Despite overwhelming scientific evidence, the Flat Earth theory continues to gain traction in some communities. In this short, we …
📹 Flat Earth “Science” — Wrong, but not Stupid
In this video I explain what flat earthers believe, why they believe it, and why I think scientists should take flat earthers more …
That was amazing. Clear, factual, compassionate to those who grew up without a lot of intellectual stimulation. I’ve known a lot of these people, seen them figure out complex problems, but aren’t starting with enough of the building blocks of science to know what to believe and what not to and how to figure that out.
I absolutely loved your conclusion! I like digging into the crazy-sounding quantum physics and sometimes crazier astrophysics (not often crazier). I absorb the theories, enjoy reading about the observations and postulating on what this or that might mean if the scientists are wrong. But I can’t do the math (or at least, I’m not invested enough to learn to do the math). The more abstract math became as I progressed through high school, the less it interested me. If scientists would figure out how to dumb down the methods they use to come to conclusion, I’m betting we could have accomplished so much more (recycling nuclear fuel reactors, much fewer climate change skeptics, the tidal wave of questions about dark matter and energy, vaccine acceptance, why my big toenail curls so much making it difficult to clip). websites like yours are an excellent first step. And I’m glad to see you made convincing arguments without denigrating the believers of flat earth, even though (to me) that’s not what this was about.
The first thing I thought when I heard about flat earth theory was – I don’t know enough about our solar system, to proof one or the other.- Love your approach. To judge and redicule people for believing something different than you, is not going to lead us anywhere. Better to have a conversation and maybe make a new friend😊
For some reason I LOVE perusal flerfs get it wrong. All of their proposed notions are super funny to me and are usually very short sighted and present new unsolved issues for them. And nearly every experiment they run verifies a globe… IDK I just find their confusion to be adorable like when a child is curious and extreme lack of understanding or comprehension leaves them asking awesomely ridiculous questions.
There’s another salient problem with flat earthers, one that most people don’t like to talk about – When we become teenagers, our intellect suddenly improves so very much over how it used to function. For some reason, every time this happens to a person, that person begins to believe that they’re the smartest person on earth. Whatever the reasons are for its happening, the reason we all believed it was because we lacked the knowledge that came with experience. “Knowledge” refers to knowing/ understanding how other people think. Whereas ‘experience’ references the fact that if we spent more time around other people, actually paying attention to what they said and how that related to what they did, we’d have learned long ago that people are deep and their motivations are frequently a mystery. Anyway, the point is, we usually grow out of this phase, of believing that we’re the smartest person in the world, though some people never really seem to. Flat Earthers, on the other hand… Flat Earthers tend to turn up to this party late. VERY, Very, very late. As though they don’t experience this ‘intellect boost’ until they’re in their 20s or 30s. Perhaps even later, for some. Correspondingly, they’re also VERY late in learning the lesson that they’re not as smart as they think they are and that neither are other people as dumb as they believe them to be. For the rest of us, going through this while in high school and having all your friends go through the exact same thing, at the exact same time.
I enjoyed this article. Very well put. It’s very easy to forget the roundness of the world, but I do like to remind myself every now and again in a simple but compelling way: Look up at a clear sky as day turns to night while the moon is in the sky (preferably not a full moon). Take in where the sun is relative to the moon and how its illuminated by it exactly as a sphere would be. Consider the earth as being no different to it in shape and how it should be to view the universe from its surface. Notice how the moon moves mostly with the backdrop of stars and better yet take photos! If you can set up a camera on an interval timer on a tripod then even better. You’ll get to see the paths the stars trace and it only takes a little imagination to see that the paths match what you’d observe if the stars and moon were (relatively) stationary and it were in fact the sphere you were on that was spinning. It’s a beautiful and humbling thing to appreciate.
So according to the flat earth’s scientific theory, if the sun revolves around the surface of our flat earth, how come we see the sun rising from the horizon and setting on the other horizon? According to ancient beliefs, the sun revolved around the flat earth, hiding below earth, not going in circles above us
Some friends and I have pretended to believe in the Flat Earth, and astonished the uninformed, listening to our banter. We had our fun for several years, until some of us died, which put an end to it. I was convinced that we got some people to believe what we were talking about. All of it took place while sitting in the hot water in Harrison Hot Springs.
The easiest way to prove the Earth is round ( IMHO ) is to watch a tall ship receed from your position with binoculars. There is no other explanation for why the lower section of the ship vanashes before the higher sections except the roundness of the Earth. Only problem: You need to be near an ocean or a very large lake.
