Magic mushroom tinctures are a simple and effective way to extract beneficial compounds from medicinal mushrooms for health purposes. To make a tincture, you need dried and powdered magic mushrooms, high-proof alcohol, and equipment like glass jars and strainers. The first step is to extract active compounds from the mushrooms using a double-extraction process that captures both water and the mushrooms.
Mushroom tinctures can be made from fresh or dried medicinal mushrooms and offer health benefits such as supporting well-being, stimulating cognitive function, and promoting energy. To create a double-extraction tincture, wash, chop, and dry the mushroom fruiting bodies after harvesting them. Some specific mushrooms like Reishi, Cordycep, Lion’s Mane, Turkey Tail, and Chaga can help support immune health and can be enjoyed in various ways.
A double-extraction tincture can be made with 50g of mushrooms, 300ml of alcohol, and 900ml of H20. These tinctures are typically crafted with an alcohol extract, but they also capture compounds from the mushroom material, such as Cordyceps. The active hallucinogen of magic mushrooms, psilocin, is being repurposed to treat nicotine addiction and treatment-resistant depression.
In this video, we break down the process of making dual extracted tinctures and offer alternative ways to do so. By using these methods, you can create a concentrated liquid extract that offers numerous health benefits.

Hey brother just found your website which has been amazing and so syncronistic as I have recently been called to work more deeply with the beautiful and sacred Fungi kingdom, I was just wanting to learn how to do a double extraction and you have demystified it perfectly 👍❤️🙏 love your content and your vibe, would love to hear more about the effects on the body consciousness matrix of using these immunomodulatory fungi as it’s clear your connected to them and nature in a profound way 🙏❤️ much peace love and gratitude for everything you do
Good content. Would you then cut back on the amount of turkey tail used in a turkey tail tincture also or would you increase the amount of alcohol because of the greater volume of turkey tail? Is the 1 to 5 ratio the minimum amount of alcohol to extract the greatest amount of active ingredients of each type of mushroom? I am all about using the least amount of alcohol to get the best result, because alcohol is expensive and I don’t drink alcohol other than an occasional shot of tincture which is rarely at all.
Have you ever tried ultrasound to speed up extractions. I have tried it on aging and infusing alchol using california white oak and with cinnamon bark. It would probably cut your 2 weeks down to 2 hours. Oh I also used it on a stinging nettle tincture. A 4 hour ultrasound seemed stronger than a two weeks tincture. There is also a possible benefit that it might be making nano particles for an easier uptake and bioavailability like it does for liposomal vitamin C. So a win win in my book. You do need to keep an eye on temperature. If you are in oregon washington area I would not mind bringing my equipment to see what you might think. I know it impressed me. Hope to hear back from you.
Wow, that’s a lot of mushrooms. I like to make it separately. I make the tea when I want to drink it (I’ve filmed how I make my tea too), and then I add the tincture (the tincture can be store for a long time). I prefer this way because it’s less liquid that we have to store. In nature I only use to find three of them: Ganoderma lucidum, Trametes versicolor and Ganoderma applanatum. I think it won’t be easy for everyone to find all of those 5 species, even by buying them… but as you said the tincture can be done with only one species. Nice share. Congratulations for your 150k my friend.
Im confused, I’ve heard mushrooms and all fungi are structurally composed of chitin while plants are structurally composed of cellulose. Cellulose can break down in alcohol while chitin has a natural resistance to it meaning alcohol tinctures aren’t all they’re cracked up to be but I could be mistaken. I’m new to all of this and for now will just stick to boiling in water as a tea or coffee.
Hi herbal jedi I recently found your website and love what you do. I have started collecting slicing and drying my collection of birch, tinder hoof, mustard, humpback ridge, turkey tails, artist conk and dhialdalis! I am making my first tincture for my wife who has had uterus cancer and now skin cancer..I am making a blend of them and know the artist conk, humpback and birch are particularly anti cancer properties! Can you recommend the best concoction to be most effective please as I am a dedicated amateur who has been hunting morning to night 12 hours a day since finding this amazing information and have several kilos of dried mushrooms. Also found my first hen of the woods and lions manes plus many others..am seriously addicted to this hobby and would say am obsessed to the highest level! Rewarding beyond belief and highly addictive. Harvest nearly a kilo of turkey tails in Bulgaria today! Can I freeze my remains or do I need to dry them like all my others? Would massively appreciate any advice from anyone who has knowledge like yourself! Thank you kindly and hope you have time to answer Chris
I’ve read that some of the active ingredients from water extraction are degraded above 23% abv, so best stability is between 20% and 23% (Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation by Tradd Cotter). It may be different for different mushrooms I theorize. I aim for 21.5% w/ my mushroom double extractions. But I’ve seen product w/ everywhere from 20-50% alcohol. Also I don’t understand the need for diluting to 75% beforehand unless it’s just to symplify the math…? Miatake and lion’s mane are also good candidates for double extraction.
