The Verdant Spell metamagic feat allows mind-affecting spells to affect any plant, even mindless ones. Mind-affecting spells work only against creatures with an Intelligence score of 1 or higher. Thid means that any creature with no intelligence, mindless, is naturally mindless. When combined with an ioun stone, they grant additional powers. A clear spindle ioun stone protects the user from possession and mind control as a permanent protection.
Metamagic and bloodlines are the main ways to get around specific cases. Undead Bloodline, Serpentine Bloodline, and Impossible bloodlines all get you past certain types. There is a level 1 cleric spell that protects against mind-affecting spells. Animate skeletons (level 3 cleric, 4 wizard/sorcerer) are pretty good. Mind Blank grants a +8 resistance bonus on saving throws against all mind-affecting spells and effects.
Mindless creatures and undead are immune to mind-affecting effects. Spells like bestow curse and mind fog can be used to make spells harder to resist without forcing a save. However, most late game enemies have the “unholy aura” effect, which gives immunity to mind-affecting spells. Unbreakable Heart is the first level cleric spell that suppresses most bad stuff if hit.
To protect a low-will-save character from mind-affecting spells, players can either reload or try their own dominate/dispel magic. Mind-affecting spells serve to muddle or confuse targets rather than directly damaging them. Lesser geas and ability penalties can be ended by break enchantment, limited wish, remove curse, miracle, or wish.
