Spell Charging In Elden Ring?

In Elden Ring, players can charge spells to increase their potency and release more powerful versions without consuming more resources. This is done by holding down the mouse button L1. Many spells can be charged by holding down the button, usually resulting in a 20 damage increase and bigger AOE. The talisman also increases their potency even further.

To cast spells in Elden Ring, players need to equip a staff in either hand and toggle the top option of their hotbar to select the desired spell. Charging spells is a new feature that allows players to hold down R1/RB for longer to boost the damage output of a spell or skill at no additional FP cost. This damage boost is not huge but is enough to make them more effective.

In a Vaati video, he showed how to charge spells to make them more effective by holding L1. Many spells can be charged by just holding the button, resulting in a 20 damage increase and bigger AOE. Charging incantations can be done by holding down the bumper before releasing it, typically increasing their potency and using the staff like a weapon.

All classes initially possess two memory slots, which can be augmented through various means.

Why can’t I use Incantations?

To use Incantations in Elden Ring, players must equip a Sacred Seal or similar catalyst. There are various types of Seals available throughout the game, some offering better base damage and scaling, and the Dragon Communion Seal can scale Incantations with Arcane instead of Faith. Players can start with a Sacred Seal for the Prophet and Confessor starter classes, but other classes can acquire one early. Incantations can be equipped at Sites of Grace, with the number depending on the number of Memory Slots players have.

They have several stat requirements and can be bought from trainers. Players can obtain eight Prayerbooks containing more Incantations, but they cannot use them directly. Elden Ring’s weather affects spell efficacy, with raining spells dealing less damage and lighting damage being enhanced.

  • Fun fact: The left rock dropping off of Rock Sling is what it’s range is SUPPOSED to be and, if you cast with your main hand (R1), all three rocks will drop there. Rock Sling is a bit bugged, however in that, when cast in your off hand (L1), the middle and right rock have a range of whatever you have locked on to. This essentially means that Rock Sling as the longest range of any spell at nigh-unlimited. The only restriction is if you can lock on to a target. For example, I killed Astel from the other side of his boss arena with Rock Sling by targeting his head and spamming Rock Sling. I only needed to dodge when he fired his beam attack or went for a tail attack. Literally nothing else could hit me. Astel’s room is also massive, but you can target a boss so long as you can see it… so yeah… unlimited range pot shots to Astel’s head (his weak point) and I was easily able to defeat him.

  • Legitimately great tips as usual. I find you guys strike a very fair balance between hype/algo-whoring and just downright good info on the game. I especially like how you showcase lesser used weapons, and I’ll happily accept the price of all those weapons being “ULTIMATE WEAPONS” I apparently “CAN’T MISS” 😉 But really though I understand the hustle and I’m just happy you’re showcasing actually broad aspects of the game to new players instead of just meme meta shit like a lot of websites. Cheers and keep it up!

  • For the bow trick, if you notice after using it, the target will be just above your chest, and at the bottom of your neck. You can actually aim that way, place the target at that point (just above your chest at the base of your neck), tap forward slightly to ensure your character is oriented that way in truth, not just your camera, then proceed. No items required. Only issues you may run into is hats can cause issues, especially big hats. But, just remove them, orient, then put them back on.

  • Ahhh. Mr Josh, but if you wanna make articles on niche and cheesy ways to get the job done, especially as a sorcerer, then I am truly surprised you haven’t talked about night maidens mist yet. That is the coolest and most convenient spell as a sorcerer I ever used. The most underrated spell there is. It comes in handy in so many situations where you want to completely avoid damage and cheese the enemy.

  • Does Ambush Shard’s range increase overlap the range at which you can be invisible? And since I don’t PvP, does casting break the invisibility? Because if those things work out you could just sneak around following people invisibly and slapping them with invisible knives till they drop or you run out mana/they run out of healing.

  • OMG – How did I not think about Ambush Shard? Anyone know the relative damage comparison between Shard and a Greater Pebble? Does shard gain any damage increase by a specific staff? My go to is a Carian +10. All the FP Pots and dodging I have wasted whacking Knights with their shields up for 40-60 dmg a pop trying whittle them down before they destroyed my squishy mage.

