The western back nine has the characteristics of a British Isles links course, with extensive perimeter mounding, pot bunkers, and large, expansive, sandy waste areas bordering lush green, rolling, sweeping, and perfectly manicured fairways.

When did the Dunes Hotel open?
The Dunes, a tenth resort on the Las Vegas Strip, opened on May 23, 1955, and attracted celebrities like Cesar Romero, Spike Jones, and Rita Moreno. The resort was one of four new Las Vegas resorts to open within a six-week period, resulting in financial trouble for each. The Las Vegas Valley had been overbuilt with hotel rooms during a time of lessened demand, and the Dunes was the southernmost resort on the Strip.
A Dunes attorney blamed the resort’s financial trouble on a persistent losing streak in its casino, which Rice believed was due to competing with other resorts for expensive live entertainment. The resort had numerous creditors, including McNeil Construction, which filed a $166, 000 lien against the ownership group, representing unpaid salary. The group refused to pay the balance, stating that the construction contract had been violated.
In August 1955, Sands Hotel Corporation, owner of the Sands Hotel and Casino, agreed to lease and operate the struggling Dunes. A three-day celebration was held to mark the management change, with singer Frank Sinatra leading the ceremony.
Sands closed the casino portion in January 1956 due to falling profits, making it the third Las Vegas casino to close in recent months. Live entertainment also ceased, although the hotel remained open. Rice blamed disagreements within Sands for the casino’s failure, and the group lost $1. 2 million operating the Dunes and relinquished control on February 1, 1956.
Has Diamond Resorts been sold?
Hilton Grand Vacations has completed its $1. 4 billion acquisition of Diamond Resorts, causing shockwaves in the timeshare industry. The merger is expected to “absorb” the Diamond brand, assimilating the Diamond Resort collection, owners, and sales teams into the Hilton brand name, reputation, and culture. The merger is expected to expand vacation options with additional destinations like Lake Tahoe and Sedona, Arizona. Concerns from HGV owners lie around Diamond’s historically idiosyncratic sales process, which Hilton is interested in addressing.
Both Diamond and Hilton Grand Vacation owners express both excitement and concern about the acquisition. Hilton Grand Vacations and its upscale sibling Hilton Club already have different booking windows for members. A new, more affordable Hilton timeshare sub-brand, Hilton Vacation Club, will be launched, positioned just below Hilton Grand Vacation Club, offering significantly lower entry price points, about $20, 000 lower, to accommodate the Diamond Resort inventory and its owners.

Hello Explorers! This is the long overdue final installment of our hotel hopping tour we did back in September. Of course, with the …
I just booked a trip in July here! Very excited to check it out and it’s close to Disney. Our “go to” resort was booked up so happy to see this one. Can you recommend a newly renovated building not near the crowded pool? Also how is accessibility for a mobility scooter I have? I assume being a hotel all areas are accessible. Thank you for the great article 👍💕
Like no 15, I am perusal your article right now, so please forgive if you answer this question and I have not gotten to it yet. I see that the resort is spread out, I am considering booking here and bringing my parents. It appears there is not an internal shuttle for the resort, hence the walking you mentioned LOL. Do you know how frequent the shuttles take you to Disney or Universal? And what times the shuttles start and stop for the day? This looks like a really pretty resort.
