The project had been previously set up at Warner Bros. with Will Smith and James Lassiter’s Overbrook Entertainment and Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road shingle, with Smith’s children, Willow and Jaden, being previously attached to star. Aron Eli Coleite was selected to write and direct the film. However, on June 10, 2021, Kibuishi confirmed on Twitter that the movie was cancelled and the film rights had lapsed back to him.

The series has been a source of controversy, with some sources stating that the project was no longer happening and the rights had lapsed back to Kibuishi. The final book, Waverider, was released on February 6th, 2024.
