In astrology, the three modalities (cardinal, fixed, and mutable) are divided into four groups: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Pisces. These modalities describe a person’s attitude in life and are also known as the Quadruplicities. Each zodiac sign is subdivided into three qualities or modalities: Cardinal, Mutable, and Fixed signs.
Modalities, also known as “qualities”, speak to a person’s general approach to life, way of operating in the world, and purpose. They play a crucial role in shaping personalities, influencing behaviors, and guiding destinies. Each sign is influenced by one of the three qualities: Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable. Each quality is defined by a point within each season.
The modalities represent three stages of life: creation (cardinal), preservation (fixed), and transformation (mutable). Each modality encompasses one sign from each of the four elements (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). Western astrology divides the 12 zodiac signs into three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. These quadruplicities are operating systems, as there are four zodiac signs in each group.
Understanding your modalities can help you find ease, harmony, and a happy place in any group setting. By understanding your modalities, you can better navigate your life and thrive in new beginnings and initiations.

The zodiac wheel is composed of 12 astrological signs which are further categorized by modalities: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable …
What modalities are Pisces?
Mystical and all-encompassing, Pisces is the last sign in the zodiac and the only Water sign with a Mutable modality. Their intuitive and compassionate nature contributes to their empathy and innate ability to connect deeply with the emotional and subconscious realms.
Pisces serves as a bridge between the ending of a cycle and the beginning of another, essentially walking between heaven and Earth. This Water sign can quickly adapt to the energetic atmosphere, so they’re more than often gifted artists, musicians and mystics.
What modality is Virgo?
The zodiac has three modalities: cardinal, mutable, and fixed. Mutable signs, including Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, are the thinkers and philosophers of the zodiac. They mark the end of the season or the completion of a cycle, such as Gemini season beginning when spring is ending, Virgo season beginning when summer is ending, Sagittarius beginning when fall is ending, and Pisces beginning when winter is ending. Mutable signs are suitable for signs that fall at the end of a season, as they know change is coming and work hard to prepare for it.
They have the flexibility and open-mindedness to understand situations from various angles, withhold judgment until all information is presented. They are not decisive like other signs, but they have opinions and are open to changing their minds once they make a decision. They can be helpful for those seeking inspiration or guidance in making decisions.
How many modalities are there?
The four primary learning modalities are visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. Students who demonstrate a preference for visual learning may utilize auditory and tactile methods, yet visual methods are likely to be the most efficacious for them.
What are the different methods of astrology?
Astrology, including Western, Vedic, Chinese, Mayan, Sidereal, and Horary, offers various perspectives on celestial influences and offers insights into various aspects of life and personality traits. Western astrology, based on the position of the sun at birth, divides the sky into twelve sections representing different personality traits. Vedic astrology, also known as Jyotish, originates from ancient India and focuses on the position of planets at birth using a lunar mansion system called Nakshatras. Vedic astrology provides insights into career, relationships, and health.
What are the big three all different modalities?
The twelve zodiac signs are classified into four elemental categories and three modalities. The twelve zodiac signs are categorized into three modalities: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. Each sign is a distinctive combination of these elements, with Gemini representing the sole mutable air sign, Libra the second cardinal sign, and Aquarius the third fixed sign. The elements elucidate the fundamental attributes of the signs, whereas the modalities elucidate their function.
What are the modes in astrology?
The modes of astrology are Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Cardinal signs include Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, Fixed signs include Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, and Mutable signs include Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. What are the three branches of astrology?
Horoscopic astrology is a form of astrology that uses a horoscope to interpret the alignment of planets at a specific moment in time. The idea is that the placement of the planets at that moment reflects the nature of that moment and anything born there. This can be analyzed using charts and various rules for interpreting the symbols. One distinguishing characteristic of horoscopic astrology is the computation of the degree of the Eastern horizon rising against the backdrop of the ecliptic at the specific moment.
Any system of astrology that does not use the ascendant does not fall under horoscopic astrology. Modern scientific perspectives have disproven the theoretical basis for horoscopic astrology, and it has been recognized as a form of pseudoscience since the 18th century.
What are zodiac modalities?
The Western zodiac, originating from Babylonian astrology and later influenced by Hellenistic culture, consists of twelve 30-degree sectors that make up Earth’s 360-degree orbit around the Sun. These signs, which include Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces, are named after the constellations the sun moves through annually. Over time, Western astrology’s divisions have shifted out of alignment with the constellations they were named after by axial precession of the Earth, while Hindu astrology measurements correct for this shifting. Astrology was also developed in Chinese and Tibetan cultures, but these astrologies deal with the whole sky.
