What is a Black Mage?
Black magic, an occult art, was once feared and respected by mages who learned to wield it. However, this power corrupted mortal judgment, leading them to unknowingly embark on a path of ruin. Black mages become agents of devastation, capable of annihilating opponents through their will. They enhance the Thaumaturge’s offensive magic abilities by delving on unaspected spells. Black mages have no party utility and bring massive damage. Mastering a Black Mage requires memorizing enemies’ attack patterns, as they are rooted to the spot while casting spells, with little time for movement.
Can Thaumaturgy open a gate?
This spell enables the user to open or close an unlocked door or window with immediate effect, alter their eye appearance for a period of one minute, and to have up to three effects active simultaneously. Furthermore, these effects may be dismissed as an action.
What is the thaumaturgy spell?
Thaumaturgy is a basic cantrip for Clerics or Tieflings that can have various effects, but most of them are easily dismissable. The spell can amplify the caster’s voice, change the brightness or color of surrounding flames, create tremors in the ground, cause various sounds, open unlocked doors and windows, or alter the appearance of the caster’s eyes. However, the first effect, which causes the caster’s voice to boom three times louder for its duration, is useful for communication even when parties are far away.
This megaphone can be invaluable for gaining attention or searching for lost individuals in dark dungeons. The brightness of surrounding torches is a critical strategic component in certain environments, and the spell does not need to target a single flame, affecting all flames within 30 ft.

Do tieflings get thaumaturgy?
Tieflings, also known as devilkin or infernals, are humanoids with devilish ancestry and are distinguished by their large horns on their heads. They are known for their extravagant appearance and carefree attitude. Their diabolic origins result in an array of fiendish features, such as horns, tails, hooves, fangs, and wings. However, their appearance and ancestry do not necessarily mean they are evil themselves. They have a wide array of skin tones, most commonly deep crimson, purple, blue, green, and even yellow and pink.
Tieflings are believed to have been created in Issylra during the Age of Arcanum by a cabal of warlocks seeking more otherworldly power. Their children were marked with the fiendish influence of their masters. An alternative theory suggests that the first tieflings were created in the city of Ghor Dranas in Wildemount, as the inhabitants tying their bloodlines to Asmodeus in exchange for magical knowledge. There might be some truth in their origin myth in the city of the Betrayer Gods, as nowadays tieflings from Rosohna tend to share the Father of Lies’ red skin.

Can thaumaturges use wands?
A thaumaturge is a magical tool that gathers and stores magical energy (vis) for various purposes. Their career typically begins with an iron-capped wooden wand, which can be crafted on the vanilla crafting table without magical tools. However, this wand is inefficient and can damage nodes dependent on vis. Players should replace their wand with a gold-capped greatwood wand at the first opportunity, and master the “Node Preserver” ability to back up their tools’ potential.
More advanced thaumaturges combine silverwood or elemental materials with mystical thaumium or void metal caps, and use scepters and staves for greater vis storage. Each wand is crafted from a wand core and two metallic wand caps, assembled on an arcane workbench. They can also be equipped with interchangable wand foci for additional abilities.

Who are the famous thaumaturges?
The term thaumaturgy, which means “wonderworker” in Greek, refers to several Christian saints and was often translated into English as “wonderworker”. Early Christian thaumaturges include Gregory Thaumaturgus, Saint Menas of Egypt, Saint Nicholas, and Philomena. During the medieval period, thaumaturgy evolved within the context of Christian mysticism and early scientific thought, with saints and holy men often credited with thaumaturgic powers. Notable medieval Christian thaumaturges include Anthony of Padua and bishop Andrew Corsini of the Carmelites.
The concept of thaumaturgy expanded in the Renaissance as scholars like John Dee explored the intersections between magic, science, and religion. Dee’s Mathematical Praeface to Elements of Geometrie of Euclid of Megara is one of the earliest English texts to discuss thaumaturgy, describing it as the art of creating “strange works” through a combination of natural and mathematical principles.
Dee’s work reflects the Renaissance pursuit of knowledge that blurred the lines between the magical and the mechanical, as thaumaturges were often seen as early scientists harnessing the hidden powers of nature.

📹 Thaumaturge/Black Mage Starter Guide for Level 1-50: New to the Job? Start Here! (FFXIV 6.45+)
I explain all of the important aspects about Thaumaturge and Black Mage to get started, specifically covering the first fifty levels …
Just saw another article about this one. I got the same feeling from your review as the other one… way way way too much customization up front for my taste. I like character complexity but I like it to grow with my character’s experience, depending on the team comp and the DM’s particular world. There’s so much set-up at first blush that will either be hard to adapt to the campaign over time or, at best, involve a ton of retraining breaking roleplay and immersion. Feels kind of like trying to drop a Pathfinder 2E early-overly-customized character build into D&D5E and… if I wanted that, I’d just play P2E. If there was a way to make this character a LOT simpler in early levels and have the flood of options (spell school selections, spell selections, weird overcasting mechanics) slowly kick in, I think the core idea is really fun! But as fun as it is to make a SUPER granular SUPER customized character in the white room of theory, to do all that so early in a character’s development seems detrimental to using it in a long campaign. At least for me.