  • Oho man, that rock pun hits like a hammer on my tippy toes. Thanks for this, I actually tested this talisman out once I first got it but it didn’t boost the range of any of the sorceries I had tried it out on so I had assumed that it didn’t work for any of them. I just went back and re-tested to make sure something hadn’t been changed in a patch and it looks like a lot of the more basic Pebble type sorceries still don’t get a bonus from the arrow reach talisman, but the fact that any of them at all do is really cool. Also, while the telescope/binoculars can be used for free aiming like in Souls games, they do lack that “oh so precise” reticle that you get from lugging around a heavy short bow with your wizard noodles. Since the target lock distance in Elden Ring is far greater than the Souls games I’ve never found any good uses for telescope aiming here.

  • Anyone kno! What! Greaves and hands he uses with his mage armor! I liked his outfit so much! I’ve been tryna recreate it! But I can’t seem to find the right greaves and hands he is using?! Cuz it looks really good! With the robes! An stuff! It flows well! So if anyone knows! Lemme kno! I’d appreciate it!

  • Wait, seriously? This is awesome to know that this Talisman interacts with the spells! What other Talismans have we been overlooking thinking they wouldn’t affect our build?!… does this affect the Cannon of Haima in any way? What about the Rancor spells? Would it extend how far out the Briars of Sin goes (doubtful)? What about the Carian spells for their activation range? Glintstone Arc? What about the Glintstone projectile spells particularly the “invisible” versions? What about Magma shot (I remember this having short range)?… there’s just so many spells that I’m curious about with how they might interact with this Talisman! I can’t wait to test all of them out… I wonder if this would give us back even a little bit of Comet Azur’s old range… wait, what about the Miracles? In what way does this Talisman affect those if any?? This game is just awesome having all kinds of interactions with these different effects with other abilities that you wouldn’t initially think of!

  • I wish Ambush Shard would really benefit from Staff of Loss. It’d be so good in PvP Talismans for +12% and +8% to magic Double Loss or high Scaling staff + Loss Arrow’s Reach + Concealing Veil Arrow’s Reach puts Ambush Shard outside of visible range for Concealing Veil You could just cast it once and disappear again, and change position And just be so annoying during invasions Without that it’s still annoying, but with way less damage

  • Now this adds a good bit for my gravity spellblade, since rock sling is her bread and butter long range attack. Using pure gravity sorcery does mean you generally have to be pretty close for your spells and effects to hit, but this gives that little extra reach to catch enemies off guard. Wonder if it effects Meteorite and Meteorite of Astel?

  • Best tip ever! Ambush with arrows reach has been a game changer for me. Saw this the day you uploaded the article, I don’t usually comment but you really deserve kudos’ for all the great info. I haven’t tried pvp yet, new to the dark souls franchise so I’m sure I will need more practice. But this tip at least has my pve has been a game changer!

  • That has some great potential in PVP vs melee builds. You get them used to the time from cast to roll then cast something different from the front that takes slightly longer to get there and they roll into your next spell. Then add in some hovering blades on top while mixing up your casting and that will mess with those (like me) that have slower reflexes.

  • Cool article; the bow/binoculars trick for aiming spells was a thing in Dark Souls as well. You can also train your eyes to do this without the need of a zoom tool (bow/binoculars).; the practice is like aiming without a crosshair. One thing to consider when free aiming spells is that you won’t get that homing mechanic most missile spells have. The spell will simply go where you pointed/aimed.

  • I have a good build you should make a article on. Power stance estocs or good dex thrusting swords. The move set is fast and often times people don’t expect it. When imbued with a bleed or frost affinity it smacks the opponent. Cousing bleed or frost after a few stabs. I did this with a dex and arcane build. With both imbued with bleed. Frost and bleed worked well to. A dex, int and arcane. Would smack. Even better. Bleed then frost bite upon a few hits the enemy dead within a few attacks. Hope this was a good suggestion.
