What Are The Prayers In Islam Ritualized?

The seven main practices and rituals of Islam include prayers, fasting, pilgrimage, charity, purification, animal sacrifice, and reading the Quran. Salat is one of the five Pillars of Islam, performed five times daily by Muslims. It begins with the proper intention to pray, which can be done in the mind. Muslims perform the five daily prayers (Salah) at dawn, immediately after noon, and in the midday.

The basic steps for Salat include facing Mecca, making an intention in your heart for prayer, saying “Allahu Akbar” (meaning “God is the greatest”), and performing a prostration. At this point, practitioners perform prayers praising Allah, asking for his protection, followed by a recitation of the first verse of the Quran.

The muezzin (one who gives the call for prayer) chants aloud from a raised place in the mosque. When prayer starts, the imam or leader (of the mosque) chants aloud. Salat (or Salah) is the name in Islam for the obligatory prayers performed five times a day, which are a direct link between the worshipper and God.

Muslims prepare for prayer by performing ritual ablutions, called wudu, which involves washing the hands, rinsing the nose and mouth, and performing specific physical movements and recitations while facing the Qiblah (direction of the Ka’bah in Makkah). When worshippers enter the prayer hall of a mosque, they must take off their shoes since many prostrations involve bending and kneeling.

A ritual often includes repetition of actions or words, special objects used in a particular way, and a special order in which things are placed.

The salah is a religious ritual that involves physical movements such as standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting, as well as reciting verses from the Holy Quran in Arabic. In the Isra and Mi’raj story, the angel Gabriel brings Muhammad from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the gates of the first level of heaven. When he reaches the nearest heaven, Gabriel greets the gatekeeper and confirms that he is with Muhammad.

He is welcomed by Adam and is welcomed by Isa (Jesus) and Yahya (John the Baptist), who also greet him as a brother and a Prophet. The story highlights the importance of the salah in promoting faith and unity among believers.

What is done during namaz?

Salah is the main form of worship in Islam, focusing on the Quran and Sunnah prayers. It consists of rak’ah movements, which are specific movements performed before Mecca. The number of rak’ah varies depending on the prayer and may differ according to the madhhab of the performer. Salah can refer to the form of worship in general or specifically to the daily obligatory prayers performed by Muslims, which are observed three to five times a day. Obligatory prayers are the second and most important pillar of the Five Pillars of Islam for Sunnis and one of the Ancillaries for Shiites.

Supererogatory salah can be performed at any time with exceptions or according to the Sunnah. Wadu (Ritual Purity) is a prerequisite for performing salah. Muslims can perform salah alone or in congregation, with some special prayers being exclusively performed in congregation, such as Friday and Eid prayers.

How exactly do Muslims pray?

Muslims perform brief qiyaam, reciting ‘God listens to the one who praises Him’ and ‘To God belongs all praise’ while standing. The phrase ‘God is Great’ precedes each movement, signaling the leader’s next move. In the prostration position, ‘Glory be to God, the Most High’ is repeated three times, with palms, knees, toes, forehead, and nose touching the ground. This practice ensures that only body parts touching the ground touch the ground.

Before a prayer, ablutions are performed, including washing hands, face, and feet. The muezzin chants aloud from a raised place in the mosque, and the congregation follows him in various postures. Each prayer consists of two to four genuflection units (rakʿah), with each unit consisting of a standing posture, genuflection, and two prostrations. At every change in posture, “God is great” is recited. Tradition has fixed the materials to be recited in each posture.

Special congregational prayers are offered on Friday instead of after noon, with a sermon (khuṭbah) that combines local language preaching with Arabic recitation. The sermon usually has a moral, social, or political content, impacting public opinion.

Non-obligatory nocturnal prayers (tahajjud) are encouraged, particularly during the latter half of the night. During the month of Ramadan, lengthy prayers called tarāwīḥ are offered congregationally before retiring.

What are the 5 rituals of Islam?

The Five Pillars of Islam are the core beliefs and practices, including the Profession of Faith (shahada), Prayer (salat), Alms (zakat), Fasting (sawm), and Pilgrimage (hajj). The belief that there is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God, is central to Islam. This phrase is often prominently featured in architecture and objects, including the Qur’an. Muslims become Muslims by reciting this phrase with conviction.

