Magic mushrooms, also known as “shrooms”, are wild or cultivated mushrooms containing psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychoactive and hallucinogenic compound. Shrooms can provide numerous health benefits, including reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety in the context of cancer-related psychiatric distress. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) states that mushrooms are the principal source of naturally occurring psychedelics, and the mushroom extract, psilocybin, has historically been used. The benefits of embarking on a full-dose mushroom journey are becoming a hot topic among therapists, researchers, and laymen alike.
Psilocybin therapy utilizes the psychoactive substance in a type of mushroom to create deep changes in the brain. Recent advances have shown that psilocybin may be effective in treating depression and PTSD, with the therapeutic benefits of psilocybin being available in Australia from July 2023. However, leading mycologist Paul Stamets believes that it’s time for fans of psilocybin mushrooms to leave childish slang behind.
In Canada, the production, sale, and possession of magic mushrooms are illegal. However, there is increasing interest in the potential therapeutic uses of psilocybin, and controlled psilocybin therapy shows potential for treating mental and physical health issues.