Astrology is a pseudoscience, with scientific investigations and experimental verification of claims showing no scientific validity or explanatory power. More plausible explanations for the apparent correlation between personality traits and birth months exist, such as the influence of seasonal birth in humans. Astrology relates celestial phenomena to human activity on the principle of “as above, so below”, with signs representing characteristic modes of expression. Scientific astronomy used the same sectors of the ecliptic as Western astrology until the 19th century.
What are the three modalities of zodiac?
The modality of a sign refers to its position in the season it is found in, with each element manifesting in three modalities: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. These modality concepts, also known as quadruplicities, provide unique characterizations for signs. For example, Aries is the cardinal earth sign, associated with action in the material world.
Greek philosopher Empedocles identified fire, earth, air, and water as elements in the fifth-century BC, explaining the universe’s nature as an interaction of love and strife. He believed that all elements are equal, the same age, rule their own provinces, and possess their own individual character.
The elemental categories are called triplicities because each classical element is associated with three signs. The four astrological elements are considered as a direct equivalent to Hippocrates’ personality types, with sanguine = air; choleric = fire; melancholic = earth; phlegmatic = water. A modern approach views elements as “the energy substance of experience”. Some astrologers begin natal chart interpretations by studying the balance of elements in the location of planets and the position of angles in the chart.

What are the modalities of all signs?
The discipline of astrology is comprised of three distinct modalities: cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn), fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius), and mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces). The field of astrology is not merely concerned with the positions of the Sun and the movements of Mercury; it also encompasses insights into the human psyche and the workings of the universe.
📹 The Three Modalities of the Zodiac – Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable
Here is a simple explanation of each modality in less than 10 minutes in a slideshow format! ☀️❄️ “We are born at a given …
1 Mutable (Sun) 1 Fixed (Moon) 3 Cardinal (Mars, Mercury, Venus) The way that my energy works is that the only way that I can stick to something past the cardinal initiation is if it resonates in my heart, which is where my fixed energy comes in at. The only way it’ll resonate in my heart is if there is room for me to adapt, change, and have freedom and flexibility, where my mutable energy can be accommodated. Thank you Molly! This was so resonant for me!
Molly you can look at modalities in a musical sense. A sound is propagated, or cardinal, then it goes to sustain, or fixed, and finally it decays, or mutable. This is the basic way the sound works, though, some ways can be seen as four parts to a sound, I find the three part sound via astrological modes works perfectly if you’re up to some astromusical hijinks ;3 Thank you as always! My Leo Moon -consistently-appreciates you ^^
This is fascinating information and so useful to work with our modalities and not beat ourselves up for not doing something a set way. Everyone would be so much more compassionate and understanding to others, (as well as themselves) if they were aware of this information. With the Great Awakening and Truth Movement it would be interesting to know if those speaking truth are Cardinal & Mutable and those reluctant to hear it are Fixed. It feels like that would be the case and so we should have greater understanding that people react and respond according to their energy modality as well as upbringing, stored trauma and all other energies in them. Thank you for this insight!
In my personal Planets, the Mutable energy is dominant. But in my entire chart, I have Cardinal Earth dominant. I like to initiate things, leadership comes naturally to me. In school, I did like learning new stuff, I can absorb and retain information quickly and have that creepy Virgoan memory (Mercury is the sole dispositor in my chart btw)… I just didn’t think tests and exams were necessary… I legit got frustrated with myself because I wasnt the model university student. It’s only now, 10 years later that I can say that I am friggen brilliant in practice… its like I attended classes throughout semesters, hahahaha! I relate to Olivia Pope of the television show Scandal… I can think of solutions quickly, I am on the ball and can focus (but get exhausted quickly)… Molly, I did get a lot of A HA moments and I’ve been studying astrology for many years now… thank you. ❤👌🏾
My personal planets are all mutable and cardinal – Libra sun, Virgo moon, Libra Mercury, Aries Mars, and Virgo Venus. I really don’t have much fixed energy even in my wider chart, apart from Scorpio ascendant and Leo midheaven. I felt a bit insecure about that (many unfinished projects) but an astrologer who did a reading with me pointed out that it checks out given my “leadership” vibe. Lack of fixed suggests I need to get good at trusting other people as that’s really the best way to fulfil whatever I’m here to do.
My personal planets are mostly fixed, but in daily life I don’t feel very consistant or commited to one thing. I think that is because my moon is in gemini (daily life). And in the other planets is a lot of mutable energy aswell. Now I understand why it has always been a fight. Wanting to focus on longtherm goals but didn’t know how to manage my day to day activities…. Thanks so much Molly 💜😘
Thanks, Molly. 3 cardinals, Asc on cardinal, 2 fixed, 5 mutable. Sun in Aries: “Let’s Go!” Moon in Pisces: “I want a nap!” 5 personal planets 3 in Aries (cardinal), 1 in mutable, 1 in fixed. No wonder I don’t like exercising. Yes, I wish I would have gone to a non-standard school that had a lot of variety (music, self-sufficiency, art, different ways to learn the 3 R’s).