Are you able to use a pressure cooker to create the decoction? So something like 2000ml of water pressured in an instant pot for a couple of hours. Then put it on sauté until the liquid gets to the 1500 mark. This would be a lot easier and not involving gas stoves etc. So the process would be something like: 1. Get 750ml of 75% alcohol in a mason jar and put in 150g of mushrooms. You can use 150 proof vodka. 2. Shake for 2 weeks. 3. After 2 weeks, pressure cook 300g of mushrooms in 2000ml of water fo 2 hours. 4. Let it cool and self release. 5. Simmer and stir using the saute function until the liquid is 1500ml. Shouldn’t take long to reduce it to 1500ml. 6. Replace the lid and let it cool down for a while until warm. 7. Add the alcohol mix and use a sealed silicone lid. Shake every now and then for 2 days. 8. Strain and bottle. No stoves, no gas, no risk of setting fire to the alcohol, and most of it is temperature controlled with the instant pot so no worries. Set and forget.
Love the article. Thank You so much for sharing your knowledge. I’d love to know how to identify all this stuff so I could make my own. That would be so gratifying. Unfortunately right now can’t walk in the woods due to a seriously messed up back. Have seen a few surgeons that are afraid to touch me. Just found a new one and seen him last week. He ordered 2 MRIs and 2 Cats. I see him tomorrow to see if he can finally help me. I’m extremely nervous. He did mention (depending on the pics he’ll get) even without seeing them that it would be a very hard and serious surgery. And recovery would take awhile. He said I will need help when I get out of the hospital, but I have no one at all to help me so I can’t let him know that. But I’m very determined and bullheaded, so I’ll be fine. If he will do the surgery. So I’ve got to have faith that he’ll give me a life again. Being out of nature has been killing me… If you happen to read this wish me luck, please.
How do you know the temperature has not destroyed or changed the molecular make up of the “mushroom goodness” during this process? Certain temps change or decarb, or destroy. Examples: THC and temps or Pscilocybin and temps. Any science papers out there regarding this information for these medicinal mushrooms?
I’m just getting into tinctures I’ve got a question. I’m making my tinctures from either 100 proof vodka or 190 proof everclear. Any reason why you don’t extract with those proofs. Drain and filter your material, add that to pure water and allow that to extract. Then mix those 2 liquids into a concoction with a lower alcohol content ?
Are the tinctures bioavailable at that temperature? Chitin is broken down at 340 degrees Celsius. I think in the hot water extraction tanks, they are 180 degrees Celsius – they sit for 8 hours at this temperature though. I’m wondering if my extract will be just as bioavailable when done on a lower temperature. Or if completing it at a higher temperature will be better? I forgot to ask to, what temperature was the hot water extract done at?
Thank you, Yarrow. First i just really need to establish whether you are referring to the % as per ‘Proof’, or as per ABV, please.. It seems to change depending on who i’m talking to or watcning.. 🙂 I’ve made a dual extraction tinture with dried Reishi last year, and I like it.. Mine was a great deep colour but I think evaporating off more water next time will be even better. This is time I’m going to make a combined fungi tincture rather than a simple, so will research more carefully the various attributes and etc.. I was wondering about the energetics of Ganoderma applantum, because that one I’m certain I have growing in my gully.. It certainly grows and looks like Artist’s Conk, and does the dark brown scratch thing but I’ll check before using it.. We don’t have the Asian Reishi here, although people say that Turkey’s Tails and Lion’s Mane grows nearby (subtropical rainforest here but in cooler temperate micrclimates amongst that.. ). There is not so much written over here about Artist’s Conk medicinally, so I was wondering if it has similar psyche/spirit grounding/soothing properties to the Reishi lucidum? Thank you so much for all that you do, Yarrow. ❤️🙏❤️
thank you for this detailed article. i’m excited to refine my process using your teachings. i’m wondering- do you prefer the freezer method over doing the tincturing first? seems freezer is better because it uses/wastes less mushrooms. i had been doing my alcohol extract and then using the same mushrooms for the water extract and use 190 proof alcohol
asking advice here. I want to make a dual extraction, but wonder if I should combine 9 at once for the same tincture. I plan on grinding all, infusing into everclear, then after straining, I will proceed with the water extraction. I have Chaga, Turkey tail, Tremella, Red Lingshi, Red Reishi Dried Sliced Ganoderma Lucidum, Lions Mane, Shiitake, Maitake, Fangjia Cordyceps Militaris. I would assume I should add equal amounts of each?…BTW, I have learned quite a bit from your informative posts.
I like the precision of your method. Any concern with adding the tincture into the decoction when it is still hot? I don’t know at what temperature those heat-instable compounds will denature. Also, what do you think about freezing the mushrooms before making the decoction to break the cell membranes

I just followed this exactly as shown and there doesn’t seem to be enough alcohol to cover the amount of mushrooms at that ratio. Ran it through a blender to knock down the size of my mushrooms and they just sucked up the alcohol and it seems like there is no alcohol left…… Something isn’t right.