Prayer is a fundamental aspect of Islam, with Muslims praying facing Mecca five times a day, including reciting the opening chapter of the Qur’an. This prayer can be performed individually or in a mosque, guided by an imam. Men gather in the mosque for the noonday prayer on Friday, while women are welcome but not obliged to participate. After the prayer, a sermon focuses on a passage from the Qur’an, followed by prayers by the imam and a discussion of a particular religious topic.

  • SubhanAllah!!!!! A Trillion Trillion Thank Yous Dear Brother. You have explained the 5 daily prayers faithfully without any doubt, fear, judgement or bias… I am eternally grateful and will surely tell Allah you have kept us on the right path as all the past prophets did. (peace and blessings bestowed on to all of them) much love and grace. Allah Akbar

  • Every soul will be detained for what it has done, except the people of the right, who will be in Gardens, 👉asking one another about the wicked ˹who will then be asked˺: “What has landed you in Hell🔥?” 👉They will reply, “We were not of those who prayed (5 daily prayer), nor did we feed the poor. We used to indulge ˹in falsehood˺ along with others, and deny the Day of Judgment, until the inevitable(Death) came to us.” Qur’an 74 (38:47)

  • Thank you. I’m a 15 year old African American girl and my parents are strict Christians, but I believe in Allah swt. The suffering of Palestinians have changed my thinking and my ways. I haven’t (technically) reverted yet or ordered a hijab (out of fear of harassment and peer bullying as well as getting kicked out), but I believe that praying will help me atone until I can buy one. When I next get money I will try to buy the Qur’an, and I’m learning Arabic. Inshallah this journey will be easier for me 🤲🏾❤️

  • I have never felt anything until I started praying to Allah I have spent my whole life searching and when I started learning the Quran praying I learned it is Allah that gives us the peace and purpose Thank you to all the brothers and sisters that want to help us that are looking to convert to Muslim /Islam Thank you for patience kindness and love I may not have been born a Muslim but I will die a Muslim Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar

  • “I recently watched this Islamic article, and I was deeply moved by its content. The article beautifully explained key teachings of Islam with clarity and sincerity, making it easy to understand and reflect upon. The production quality was excellent, and the speaker delivered the message with genuine warmth and respect. I particularly appreciated how it highlighted the importance of faith, patience, and kindness in our everyday lives. This article is a must-watch for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of Islam or seeking spiritual inspiration. Highly recommended!”

  • Recite ayat kursi after every salah. It was narrated that Abu Umaamah said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi immediately after each prescribed prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entering Paradise except death.”

  • Thank you so much for this. I’ve done Ramadan properly this year. It has truly helped me become closer to Allah. As I Christian I have done this to support a friend. But I can see how wonderful Allah is. And this type of praying is something I’ve never seen and, it is a wonderful calling and thanking of Allah. May Allah bless you all. P.s I am 24 and going to buy my first Quran to pray properly. Perhaps convert. May true peace be upon you all.

  • Jazak Allah khair for this beautiful and informative article! This is a great resource for both Muslims and non-Muslims who want to learn about the proper way of praying in Islam. The step-by-step explanation and visuals make it easy to understand and follow. May Allah reward you for your efforts in spreading knowledge and guiding others to the right path.

  • So beautiful, It’s weird, I’m just starting to become a Muslim, and I was a bit insecure, is my faith real? I have yet to read the Quran and investigate more, but this gave me so much peace, I love it, alhamdulillah!! (Bro I’m crying literally out of happyness) 8 months ago I wrote this, mashallah, i do still get these moments while praying, truly beautiful to be close to Allah SWT again, and altough i wasn’t a “muslim” before reverting, I was a muslim in the broad muslim (sorry to be redundant) sense. Basically no matter where you come from, Islam is a reminder of the God you always knew, he who is, Huwa (which is considered a name of Allah SWT, and it also is in the Bible, the short version of YHWH, I recommend you professor Ali Ataie about this btw) Peace my brothers and sisters

  • I took my Shahadah on the 21st of March…..I haven’t learned how to pray yet as I feel it is disrespectful to Allah praying to him when I’m having a hard time getting rid of Alcohol and smoking 😔. I’m a believer but I want Allah to have the whole of me without the alcohol and cigarettes. I’ll get through this insh’Allah 🙏

  • Thank you, I am 17 from America, I come from a Christian background, I found faith in Islam from Dating a hijabi who I planned on marrying, who I’m no longer with, but she helped introduce me into Islam and find faith, because she was the only person I really knew who was Muslim, I was never really taught how to pray, and the closest masjids are hours away from me, I’m going to watch this article and learn how to do Salah, when I’m 18 I’m going to go to a masjid and take my shahada, Islam is truly beautiful and I want to start a Muslim family of my own one day. Subhanallah

  • Thank you for this great article as a new Muslim for about a year now. I struggle with learning to pray properly whether in English or learning to translate the prayer in Arabic. I also appreciated you showing the movements and positioning during prayer which is another area that I’m still need to work on. Overall this article made it easy for to fill in the blanks of areas I needed help. Thank You. As-Salaam-Alaikum!

