Methods For Dispelling A Conspiracy?

A new review has found that only some methods to counteract conspiracy beliefs are effective. To counteract these beliefs, one can approach someone spreading conspiracy theories by asking them about the facts, personalizing the subject to invoke emotion, and considering alternatives.

One effective strategy is to seek out evidence, as real conspiracies have been confirmed due to there being evidence. For example, in the 1990s allegations that tobacco companies knew about the pandemic, evidence was present. Experts and r/ChangeMyView subreddit moderators offer 10 tips to debunk conspiracy theories convincingly and kindly.

To approach someone spreading conspiracy theories, one should acknowledge the scale of the task and recognize the difficulty of talking to people who endorse conspiracy theories. Their logic is self-sealing, designed to be impermeable to external reasoning. This is especially true for conspiracy theories related to science.

New technologies, social media, and smartphone applications allow for modifying facts and news and spreading misinformation. As the pandemic has taken a grip, so have the misinformation spreaders. Five ways to spot holes in their logic include:

  1. Asking questions about the person’s belief in the conspiracy theory.
  2. Personalizing the subject to invoke emotion.
  3. Consider alternatives and posing counterfactuals.

In conclusion, understanding conspiracy theories and how to approach them can help individuals avoid the spread of misinformation and maintain their faith.

  • I like this. Its short and Chris gives an example which instantly makes you realise the point straight away. What else could it mean? is a way of stopping yourself from imagining why something is happening and fastening onto just one explanation. It gives you a pause to let other possibilities in, which would mean that you wouldn’t get so wound up when faced with an annoying situation. Helpful I thought!

  • Saying ‘What does this mean’ gives you a moment to catch yourself & to breath before anger or another emotion takes over. The emotion will dissipate if you look inside yourself for the answer to that question. Everything in reality arises from the self, awareness. Be a Seer 👀 of truth & knowledge. We take the external as truth from a ego view that is an illusion. If we want to be in the presence of Divinity open the gift, the Present & live mainly there. If we live in the Present the illusion will fall away & you will be in the presence of God.

  • of course this doesn’t work with people who have no ability for empathy. my landlord is threatening to drive up my rent because my girlfriend took a shower at my place. he said he was tired of her coming over, and he was just going to raise my rent in anticipation of higher utilities that are supposedly included. I tried to explain the situation, and he flat out told me he doesn’t care nor does he have time to care about anybody but himself. he excused himself about 20 times over for being an asshole, and I had to close the door on him to keep from bashing his face in with a baseball bat.

  • Sounds great but is he saying more to use as a thought process for ourselves dealing with difficult, emotionally charged or irrational pple OR to say it to them? Because ive recently been dealing with an illogical communuicator who also dsnt like my more educated way of speaking (yeh forgive me for liking words & knowing the meanings-🙃) AND this person lashes out when a qurstion is asked for topic clarification & accuses me of assuming something else or that im doubting them. I speak this way with everyone even strangers so i dont get what the issue is. Its family & i love this person & its disheartening and defeating when simple talks go south so fast & then trying to straighten it out I get accused of “arguing” or wanting to escalate it. Help!!
