The Mahabharata portrays Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, wielding the Sudarshana Chakra during significant events such as the beheading of Shishupala and the aiding of Arjuna in the Kurukshetra War. The Sudarshana Chakra is portrayed as a divine weapon capable of destroying evil forces and ensuring justice. It is used in almost every leela of Krishna’s before returning to Vaikuntha.
The Sudarshana Chakra is not a proof of its existence, as Paundraka Vasudava, an imposter mentioned in Bhagavatam, also used such weapons. In one example, Krishna beheads the rapacious Shishupala with the Sudarshana Chakra, which was also used to cut the celestial mountain Mandrachal Parvat for churning the Milky ocean. Contrary to the belief that the Sudarshan Chakra was given to Lord Krishna, ancient texts suggest it was an inherent weapon possessed by him from birth.
In the epic Mahabharat, the Sudarshan Chakra beheads Shishupala for his avaricious behavior. Sri Krishna uses the divine disc to create an A. Krushna usually holds the Sudarshan-chakra on His little finger while Vishnu on His index finger. In the Mahabharata, Shisupala is beheaded by Krishna after he invokes the Chakra.
Vishnu did not get the Sudarshana Chakra directly from Vishwakarma but from Shiva, as described by Upamanyu in the Anushasana. The Sudarshan Chakra was the primary weapon of Lord Krishna during his Avatara, used to slay several wicked kings and Asuras.

He meditated on Mahadeva and gathered 1000 lotus petals, but when he was short of one, he pulled out his eye, known as Kamalanayani, meaning the One With Lotus-Like Eyes. Lord Shiva granted the Sudarshan Chakra to Vishnu to fight the asuras. Another legend suggests that Surya Dev’s wife Sanjana urged her father Vishwakarma to help her due to her exhaustion from bearing the excessive heat.
Was Sudarshan Chakra used in Mahabharata?
The Mahabharata is a Hindu epic that depicts the divine discus, a weapon attributed to Vishnu, as a weapon used by Krishna to behead Shishupala and obscure the sun during the Kurukshetra War. The Sudarshana Chakra, a divine discus, is portrayed on the right rear hand of Vishnu, who also holds the Panchajanya, Kaumodaki, and Padma. In the Rigveda, it is considered Vishnu’s symbol as the wheel of time. The discus later evolved into an ayudhapurusha, a fierce form of Vishnu used for demon destruction.
The term “Sudarshana” comes from Sanskrit words meaning “good/auspicious” and “vision”. The word “Chakra” is derived from the root “kram” or “rt” or “kri” and can refer to various metaphorical aspects, such as the wheel of a carriage or the sun’s chariot. In Tamil, the Sudarshana Chakra is also known as Chakratalvar (disc-ruler).

Nitish Bhardwaj was chosen and blessed by the Lord himself for this role. There is something about him and the way he has portrayed Lord Krishna that makes it feel like as though it is Lord Krishna himself there. Om Namo Narayanaya 🙏 All of the actors who were part of this most extraordinary show were blessed, for they were all perfect in their roles.
Bhisma had defeated everyone including Arjun. He was that powerful. Vasudev ultimately asked Pandavas to ask Bhisma himself how to defeat him which they did. Bhisma asks them to put Shikhandi infront as he would not fire an arrow on a kinnar. And so Arjun fires his arrow at Bhisma with Shikhandi in front.
No recreation of mahabharat can match the level of this one. Kudos to all the actors, what gesture, what dialogue delivery. Awesome acting, if we ever try imagine the real characters of mahabharat, these legends come to our minds. Especially Mukesh Khanna as bhishm pitamah, gufi paintal as shakuni nd puneet issar as duryodhan.
Shri Krishna’s policy – take a vow for a great reason and be determined to abandon it for a greater reason (always by, for and of Dharma). A life lesson which was important to be taught to Bhishm who was overly obsessed by his vow. It applies to everyone till eternity. I wonder why Lord did not consider Bhishm worthy enough to be terminated by his Sudarshan. Have never seen or heard of Lord revoking his magnificent disc once initiated. Thus Bhishm lost the biggest opportunity of his life. Evidently, he was destined to be subdued by the hands of Nara and not by Narayana.
Shri Krishna Would’ve never killed Bhishma Pitamah.. it was just to make Arjuna realise of his duties.. otherwise, we all know of his Virat Roop.. he could’ve killed all the Kauravas and ended the war in no time.. Friends, Mahabharat is a story that teaches us the base of Sanatan dharma.. Karma and Detachement from Anger, Greed, Lust and Result.. JAI SHRI KRISHNA 🙏🙏
Jo ye samajh ni paa rhe ki Bhishma Pitahamaha jaise Yodha ne Haath kaise jod lie? Unhe yaad dila dun, ki Krishna insani rup mein swayam Brahman the( The Almighty God) Not ब्राहण.. Unhe Gita padhni chahiye ya kmsekm Gita Ka episode dobara dekhna chahiye yahan. Hare Krishna.
This is somewhere I can relate to my Mom’s teachings which is summarized in one word “प्राप्तकर्म” i.e to understand your duties in every living moment and act accordingly. Krishna has not bothered for his oath during the the final settlements between Dharma & Adharma. That’s a befitting reply to the wrongful oath takers like Bhisma & Karna.
