t stand those touchscreen kiosks, the only reason they put them in is to eliminate somebody’s job. The only thing I can stomach from McDeath now is the breakfast burrito. Everything else is just nasty to me now, even McDoubles. Too much grease. Id rather buy Steakums from Safeway and cook them at home, where I can drain all the grease before I eat them. Far as Ronald goes, I don’t like clowns. (With the possible exception of ICP)
Tbh i hate the current McDonald’s. as a kid it was magical and fun with the bright happy colors and now with the modern gray boring design it just furthers my depression as an adult realizing how dull and unpleasant the world is from an adult’s perspective and all the things that made me happy as a child are gone so i don’t even get the nostalgia feeling from when i was a kid anymore
