The Pentair STA-RITE U-3 Skimmer installation manual is available for download. The manual provides instructions on how to install pool skimmer flapper doors, which are easy and quick. To install a pool skimmer flapper door, turn off the pump and filter, remove the skimmer basket, and remove the old flapper. The installation process involves removing the cover, basket, and float valve, plugging the equalizer inlet, and replacing the basket.
For a weir door replacement for a ground skimmer, hold the weir up to starve the skimmer of water and close the float valve, directing all flow through the main drain. The new part can be installed through the skimmer cover by sliding the hinge bracket down between the slots and re-installing the single center screw.
A Pool Tool skimmer weir conversion kit is available to convert a skimmer to the old-style swim quip floating weir. The universal weir doors on a spring rod are the easiest to install. The installation process is relatively simple and takes only a few minutes.

The swimming pool flapper is also called a weir door or weir gate. My pool skimmer was made by Hayward. My skimmer flapper …
Buy the correct size weir gate to begin with. The weir gate is usually about 1/8″ smaller than the skimmer opening. The skimmer’s manufacturer name/model can often be found molded into the bottom of the skimmer cover or inside somewhere.Your 8-3/8″ weir gate is most commonly used in a Sta-Rite U-3 skimmer. The reverse problem, installing an 8″ weir gate in a larger opening skimmer causes much of the flow to go around the edge of the small weir gate and not over the top, so the skimmer doesn’t skim very well. CMP/Custom Molded Products makes an array of universal weir gates in various sizes in white, gray and black, all made in USA. CMP’s catalog has a cross-reference of which skimmers use which size weir gates on page 115.
I’VE watched 3 articles. all have DIRTY pools. even though this isn’t the same brand as mine, it is the most helpful. cause I can see actually what he is doing. HINT: I also use a hair net (like lunch ladies) to line my basket to keep all the little tiny bugs from floating back out into the water. I just empty it every week. thanks for a great article !!
I just found this Weir in my Garage. I figured it was the Skimmer Door. It was never on since we moved here. I’m going to try to fit it in tomorrow when it’s light out. It may be broken, but we shall see. Never knew you needed one. Read that it helps with Skimmer Suction, etc. If mine is broken I may need to get a replacement.
I was still not happy with the weak skimmer pull of the top of my pool water. Still too many bugs, pollen, Etc. I found if I raised the Weir door up with my fingers just 3/8 to 1/2 inch, it “dramatically increased the waterfall effect” and now the skimmer pulls in pool water from 2-3 ft. out. You should lift the door just a bit using your fingers and see for yourself… If you go too much higher, like a full inch, you will see the water level drop in your skimmer housing. You do Not need or want to go up that high. So now I ordered this Rubber Door stop “Wedge” and inserted it under the door to raise it about 3/8″ and keep it there. Works great! I did drill a small hole in the flat edge of the Wedge to be able to fix it so it dose not fall into the suction line if it came loose during swimming activity. But it really does stay in place. Shepherd Hardware 9133 Heavy Duty Rubber Door Wedge, Brown.. Only $1.97.
i just realized my skimmer box has the clips on the bottom like yours but also has clips on top. i knew i had a second skimmer door in my equipment room so I went and found it and it snapped right in on top! are you supposed to run 2 doors? seems to work fine with both in, maybe a little better suction than just the bottom on in
I have an old pool and if it was built when the house was built, that would be 1973. I bought the house 10 1/2 years ago, and there’s a lot of settling in this area which used to be a tomato field, which has caused settling cracks on one quadrant of the house, in a pavered over partially collapsed pebble terrazzo pool deck, and then in the pool itself. A few years ago several large cracks on the far side of the pool toward the deep end and around and below the skimmer required repair by draining the pool, cutting into the concrete, injecting waterproof foam, stapling the cracks and then covering the repair with cement. The major cracks have held up but recently the pool was leaking about an inch a day through, as it turned out, new cracks in the crack repair in the inlet to the skimmer. These were taken care of at a smaller charge by the same outfit, without draining the pool, using two types of epoxy. Unfortunately, the skimmer weir door, I discovered the next day, had been broken out and thrown away for the repair. This is an older pool and there is no plastic extension from the skimmer, which is round– the inlet is formed by the tile. Maybe the the weir door attached at the opening of the skimmer box on the plastic, but there is a rather large raised hump along the bottom of juncture between the tile and the box now from the epoxy repair. I think I’ll let my pool guy, who can try out all the different sizes of the samples of weir doors he has on hand, install a new one even though it might be about twice the price, say for example, $30 instead of $15.
So damn informative and makes sense also. Thanks for the info. My pools been missing the wier for the last forever to a point I don’t know what part to buy or how it was even supposed to look. This will stop the floating chlorinator from getting trapped in the suction of the skimmer right? That’s my biggest problem I’m trying to solve when the filter is running the floating chlorinator goes around and gets stuck in the suction of the skimmer over and over. I want the skimmer to get bugs and leaves but not the chlorinator or thermometer. Hahaha
After perusal this article I noticed my pool doesn’t have a weir. I went to go take a closer look. The pins and spring were in place but I guess the big part had broken off. I took the skimmer basket out to clean out the debris. I got distracted and forgot to put the skimmer basket back in. I reach in to take the spring piece out so I can measure it. As I’m taking it out, the spring falls out of the plastic piece I’m holding and another smaller plastic piece falls out from the inside of the piece I’m holding. They both get sucked into my suction line since I forgot to put the basket back in place. I cut off the pump. I check the pump basket that is right before the filter. The plastic piece was there, but not the weir spring. I decide to run the pump some more with the skimmer on full suction. Still no spring. When I turned the knob to divert the suction to the skimmer. I think I hear the spring inside that knob. I’m not sure how to get it out. I tried for over 1 hour. I even tried using a water hose to push water through. How can I get the spring out? Will it hurt anything if I never find it? Thanks
Hi David wondering if a new weir gate with pins will work to replace a 20 year old gate that had notches to snap in to molded holes in skimmer. The notches have worn down and the molded holes just eroded. DO I need to remove a scar that is in middle of bas in skimmer opening? Will that make it easier to use a new gate with pins or can i just leave as is and put in a new gate with pins in same opening? Really unclear on this. Thanks for any advice. I’d have you over but when we spoke a few years back you said you didn’t work Silver Lake area. Dang.
I liked that you told me how to remove the old skimmer, but I have no idea what happens when you turn the pump off. If the pump is on, you do not need a door. The door really only needs to be there when the pump if off, as there is plenty of sucking when the pump is on. So, can you tell me if the new off market door works as well as an original Pentair Part? Is there enough float in to raise it up to the top when the pump is off?
I am calling “bullshit” on this one. In the article, the guy waves his flathead screwdriver and says he used it to pop out the base piece. Really? Why don’t you show us how it is done? I bought a Hayward OEM SP1070-K weir kit and set to work. After removing the screw, I used a regular flathead screwdriver, a stubby one and a tiny one — as well as needle nose pliers and website lock pliers. Over the next hour, from the deck and inside the pool, all I did was chip off little pieces of plastic from that base piece. Today, I am going to hire Pinch-a-penny to bring whatever special tool they have to complete the job. If you are going to make a demo article, have the courtesy to show the complete job, all the steps and don’t gloss over the most important step. Likewise, if you are going to comment on a article, you really should have at least attempted the work described.