Had to wait til now for this, my mind has been well active.. Well Sun, Mercury in cardinal ♋, great initiator if Energies are aligned… Venus/Mars fixed ♉, sturdy Love & Passions.. Moon mutable ♓, great at exploring and adapting to Spiritual everything 😆 I love the way I am and wouldn’t change myself for anyone…not even my own parents, ever…and they tried hard lol.. My Mars Mercury and Moon are in a good minor grand trine, so there’s plenty of good energy to my essence.. We need to find people that accept us for who we are, but won’t put up with and will call us out on the things they don’t like. If no compromise can be met then they must stay true to themselves.. I came to Earth to be free ✨ and to make it a better place for when I leave whilst enjoying Conciously being Aware and spreading Love and Good Will…and spilling buckets of accumulated truth 😆 When peace arrives I will be much easier going, it’s just the Concious situation at the moment that is keeping me in warrior mode.. Love and Blessings Molly ✨💓🎶🙏🏻
A BIG Thank You Molly for your amazing content!! Super appreciate your style! I’m so curious if you factor the modality of the houses and mesh them with the modalities of the planets and the signs ? For example I have SUN in LEO but in the 7TH HOUSE. Does that mix the Fixed energy AND the Cardinal energy? And to that point a little deeper, technically Cancer is on the Cusp of my 7TH HOUSE so cardinal energy definitely influencing the whole 7TH, right? Super curious! Thank you!
💙So enlightening! One cardinal, two fixed, two mutable. Always enjoyed the same exercise routine for many years, but had to decide how to modify it based on how I felt that day. Also had the same routine at work and enjoyed knowing what to expect. Also helps me understand my strong mutable “Mr Options”husband!😂
It’s a bit confusing though between what these modalities are versus what some signs behave. because a Capricorn (cardinal) is rather very performing on the marathon …career-oriented with long-term goals and very very reliable…he is the one who will climb the corporate ladder though long devotion..whereas the Aries wouldn’t have the same patience.Aries doesn’t think that much before initiating things..he is rushy and risk-taker.A capricorn hates “risks” and will on the other hand analyze very carefully anything in details and rather rely on what has already made its proofs..trust me ..you prefer advices from a Cap because this is 100% proven and secure. Aries is a great coach to help you trust in you and motivate you but do not expect from him the details of what you need to do to achieve your goals. a Virgo (mutable) is typically the person who will take care of their body (obsessed with their health), and this is the sign of mondane tasks (daily work) and unpleasant things that need to be done an Aquarius (fixed) thinks outside the box, changes everything and creates new patterns. The only things that are fixed about this sign are his food tastes and opinions . But he will never stick up to the same job nor do as you tell him to do contrary to a Taurus. well just my observation So my point is also fire, water, air and earth color differently the 3 modalities. After all a cardinal earth sign will still have this tendency to be reliable and traditional (capricorn) a fire cardinal sign (Aries) will still like passion, excitement, adventures, risks, changes etc.
got 4 out of 5 in fixed yet i really feel i live differently and manage myself quit differently then described. yea’ very dedicated and committed but i change a lot every minute, very fickle i feel. only if i look at others i can say oh…. pretty fixed comparing, yea. still i feel at the end of that scale.
Thank you very interesting. I learning astrology. Molly best teacher without a doubt. Beautiful soul inside out. I baffled one question if example I’m Aries first house sun sign. This where I get mixed up. Ascended Scorpio starts 9 o clock which is first house from here I’m confused? So Aries Sun Ascended Scopio first house. So am I the aspects of Scopio in first house ?? I’m Sagittarius in 2nd Capricorn in 3rd house am I looking at Aries Taurus Gemini because they are in these houses so complex? Thank you v much ❤
TY so much Molly for your teachings. I knew about these three groups and how they relate to my Natal chart, but of course now i have learned better thanks to you..as always. I got confused on one aspect though… I have nearly all my personal signs in Virgo (except for my moon Pisces and Venus Leo)..basically I have mutubles and especially Virgo dominant…yet..bothat work and workout I act like a fixed sign….Oh ok I do need options and new passions to get enthusiast, yet i stick for long time with the same.routine…Am I strange ?🙄😁Ok i did extend the count to all my planets (and not to.to the houses…i should have??). Counting all my planets i have 5 mutable, 4 fixed and 3 cardinal…still, as a Virgo dominant I like stabilitu, routine as if i were a fixed sign. Pufff I am.strange. i knew it🙄🙄😂😂😘
