In Pathfinder, you gain total cover for attacks that pass through an edge, and no cover for attacks that do not. The shield does not provide cover against targeted spells; a spellcaster can cast a spell on you by targeting the shield you are holding. Some spells allow you to directly target a creature, an object, or something that fits a more specific category. The target must be within the spell’s range and you must be able to see it or perceive it with a precise sense to target it normally.
You must have a clear line of effect to any target that you cast a spell on or to any space in which you wish to create an effect. If you are Large or larger, the first square can run along the edge of any square of your space. You cannot aim a cone so that it overlaps your space.
Staining a spell doesn’t stipulate that the target of the spell being sustained is within the range of the spell, only that the spell is active and has a sustained effect. Swarms are not generally immune to Flanking, but the specific situation of sharing space prevents it. As an optional rule, when a creature casts an emanation or burst spell with the text “centered on you”, treat the creature’s entire space as the spell’s point of origin.
In Pathfinder, there are two abilities that allow moving through spaces that are too small without taking penalties: squeeze spell and Teleportation spells (Dimension Door, Teleport, Plane Shift, Misty Step). You must have a clear line of effect to any target that you cast a spell on or to any space in which you wish to create an effect.
A spell with a range of touch requires you to physically touch the target. You use your unarmed reach to determine whether you can touch the creature. To use a counterspell, you must select an opponent as the target of the counterspell by choosing to ready an action and elect to wait. In other words, if you can see the target, you can cast spells at the target if they appear at the target and do not travel to the target.
