Lenox Memorial Middle and High School in Massachusetts has decided to keep the long-time nickname and mascot, “The Millionaires”, which dates back to the 1930s. The school’s student council announced that a school-wide poll found a majority of students want to keep the nickname. The “Millionaires” mascot was chosen because it referred to wealthy visitors who owned second homes in the area. The school is located in Lenox, Massachusetts, United States, founded in 1803. The concern over the nickname, dating back to the 1930s, was voiced at last week’s School Committee meeting by Francie Sorrentino, a former long-time student at the school.
Approximately two-thirds of those who responded said they no longer want to be known as the Millionaires, according to Lenox Public Schools Superintendent Timothy Lee. Superintendent Lee had urged the student council to examine the history of the “Millionaires” mascot and consulted with the school’s faculty and staff. The nickname is a tribute to wealthy out-of-towners, called “cottagers”, who built mansions during the gilded age and employed the locals. About 96% of the school’s 438 students voted last month, with 51% voting to keep the nickname and 32% wanting to change it.
In conclusion, Lenox Memorial High School in Massachusetts is considering keeping the “Millionaires” mascot, which dates back to the 1930s, as a tribute to the wealthy out-of-towners who built mansions during the gilded age and employed locals.

📹 Millionaire – Documentary 2017
Lenox High School is involved in a rather unique debate over their school mascot – the Millionaire. This film features arguments …
I don’t know how many people in Lenox remember this….but back in the ’70s the Massachusetts government wanted to make Shadowbrook (the Kripalu Ceter) a prison. The late Dennis J. Duffin, for whom a scholarship and your Auditorium is named after, fought and won to keep it out of Lenox. If the plans actually went through, would the nickname of LMMHS be the “Inmates”? I highly doubt it…..however….. the town and a lot of the people that reside there are not Millionaires… but the town is vastly wealthy in the arts, music, dance and yes…the past. If it wasn’t for those weather people that blew into town, built their cottages and left….would we have been known as the LMMHS “Fine Arts”? Pretty poor example, but I hope you know where this is going. The name is who we were, are, and hopefully, will stay…. for if we change the future, we abandon the past…….
