Sprint has launched the Magic Box, an LTE-Advanced User Equipment (UE) Relay product designed to enhance indoor signal strength and data throughput. The Magic Box Gold is a self-optimizing and self-configuring small cell that surveys 4G signals from suitable provider cell towers and uses GPS to accurately determine its location. It requires no customer premise backhaul and provides data coverage, not voice coverage.
The Sprint Magic Box Silver unit needs to be placed on a windowsill to receive the signal from outdoors and boost it indoors. To set up and return the Magic Box, download the Sprint Setup Assistant app for both iPhone and Android. Since T-Mobile took over Sprint in March, the Magic Box was discontinued, leaving users without a signal booster.
A Magic Box is a cell signal repeater or “small cell” that must be within range of an existing cell tower, which is about 14 miles. To use the Magic Box, unplug it from power, turn the Sprint Magic Box Voice Amp to expose the back of the unit, and place the Sprint Magic Box Voice Amp on the TREBL. Long press the Bluetooth button for up to 5 seconds to pair with your mobile device. After successful enablement of Bluetooth, the Magic Box can be used to connect to the nearest Sprint cell site.
In summary, the Sprint Magic Box is a compact unit that enhances indoor signal strength and data throughput by using one backhaul (LTE or WiFi) and creating a new signal.
