John George Butler, born on May 16, 1937, is a British author, YouTuber, and retired farmer living in Derbyshire. He is known for his books about meditation and spirituality gained through international travel and study. Butler has been practicing meditation for over 50 years, from his early years as one of the first organic farmers on the Lincolnshire Fens to his long and fascinating life. In his late 80s, he started collecting notes made throughout his life, of special insights and experiences received, which are published as Wonders of Spiritual Unfoldment.
By the age of 79, at the age of 79, he was recommended to ConsciousTV, a YouTube channel focusing on those who practiced meditation. Though brought up with Christianity, John, 83, follows no specific teaching. He worked as a farmer for most of his life and spent time in various locations around Bakewell.
John Butler has become an unlikely YouTube sensation, with his soothing words and gentle wisdom helping people cope with anxiety during the pandemic. His natural mysticism developed into organic farming and meditation. Later, when life fell apart, it took him through depression and years of wandering. “There is always a choice – to be present or not. ‘To be or not to be.’ The Presence is ever present – everything else comes to pass.
He touched on something that slapped me in the face around 10 years ago. I have always loved solitude; even as a toddler I apparently used to run away from mum and just investigate the park as if she wasn’t there while she watched me. My siblings are 5+ years older than me, so I remember looking out the window perusal them go off to school. It hurt a little bit to be left like that, it probably felt like being abandoned (to my little mind), but I soon learned how to entertain myself which began a lifelong habit of enjoying solitude. What hit me 10 years back when I was almost 40, was that although I was in a bustling community of people, happy, friendly, very social, because there were cliques and a lot of the interactions were somewhat superficial, I felt very, very lonely, lonely in the middle of a bustling socially active crowd. I realized that when I’m on my own, that gnawing sense of loneliness I felt in the crowd is completely absent. To me, being in a group of people but being unable to connect is a fate fare worse than being alone. There’s contentment when I’m alone, but in that other situation there’s pain and confusion.
I can remember when I was about Eight years old at school, if it was raining at play time we had to sit in a big room where all the coats were hung up, all the other kids were loud and full of energy and I just sat there in a state of utter bliss it seemed to come from my stomach and my only thought was, this feeling is great, I was in a total world of my own, It happened on two other occasions round about the same year but it’s never happened since. I would love to experience that state at will now that I am almost 60 !!!
He reminds me of this man i had to knock on the door on because i lost my dog, and this was like a year ago. He was a tall old man in crutches but his voice was the most calmest thing ive ever hear, he had coffee breath but not the bad kind but the caramely kind and litteraly all my anxiety went away. When he talks about isolation in childhood, sadly I know very well indeed what he’s talking about. And when he talked about the presence of God “here and now”, I would have made a stop, instead of telling “ok, let’s go on with your story”. That, was his Story. That moment was magic. This man is so special. I am speechless. It’s going to change my life. Yet it is.
I’ll be honest. I’d love to be a drifter and have no responsibilities to anyone. I guess his fault was that he did have responsibilities to others. I’d love to travel and not do it to run away, but rather to travel for its own sake. To discover. And not to seek some “spiritual” road trip but to just travel and admire the fact that I’m alive! I once experience an ejection of some negative “seed?” a similar story to Johns at the end of this interview 53:33. After which I felt at ease with myself and the world, and come to the realisation that compassion and forgiveness is key, compassion for other beings and most importantly compassion and forgiveness for yourself.

I once worked in a rather small pet zoo which for some reason had three highland cattles. In my first days I was afraid of going into their barn but it turned out for no reason because these animals were the most peaceful ones. After some while they sometimes came to me and just pushed softly their head against my chest leaving it there and it was such a beatuiful and calming experience. So I can really connect with the story of john and his little ram.
People say old people can teach you a lot and they have plenty of stories to tell but they don’t capture my interest like this man. His soothing voice and calm approach to his stories is like listening to your great grandfather in the living room on Christmas day. Snow falling outside, a lit pile of wood in the fireplace. I listened to your conversation for you God comes first and spiritualism. You really motivated me how important God was what powers he has he’s pure he’s a merciful creator. How can God listen to a weak human by spiritual healing or prayers. I know it’s not a wonderful world any more what happened ?? He’s a sweet God we have to feel him and trust his sovereignty.
here’s what I think about, as I watch this article… there’s a very specific person, in reality, like all my “situation-ships” of the past, this person is really nothing to me. in reality, we are really nothing to each other… BUT (HUGE BUT, here…) we both provide each other with the illusion and fantasy of love and friendship, and I hold on, for dear life, to this illusion and fantasy. because I’ve never ever, had true love or a real friend before… and as of recent, this illusion and fantasy is starting to crumble and disintegrate, and I can’t let it. I just can’t. without it, I have nothing. without it, I’d metaphorically and literally die…

But there’s a problem: not being a native speaker I can’t really make out John’s words (33:55) “I went back home and there was my dear wife and…” I hear something like: “… but somewhat I was too sore (or “small” )…” Please, correct me if I am wrong.
