I have the absolute and most sincere respect for these men. I’m a 14 year honorable US Navy Sailor who had a friend on the Ceremonial Guard who went to that billet straight out of bootcamp. Met up with him years later in Iraq after his tour of duty in Ceremonial Guard. These guys train to maximum precision to honor their Country. As an Englishman I can say with one hundred percent confidence, that we always find it funny when we see a tourist get yelled at to moves, whilst perusal the tourist complain that the guard are far to rude. My father was an MP in the Air Force. I have a great amount of respect for these Tomb Guards. I still remember visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while on a field trip in High School. The chap who told off the couple who had thrown their glove was one of the Yeoman Warders, commonly known as Beefeaters. Beefeaters are retired warrant officers who must have served at least 22 years in the armed forces, and have at least Long Service and Good Conduct medals. Every one of them is both a certified badass and a consummate professional.
I had the absolute please to meet with the guards at the tomb of the Unknown with my ROTC unit and help lay a wreath the moment we were behind closed doors they were the coolest guys ever the moment the door opened up it was like flipping a switch. I cherish those memories and i get very furious when i see people disrespecting these guys!!
All of these guards are more patient than they should have to be. We as a world have lost our respect for tradition. Their job is to protect the current and at times past. I am lucky my father returned from Vietnam. I can’t imagine my feelings if my father was one of the many unknown. It would break my heart even more.

When I was a teenager I was in Civil Air Patrol for about 3 years. We trained and did a reenactment of Changing of the Guard at local cemetery. Its a hell of a lot harder than people think and it was a lot of pressure to be perfect. It was disrespectful to the unknown soldier and the real guards. I was and still am proud of being a part of the “ceremony”. If anyone is intrested in viewing its heald at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow Okl. on memorial day weekend. (Or it used to be. I haven’t been there in about 15 years)

A few years ago, we were visiting Windsor Castle and my wife took my picture standing near one of the guards. As I went to walk away, I stumbled and fell slightly towards the guard. He did not move a muscle. As I gained my balance and started to walk away, I apologized. Out of the corner of his mouth he replied, “That’s all right.” I felt foolish for having stumbled but was left with the memory of a guard breaking rank for a courtesy.
When I visited London I very much enjoyed perusal the changing of the guards. I also loved see them guarding. They were amazing sometime I wanted to check and make sure they were breathing they were do dyolly. They never yelled at anyone of us in my family there were 12 of us but, we also were not rude and respected them. It is their military would you do that in the US to anyone in our military working? I enjoyed perusal them it perusal actually pretty cool..I even liked their uniforms. They were extremely dedicated to their job. Just like any military would be. They are trained and have to go through severe training. It isn’t easy and not all men pass it..
That’s so fucking disrespectful to mess with the guards of the tomb of the unknown soldiers. They train for years, and they hold some of the highest regard in the military. They protect the terrible history behind what has happened to those unknowns, and it’s not only directly disrespecting the active soldiers, it’s disrespecting fucking dead people who sacrificed their lives for us, only to be left unknown and without a proper burial. it’s inconsiderate to the pain the families feel after losing their family member.
These soldiers are a true testament to discipline. Had someone thrown a glove at one of the U.S. Secret Service agents guarding the president, they (the dumb tourist) would be full of holes before the glove hit the ground. How they’re able to restrain themselves so well is nothing short of impressive.

The Tomb of the Unknowns is one of the most hallowed places in our nation and for ANYONE who disrespect that place is beyond me. It infuriates me to see this kind of thing and unfortunately it’s happening more and more. While it is fascinating to watch the changing of the guard they are not there for the public. The Tomb has been guarded 24 hrs a day 365 since 1946. I honestly believe they should keep the public back much much farther and the up close viewing should be reserved. At least then maybe they could keep those disrespectful people away.

Every time I see clips like this I’m filled with envy, I can only fantasize of shoving rude customers blocking the way or sending them running after shouting them down. As the daughter of a vet, I learned pretty early in life that you don’t f*** with the guards at the tomb of the unknown. When I learned ALL these soldiers have to endure before even getting leave, much less what they have to do the rest of their lives, I had nothing but respect for them. Don’t f*** with them!!
I think a lot of idiots think these guards are just some kind of ‘performance art’. If they were a little less ignorant and more observant, they’d realise the guards are military personnel on active duty and have the lawful power to take action against troublemakers, including the use of lethal force.

