Was Renowned As A Witchcraft Expert?

Reverend Hale, a renowned witchcraft expert from Beverly, Massachusetts, arrives in Salem with confidence in his ability to detect and eradicate witchcraft. His zeal for discovering witchcraft allows others, particularly Abigail, to manipulate him. The amount of evidence for witchcraft when he arrives in Salem overwhelms him, but he is an intellectual man who sees himself as a Puritan version of the FBI agents.

In Arthur Miller’s play, “The Crucible”, Reverend Hale is depicted as a knowledgeable clergyman summoned to Salem to investigate claims of witchcraft. His job is to diagnose witchcraft if it is present and then provide a necessary cure through conversion or by removing the “infected” inhabitants from Salem. As his belief in witchcraft falters, so does his faith in the law. In Act IV, it is he who counsels the accused witches to lie and confess their supposed sins to save their own lives. In his change of heart and subsequent despair, Hale gains the audience’s sympathy but ultimately loses his faith in the law.

In the play, Reverend Hale is portrayed as a witty man with great knowledge of witchcraft and is called upon to confirm what has entered the town of Salem. He initially takes witchcraft very seriously, believing there was something going on in Salem. However, as his belief in witchcraft falters, so does his faith in the law. In Act IV, it is he who counsels the accused witches to lie and confess their supposed sins to save their own lives.

In his change of heart and subsequent despair, Hale gains the audience’s sympathy but ultimately becomes tormented by guilt and doubt. In the end, Reverend Hale’s role in the play evolves from a confident expert on witchcraft to a man tormented by guilt and doubt.

  • Wow, your interpretation of Rev. Hale is so different than mine. At least as far as the movie’s interpretation of the character goes, I don’t find him arrogant at all. I find him to be a man who deeply believes in his faith, his knowledge, and the system. No arrogance. Boastful??? Not at all. Hale is one of the better parts of this movie, too bad the actor who did such a great job never really received recognition for his superb work.

  • @JxL483 Thanks for the comment. I actually made these articles for my own classes who *do* have to write about the expression on Hale’s face since they are drama students. It just happens that these articles have become quite popular. However, now our specification has changed they are redundant. But it’s still nice to see that people are getting good use from them. Thanks for your comments. 🙂