To work out the alcohol bit: Assume example where we had say 95% alcohol ======================================= So, 750ml is 95% alcohol Therefore 1% alcohol = 750ml/95 = 7.8947ml We want 75% alcohol solution – so 75 * 7.8947ml = 592.105ml to fill with the alcohol. The rest is filled with water to the 750 mark. Assume example where we had say 85% alcohol ======================================= If you had say 85% alcohol 1% alcohol = 750ml/85 = 8.8235ml We want 75% alcohol solution – so 75 * 8.8235ml =661.76ml to fill with the alcohol. The rest is filled with water to the 750 mark. Assume example where we had say 75% alcohol – used here as a sanity check to make sure it makes sense. ======================================= If you had say 75% alcohol (the exact solution of alcohol content required) 1% alcohol = 750ml/75 =10ml We want 75% alcohol solution – so 75 * 10ml =750ml to fill with the alcohol. No water required. This should be obvious that no water is required because it’s at exactly the correct % of alcohol we require. So it all adds up correctly. Use this to calculate the ml of alcohol for any alcohol ABV. Note: Proof is double the ABV. So 150 proof alcohol is 75% ABV.
I already make Usnea Tincture and that stuff is an amazing Natural anti-viral, anti- infective solution combined with my Colloidal silver I call them the dynamic duo. We are just getting into the Turkey Tail and Mushroom tinctures. WE have 44 acres full of so many medicinal mushrooms so I am game on. We do have Chaga sorry you do not. I know that the alcohol and heat extraction is the one way that does the best medicinal extraction. I was told that the alcohol soak needs to be 2-4 weeks. In Usnea it is 8 weeks. So I am leaning towards alcohol soak first then strain and now take your very clean water Our well is Mountain Spring tested quality about 70 TDS on a meter. No iron or arsenic nothing but pure goodness. Ingredients are important especially the water. For a 1 quart jar I would then boil 1-2 cups of water and now put the Turkey Tail in that stir for a bit and turn off the heat and leave it steep until room temperature. Strain again and combine the liquids Wa La Tincture made. I then want to take the strained remains and put them on a tray in a dehydrator. Then crush them into powders to make Chocolate powder mushroom mix and capturing all of the medicinal value of the Turkey Tail. Have you ever heard of anyone doing this? What are your thoughts on my potential process?
This is off-topic I’m hoping someone on here can answer my question. Concerning the medicinal mushrooms like lions mane, if it were dehydrated, that’s not the same as fresh or raw correct but it’s neither cooked either correct? My question is, to unlock the full potential they must be fully cooked or extracted? Thanks 🙏
I took a short 2 hour mycology class where the teacher said alcohol extraction is the best way to extract the medicinal compounds out of mushooms because the chitin isn’t broken down through any other way. So my question is: why do the decoction if water is unable to break down the chitin to get to the medicinal compounds? Does heat break chitin down?
Hello thankyou so much for this article 🙂 i have been told that the mushroom cell walls are too thick and undigestible for us humans so it has to be cooked to break down and release al the nutrients for us able to consume making it easier for the liver.. PLEASE does this process the alcohol infustion cooking? im so confused same as powder form has this been cooked or just dehydrated and then made into powder form// HELP
I ran into some problems with the tincture part. I had 75 g of reishi and 325 ml of 95% alcohol but it didn’t come close to covering the mushrooms. Ended up having to add alcohol until I had a total of 600ml. So now my tincture is a1:8. So with the decoction do I have to double the original 325 ml or the 600 ml abs if the 600 ml does that mean I have to increase the mushrooms as well?
I find that making a triple extraction is even better: 1) alcohol extraction 2) cold water extraction and 3) hot water (boiling reduction) extraction. I start with the alcohol extraction, which will extract out the terpenoids. At the same time, I set up the cold water extraction. Once this part is done, I use the same mushrooms from both batches for the rest of the process. My cold water extraction sits in a dark closet for 10 days, I shake it up every day. Same goes for the alcohol extraction. Then I filter the water off in a cheese cloth, and put the mushroom mass together with the ones filtered from the alcohol tincture. Those two parts of the mushroom mass will then be hot water extracted. The reason why I do this is because different components need to be cold extracted, as certain physicochemical and phytochemical properties would be diminished or decimated by heat. The final extraction gets all the polysaccharides which do not mind being boiled. I chop up all my dried mushrooms in an electric chopper. This only works if I reduce the size of the chunks quite a bit, as they will otherwise just get caught in the blades. Dried mushrooms can be somewhat leathery and soft, so the blades would basically chop into them and then just swirl them around. Smaller pieces won’t do that. I end up having almost half of the shrooms in powder form. Needless to say that the water and the alcohol get down to every little particle that way. Once my hot water extraction has cooled down and has been filtered, I mix the three together 1/3 – 1/3 – 1/3.
I think I have found some chaga well it sure looks like it anyway. I haven’t harvested it because I’m not sure if it is in fact chaga, I say that because of the tree that it is growing on, it looks like a berch tree at first glance but there is no peeling of the bark at all on it. If I Emailed you a pitcher would you identify it for me?🙂
