The Death Rite Bird in Consecrated Snowfield is a challenging boss in Elden Ring. To defeat it, one must position their character outside its area of influence. The bird appears near the end of the frozen river and can be summoned by running along the frozen river. However, it cannot reset its fall timers like the enemy can.
To reach the Death Rite Bird northwest of Ordina, Liturgical Town, collect the Left and Right sides of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. From Liurnia of the Lakes to Consecrated Snowfields, Death Rite Birds are challenging bosses in Elden Ring. To defeat them, travel southeast from the Apostate Derelict Site of Grace to the head of the frozen river.
The only bareable way to beat the bird is by going close quarters melee, hugging its body, using ranged attacks and spells while on horseback, or rushing in, avoiding the bird’s spear and beak attacks. Bait the bird to go to the top, jump down the cliff, wait for the bird to do his drive-by sweep, and then jump off so you land between its legs.
Using the envoy’s weapon art to inject holy bubbles directly into the bird can help. However, Death Rite Birds can cause many deaths before being killed due to their AoE black flame.

For anyone trying this now: the spot here I couldn’t reach him with anything. Instead I moved a little further down and just shot him with rot bolts. It works but takes a long time. He can still reach you with flame and his explosiony attack, but you should be able to dodge. If he manages to get up onto your ledge, just summon Torrent and ride back down to his starting position. If you’re lucky, he will wander further back up the cliff, fall and die from the fall damage.
Doesn’t seem to work anymore. Dragon breath can’t hit it from there anymore, and he flies up on the cliff sometimes and takes very small fall damage if he jumps off the peak. Also most of his fire attacks can hit up the cliff. The best luck I’ve had are the times he has gone too far from his arena and starts backing away, so I’ll probably just try that. Edit: yeah its much easier to just shoot him from the riverbed than from the top now. I had to use my bow, probably some high level spell like Comet Azur would be better but I’m mostly melee.
I tried going up the cliffs and the dude followed me up (i took the flat way around, didnt jump up). So i ran back down and he stayed up there and stopped being active. Got closer to entice him to come down and attack me (hey look fresh tarnished meat!) and dude jumped down and insta-died from fall damage, despite being a bird. Lol
I felt guilty about cheesing this bird at the last minute and decided to at least take it head on and see. Used Golden Vow and Order’s Blade (Holy Damage) on my Bloodhound Fang +10 and did the skill 4-5 times with most of them connecting and down went the bird. 🤷🏾♂️ Please try this and if it still doesn’t work, then go for the cheese.
That spot was no use for me: I couldn’t hit it with anything. Instead, I moved a bit down the slope and I was able to land a couple shots. Eventually it jumped right onto that spot and followed me up the hill, but I just got on Torrent and, as a mage, kept hitting it with Loretta’s Bow at a safe distance. Bird goes back down the cliff and it’s rinse and repeat until it’s dead. Kinda annoying and takes a bit of time, but it worked.
This bird feels genuinely impossible on NG+7 and is easily the worst boss i’ve ever fought. A shame to see fromsoft fall so low in boss design cause this is the most lazy tedious and annoying shit I can come up with. I normally hate cheesing bosses but when the boss does 70% of my health with a single hit and never stops attacking or moving and most my attacks pass through him this boss deserves it
Thanks again my friend for another great Cheese article. I took out that Apostate Derelict (Mausoleum) using the Jar Cannon and the large Lightning Bolts from the opposing cliff top. Holy Water Pots are my weapon of choice against Death Rite Birds. I always take between 6-8, but have killed it in 3 after getting in a couple of headshots.
I didn’t kill the bird this way, but I found something nearly as cheesy: put on Shard of Alexander, Carian Filigreed Talisman, Roar Medallion, and anything you want for the last slot. Put Bestial Roar on a weapon of your chose with the scaling of your choice. Spawn the bird, get it in combat, and run/ride to the point where it just strafes left and right or backpedals as it tries to leash. You can yell at it until it’s dead and it won’t really do anything unless you get too close.
The mel. Rot flower auto proc rot and takes 50 hp down you have to get close to blast it under him, you can just watch the health tic down but I noticed it stopped at 50-60 % down, but then I get to exited roll or jump like crazy and took me awhile just had to calm down- I’m using a faith build my dex build I skipped and in new game, my intelligence build I was going to skip but now going to try- seems rot has the most damage! I do have enough faith and arcane to use rot breath just not sure how many hits to proc-
Love the game, but bosses have definitely been lazy this time round’ sad. Maybe they’ll tweak some of the main mobs abit and tone them down and a few main bosses need to be turned up. Just odd to take hours on a side boss just to mop up a main boss in one try 5 mins later. A little underwhelming in some places where it shouldn’t be and vice versa.
1st death rite bird took 8 attempts and 2nd bird took 30-40 minutes, im lvl 34 vigor wich is a pain, However i needed the ghostflame spell cause im a death spell mage build:P just killed them normally and wasnt to bad to learn, i was rolling to early but now i got the mechanics down:) Most deaths were from rolling off the cliff or getting stuck agains the rocks.
This works great but be aware that the bird can follow you up there with a few jumps or just walk up the slope the way you came. Not all is lost, though. If he follows you, quckly circle back around and go back to where you trigger him to spawn. The bird will try to follow you by jumping down and will die from the fall. If he manages the fall, you’ll be able to repeat the first method and ride back up to the top.
Awesome article! thank you for that Just a tip for those who have Melee builds: if you haven’t stats enough to cast Rotten Breath, you may alternatively use Lion’s Long Bow casting Radahn’s rain from the privileged position showed at the article; using Radahn’s spears, you may take that annoying bstrd down with just 15 rounds with no effort, using any other great arrow may take few more rounds with the same flawless result. Thanks again!
I’m unable to summon people for help for some reason so thank u I’m so much more proud of the genius of doing it this way then grinding for hours to get the damn annoying birds health bar slightly lower than I had gotten it before… the lore is that when u fall over here the bird follows u and falls to its depths… classic misdirection
still working as of 4/18/24 for anyone having issues make you u fallow the tutorial to a t, along with the jump, try moving a little to the left on the 2nd jump facing north. it took me around 10 tries for it to actually kill the bird, also use the gold scarab for some extra runes while ur at it, got over 400k when i got the bird.