It must have taken weeks to get to Peru back then. How did he afford all this? All great being still but every time I sit down my wife, kids or boss wants me to do something. Can’t remember the last time I got a second to look at the sky. Only perusal this now waiting on my son in the dentist. Been texted 3 times already.
The ram came to tell you John that all the herd loves you much and that they will miss you too. When a human being becomes closer to god I.e to love, mercy, kindness,etc., and he directs these feelings towards all, every thing becomes in return more loving towards him, also: closer, more attached, and more obedient- except for evil spirits and some humans; and man will appreciate the opposition of these two one day because he would understand that their opposition helped him rise.
His awareness of polarity…. This is the vivid realization that states, things, and events that we ordinarily call opposite… are interdependent, like back and front, or the poles of a magnet. By polar awareness one sees that things which are explicitly different are implicitly one. Self and other, subject or object, left and right, male and female- and then, a little more suprisingly, solid and space, figure and background, pulse and interval, saints and sinners, police and criminals. In groups and out groups. Each is definable only in terms of the other, and they go together transactionally, like buying and selling, for there is no sale without a purchase, and no purchase without a sale. As this awareness becomes increasingly intense, you feel that you yourself are polarized with the external universe in such a way that you imply each other. Your push is it’s pull. As when you move the steering wheel of a car. Are you pushing it or pulling it?
I don’t like the interviewer much, he cuts John a lot, like he doesn’t allow his interviewee to wander too far from what he is asking and I feel it really cuts off a lot of the idea of interviewing a man with so much knowledge to share, like in 16:05 when John is trying to say things about the present and how the church bell chime is just there present in that moment and using it as an example of stillness and the interviewer is like “…yeeaa right can you go back to answer my questions?”. I felt the interviewer was a little rude in that regard or maybe he was just being sincere about not understanding what John refers to “stillness”.
I hope he writes another hundred of his books and takes ß-blockers to ward off cardio-vascular problems. By the way, the interviewer often seems not to know whether or is not sure when machine gun Jack has finished speaking. I liked the bit about putting one’s arms around a tree. So is this guy saying he left his wife and child for this woman that he spiritually melded with? It seems he is eluding to this being the case but attempts to justify his actions. Perhaps this was not the case but its quite obvious that he connected with this woman in a way that he had never connected with anyone else. In my experience when a man connects with a woman in that way…..he has fallen in love with her…..which one cannot help but wonder if that is not what happened to him. I strongly have to disagree with his justifications no matter how you look at it. He felt he was far beyond his simplistic and beautiful family life. It seems incredibly irresponsible and self centered. Not exactly loving and peaceful.
The story of a man who spent his entire life never taking ownership over his actions and running from his responsibilities. He was bullied in grade school, fled to Peru to chase a piece of ass, got kicked out of peru for being a drunkard, got married, cheated on his wife, abandoned his family, got left by his new girl, became a bum, got shipped to a South African colony for a job by state ultimatum as punishment, got fired again and became a bum again this time in Africa, went home, refused to be serious about getting a job, ran to the US with a bunch of hippies floating job to job, studied Russian, and eventually ‘found’ Jesus in order to forgive him self for his terrible life decisions and all the people he hurt. He spends almost 2 hours telling us his life story consisting of mental gymnastics, cognitive dissonance, and ‘mystical’ justifications of an entire life’s worth of selfish decisions. That said, 10/10 asmr but he’s a crackpot.
So many plans I made.. and then I met a woman. Who knows how much better off I’d be if I were a virgin. Just told em all to buzz off and focus on myself. So much easier said than done. I’m 44 now and I’ve been driving a truck for going on a year now. I never knew what to do either. Boy that question always haunted me as well. And with the covid shenanigans going on.. everything closing down. Nothing going on. I just decided to get my cdls and hit the road. So 8 drive all day everyday now. Making decent money. Left alone with my thoughts. All day all night I’m alone with my thoughts. Kind of reminds me of being in jail quite frankly. I suppose the difference is I can quit and go home if I choose.. I get paid for being here. But I relive my life in my head over n over. Just driving down the road. I watch movies or listen to them..I’ve seen em all a trillion times. I listen to pandora, youtube. I’m laying in the back of the truck now in the middle of nowhere in some big truck stop parking lot. I dont have much of a life last 10 years anyway. Might as well drive. Do this for a while. Make a chapter or 2 of it in my life. Get some money up. I cant really live without money. That’s my goal to travel around without financial restrictions. When time and money is no longer a problem I know my truck driving days are over. Then I can be free. That’s my dream. To be free from money and time. Sleep in hotels… Wonder around. Who knows how the world will be by time I’m ready.. But I will build a house on the land I have in the country.
The purpose of christian meditation John is to raise your Heart and Mind to God in order to enter into an intimate union of Love with him. Every Christian man,woman and Child is obligated in the virtue of Religion and Justice to do this whether in a monastery or a family home if they want to be obedient to God’s divine ordained Will for their life.