  • 1 – Whoever says SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi (Glory be to Allah and Praise Him) a hundred times during the day, his sins are wiped away, even if they are like the foam of the sea (Sahih al-Bukhari; #7:168, Sahih Muslim; #4:2071) 2 – whoever says SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi, Subhan-Allahi ‘l-`adheem (Glory be to Allah, and Praise, Glory be to Allah, the Supreme) Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Two words are light on the tongue, weigh heavily in the balance, they are loved by the Most Merciful One ” (Sahih al-Bukhari; #7:67, Sahih Muslim, #4:2071) X

  • Just to make things a bit clear for new Muslims. Praying must be in Arabic only. However, WHILE prostrating AFTER saying “How perfect is my lord the most high” three times in Arabic, it is permissible to ask Allah for anything you want in any language especially for those who can’t speak Arabic or not an Arab.

  • Allahu Akbar🤲🏾 I’m so thankful for the mercy, forgiveness and patience Allah has for not only me but for all of us across this world. I’ve been praying incorrectly since this past Ramadan. My pride and arrogance to search on everything about Islam and becoming a Muslim, but one of the key pillars Prayer… I failed to do. Wow… Allah is so merciful and forgiving to still hear my prayers and still bless me to keep getting better. I think about it and my 3-5 daily prayers I used to do throughout my day were done wrong… wow wow wow Time to get on the program. All Praise is Due to Allah 🤲🏾

  • Thanks for this I’m married to an Arab woman and wanted to show I am down with Islam and want to learn Arabic and customs because I believe it to be a beautiful religion as long as u don’t take the you know what you are good with these ppl and I love them peaceful unless u take the u know what..inshallah I will be a good one…hamdoula

  • For me I pray whenever I feel I need to. I sometimes will close my eyes and imagine the change I want in as silent a way as possible. Feelings become thoughts so relaxing can really help. When there’s something really important happening like a major life change I do this more often. Prayer is making wishes.

  • When I told my parents 5 months ago that I want to join Islam, my mom refused at first but my dad supported me. When my mom heard I’ve reverted, she said if you find peace there no problem. What actually changed my mind and perspective about Muslim was how resilient the people of Palestine 🇵🇸 are and the struggles and pains they’ve endured. It has really not been easy for me to pray cus i don’t understand Arabic and I want to learn.

  • Assalam u Aleikum to all Moslems, whether new or old. This article by our brother has been well made, and may Almighty Allah bless him, for translating it into English, for our understanding, as he goes along. However, may I humbly point out that for people who have just embraced Islam, or are indeed practising Moslems, there is a shorter and easier form of our daily Salat prayer worship, which is also deemed to be correct by our learned Moslem scholars. And, can be obtained easily via the internet. This takes nothing away from this excellent article made herewith, by our esteem and learned brother.

  • Thank god i was born muslim i understood islam is the way growing up i was never that close i didnt pray but never ate pork we all sin but every day i get older i feel more of a draw to islam and to learn things not because im forced beacause i wish it myself inshallah i will start praying today jan 1 2024 inshallah allah forgives my sin and helps me get closer to islam amen

  • Hello .. I am Christian but i started to get involved more with muslim religion and wanted to learn how to pray. Did it only once i even wore a fresh shirt and used a fresh washer mattress but still i am having problems with learning it.. thank you for the article brother wish all the best for everyone around the world. May god bless you all and forgive our sins because i have indeed sinned a lot..hope i get forgiven

  • Hi, how do you pray in the mosque with the crowd together, how do you know which type raka it is (farz, sunnah). Also, when praying sunnah, farz or witr, is it all seperate from each other so do you recite At-Tashahhud & As-Salatul-‘Ibrahimiyyah in the end of each? Also do you do Takbir with hands raised when transitioning from sunnah to farz or vice versa?