As a Norwegian, in great nations like Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Britain, the monarchy has its place. In Norway its still the king/queen that writes things into law, and that has massive value when the elected government has to answer questions like “how will this improve the lives of the people?” and “who’s lives will this law improve?” and “how will we measure if this law works and who will be held responsible if it does not work?”. Democratic monarchies have a level of protection from the rich and wealthy that republics don’t. Its still illegal to run political adverts in Norway except in severely limited forms at certain times and places. So money does not buy more free speech than your only vote. If I ever see one of these guards I’ll salute them and shout “thank you on behalf of the Norwegian people for your institution giving asylum to the Norwegian government during WW2. That makes you the guard of true freedom and civilization”.
I would love to visit the palace guards. As long as people respect the Sentinels posted, regardless of country, the a person should be able to walk away with a wonderful and insightful experience. My late father was a Coldstream guardsman in WWII standing duty at Buck House, was on duty on 13 June 1944 the night the first V1 hit London, on 26 June he landed at Normandy as part of the Guards Armoured Corps – on 15 April 1945 he drove his tank up to the gates of Bergen-Belson to sights and smells he said were horrific and simply unimaginable, thousands of unburied corpses littered the camp – no food no water – as front line armour they had to keep moving.

Loaded guns… I have no doubt that they not only possess a fully loaded gun, but they know quite well how to use it, and they will use it… keep pushing their loyalty, devotion and patience to the brink. I’ve been the the tomb of the unknown many times in Arlington. It absolutely kills me how some people just go where they want. It’s insane. Like, do you see the 100 other people behind the chains and rails? What would posses someone to think they can just walk up there? Are they truly that stupid? The reason I’ve been so many time is because I live locally and go lay wreaths on tombstones as have been for funerals, and other events. The majority of offenders… Chinese tourists, German tourists, Italian tourists and entitled old Karens.

I’ve only been shouted at by a guard once, and it wasn’t even for me, it was for everyone. It was in 2023 and I was in the Uk for the first time and first time leaving America and the coronation was soon (I would be in wales during the coronation. Everyone was looking at Buckingham Palace (coincidentally the King himself was inside). The Calvary was riding their horses a few minutes earlier so we were wondering if there was an event. So everyone got near or on the gates so a soldier yelled get back. Thankfully everyone listened while still being close so I guess everyone had common sense.
All this guard still playing nice, in my country the guards have right to catch, beaten and lecture the them in their base. So couple years ago a motorist make a headline by riding harley so fast and loud in front of presidential palace, the area is supposed to be sterille, the palace guards chase the trespasser, caught him somewhere in a dense populated area and beaten him in front of people before bring him to their base. Oh of course id visit the royal guards. To be able to see their dedication and discipline first hand would be amazing. The royal guards of the UK and the Old guard of the US are people of utmost dedication and discipline. Having been in the army i can tell you now at first glance it looks easy but it is far far from. I know i wouldnt be able to do that. I mean, I probably could if I actually put the work into it but im not nearly as disciplined and resilient as them.
Being a soldier worthy of respect and being a tourist attraction are not mutually exclusive. They’re real soldiers who have a job worthy of respect, and should not be treated poorly. People shouldn’t throw things at them, laugh at them, get in the way of them performing their job, etc. (although this shouldn’t need to be said because this SHOULD just be true in general). However, the fact that people go to see them also makes them a tourist attraction. Just noting that since a lot of people are saying they aren’t a tourist attraction, even though they attract a lot of tourists lol
I think that Royal Grenadeers should have their uniforms redesigned a bit. Red jackets and bear caps (a bit to big perhaps) are amazing even nowadays, but their shortish trousers and bizarrily shaped large shoes, together with manneric goosestep, make them look not traditional but postitively silly. They look like cartoon characters rather than ferocious warriors. May they look more serious and mordern, they wont have to yell that often.