John then went to Africa in 1988 to do a job. From John himself, his last CV and job application had requested a job in which he would set people free by loving them. Lo❤️ that! Apart from Jiddu Krishnamurti who has confessed to more than anything else; to want to set man free after his big project “The challenge of change” which you can watch on youtube, now departed, may the wholeness of what is, continue to find man and reduce him the humbleness that both him and John B seem to want for man continue. Its rare to find men that are commited to the challenges of man not to necessariry solve them as any attempt derived from human thoughts seem to brings forth a more challenging outcome but at least to invite us all to trend carefulluly and especially when it comes to our psyche. Like John has reminded us in one of the articles some psyche decided that what was best for Jesus was to kill him publicly for the reason that does not seem to make sense as things got worse. Was the reasoning behind killing him derived from the thoughts that these two men and am sure a few others continnue warn us about. Are we all to concentrated in what we call it and not a chance to listen the other side of the story. What job I wonder did john try to do in SA and did it not fit the job description? Look at Jiddu Krishnamurti on the job he’d been assigned and see why he took route 11 and walked away. I warn you, he does not see meditation practices the same way as John but he definately has something for us all.
I wish I could bottle John up and take his wisdom everywhere. He’s right, when he mentioned all of our endeavors, all of our worries, activities and aspirations eventually end up as water under the bridge. And what are we left with? All we have, all we were ever meant to be, is to be present, in this moment. Feeling the presence of God and being at peace.
John, I’m sorry to ask but an inspirational person that I admired very much died recently and now that he’s gone I realize there will never be another moment with him again. I can’t sustain it, but it’s electric! What is that?? Is it’s just deep relaxation in the moment or? It comes in waves only if i think towards it…
John makes a very good point about the underlying fabric of reality; the substrate upon which everything of the matter of our lives is constructed. There are also parallels to be drawn with quantum theory and the illusionistic nature of reality in religions like Buddhism. He also puts the concept of Salvation into the best context I have heard it placed or described. That is, not as the church preaches it, placing us in unworthiness and in need of mercy and rescue but simply that being saved equates with an abiding focus on the silent presence of God above and beyond the affairs of man. The stages of ‘growing up’ mentioned near the end of this talk also bring hope and reassurance to the aging process.
I showered in a waterfall of tears that were not mine with a hand that grabbed my heart. Gods love poured down on me from a hole in heaven. Totally numb trapped in ego and flesh. Have I become my own god, a machine of other people’s thoughts that no one thinks. Through self detest, radio and music speak to me like a ghost of euphoria and it feels more real than grass and soil. Fully aware it’s just my brain turned upside down, I talk to the dead, while falling deeper and deeper into the claws of madness. I fell beneath a carpet of death, which was my soul. Behind there hid gold of real life. But. The day you fight for your soul, there is no doubt. I lost the fight to my humongous ego. After becoming ashes, then born from fire and ice, my body is now like a car without a motor. I’m not crying anymore. Im no longer a hurt child. I have become a shell of a man. High on weed, a few years ago I cried my eyes out when I got a taste of this silence. No more pain. Yet still alive. Spiritually dead, I walk in silence. Sighing longingly at each individual who shows signs of life. God bless. In God’s cleansing. The devil himself dancing in a disco of psychosis. From an idea of self pity and searching, I still sleep in a seed of hope. There’s still spirit hidden away, to one day escape the flesh. And the figure that gently sat down beside me in bed was indeed an angel.
Worked in a medical office through the pandemic. We were a respiratory clinic at the beginning & vax clinic as well because it was a large family practice. Big office. Very stressful. All my hard work, raises and promotions went down the drain because of the mandates. I only made it through the pandemic then losing my career because I kept my feet on the ground. Thank you Mr. Butler!
John isn’t wise. He looks and sounds like he is, but he isn’t. I read the comments here, and just about everyone takes this lovable old man as a guru, but he isn’t. The sound of his voice and his general vibe is so peaceful, it’s lovely to watch on YouTube. I’ve watched many, many hours of his content, I’m a fan, but I would ask anyone to listen to the content and realise it isn’t ‘a life’s worth of wisdom’, it’s vague nonsense. That doesn’t diminish that he is totally loveable and a great fella. I would argue that most of you reading and commenting have a more rounded and realistic view of life than John has. And you are wiser than he is, and could teach him.
Very pleasant article as always ..however the sense of slowing time deep in meditation and and becoming aware of your surroundings is the same for an atheist such as myself ie the experience does certainty not need phoney embellishment of this being called spiritual or a proof of a God…its a deep human experience nothing more
To be or not to be. Hamlet had cognitive dissonance and couldn’t be present, whether to avenge his father’s murder or not. Brings into question religion and the scripture that says, vengeance is mine says the Lord. Which brings about the question of forgiveness whether it will set us free and leave it in God’s hands. 🤍
Philosophy time….’this presence is a NOthing you can’t describe it.’ Well if it’s a NOthing then it’s a zero, it dosen’t exist.Agreed then….you can’t describe what dosen’t exist.Even the word it becomes a falsehood because, by implication,there can be no it to describe.But,one could ask, what has nothing(that which dosen’t exist) to offer by way of succour to any feeling of lack.None as far as I can see.However if this NOthing is in fact a realm of quantum energies not normally perceived because of sensory or imaginary distractions then yes,there may be something compensatory that can be expirenced.Jolly well hope so.But that being the case this NOthing has to be more than its name
