In D and D 5E, a wizard can choose a number of spells from their spellbook equal to their Intelligence modifier and wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which they have spell slots. A 3rd-level wizard has four 1st-level spells. The Wizard table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher.
A Wizard knows between 9 and 290 spells in 5e, depending on their level and access to spellbooks. A 1st-level Wizard knows six 1st-level spells and three cantrips. Each time a character gains a wizard level, they can add two wizard spells of their choice to their spellbook. The Dungeon Master’s Guide covers starting wizard spells, and to determine what spells are in the beginning wizard’s spellbook, refer to the Dungeon Master’s Guide.
A wizard starts with 6 1st level spells and 2 each level they gain. At the first level, they have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of their choice. At the 3rd level, a wizard should have 3 cantrips and 12 spells (up to 2 at level 2), and at level 20 they have 44 spells.
A new wizard’s spellbook usually contains detect magic, read magic, and about 4 other spells either that the player picks and the DM approves or that the DM does. A 1st-level Wizard knows 6 1st-level spells and 3 cantrips. Every time they level up, they learn an additional 2 spells of their choice.
In summary, a Wizard can start with 6 spells and gain 2 spells per level past level 1, learning 44 spells without finding any.
