Monastery Swiftspear is a powerful Stage 1 combat creature that dominates Modern aggro decks. It can trigger any spell that doesn’t have the type creature, and it thrives in decks with instant speed spells. In RDW, there are 12 creatures and 26-28 noncreature spells, while the rest are just burn spells.
Sweatherspear facilitates huge swings out of nowhere, especially when paired with other creatures like Balmor, Battlemage Captain, and Dreadhorde Arcanist. The calligraphy of combat is written with strokes of sudden blood, and it facilitates huge swings out of nowhere.
Monastery Swiftspear can be run in every pure aggro deck, as it is good enough in its role to be run in many different ways. Threatening a spell is usually enough to get it by 2/2 blockers, and without any spells, a 1 mana haste 1/2 is not far behind the curve.
Monastery Swiftspear doesn’t benefit much from casting counterspells, but it can be used to keep up spells. It’s an ability that triggers when a player casts a spell resolves before the spell that caused it to trigger, even if that spell is countered. Only use Monastery Swiftspear if most of the deck is 1 mana burn spells.
In summary, Monastery Swiftspear is a powerful Stage 1 combat creature that can be used in modern aggro decks. It can trigger powerful swings and is not necessary for maintaining high P/T.
