Babylonian, Hellenistic and psychological astrology taught me that astrology is a road map of life with death being the ultimate goal but also like a board game, you can fall into traps half way there even while taking the prescribed route. Sometimes other outside forces and energies push you into taking the backroads and giving you side trips along the way and picking up strangers or dropping off friends at pit stops. If we incarnate to learn certain lessons for our souls evolution this makes perfect sense. I will be 69 this year and have decided to start learning astrology to be prepared for my next incarnation choices. I feel I have lived several different lives within this one lifetime. I tried this on a few charts myself including those of Rob Hand and Winston Churchill. Churchill’s peak period started from 1937 and of course the early part of the 1930s though considered the wilderness years for him were spent understanding Hitler through the lens of history & Louis XIV. And Rob Hand’s peak period coincided with his foray into traditional astrology, the translations, the discovery of Sect, his work with the 2 other Roberts. It’s a brilliant tool. And I’m grateful to Chris Brennan for introducing me to it.
Thank you both so so much for this information. I will likewise go back into my regular existential philosophical space to digest this confirmation of what I’ve observed in my own life. My life has been well-demarcated by extreme and unforeseen (mostly tragic) events from infancy onward, so it is easy for me to recall what was happening during the foreshadowing periods and the LBs themselves, and the beginning and ending of the before, during and after peaks. I also have no planets in-sect, so examining planetary condition and rulership in my natal chart from this ZR vantage was fascinating. Thank you both for sharing this technique and for all of your work researching. It’s fascinating. Neuroscience does not really believe in free will at he moment. It’s a big debate. Studies have shown that decisions are made in the brain before the individual becomes consciously aware of those decisions. This fits in perfectly with the debate occurring there.

Thank you so much for this. I have been curious about this technique since I heard about it. I am grateful for this clear explanation, which seems just enough to get started. You had my full attention when I checked the L1 periods against my own chronology. In all of my years of practicing astrology, I have never seen a timing technique that worked this well “right out of the box,” as it were. I had a thought when you were talking about the Part of Fortune pertaining to those whose work is physical and the Part of Spirit pertaining to those whose work is intellectual. I wonder if it has more to do with social class than the physical/mental division. This is not so much the case today, but historically, those who did physical work usually were usually in the lower classes and those who did mental work were in the higher classes. In modern times, there is much more social mobility and, at least theoretically, more widespread freedom of action. Historically, though, people in higher classes tended to have more freedom of action than those in lower classes. Anyways, that is just an idea.

When you talk about the loosening of the bond at the 17 year mark my mouth dropped a bit because when my L3 moved into Cancer my loosening of the bond was activated and I became a mother for the first time. That was by far the biggest moment of my life so far and that was in counting from my Lot of Spirit. Getting pregnant in high school and raising my daughter (she’s almost 11) drastically changed the trajectory of my life and my plans. It’s interesting also that in June my 5th house profection year was activated and I have been really considering getting pregnant with my second child. Listening to the Sagittarius rising 2020 horoscope (my partner is also Sag rising) we both were pretty stunned. After the eclipse season in June it’s looking like a long stint of health related matters will be one of our primary focus points. Both of us have Aries in the 5th house of children and creativity. Then again.. we may just delve into creative new ways to get busy intimately 😅

Long comment: Didn’t finish perusal it yet but thought I should comment, I was the one that asked if a Fortune 10th peak period was immediately noticeable and said it was my case and I haven’t noticed much, thank you for answering that! But I’m one of those people who have a really terrible sense of time, dates and important events. Astrology in general and this episode motivated me to try to reconstitute my chronology and examine it from an astrological standpoint. This is obviously a hard and long task, even if I’m in my early 20’s, but anyway, I remembered that on the first or couple first L2 periods into my fortune 10th L1 I got an internship (I never worked or had an internship before) in the prosecution office and there I filled a complaint (I don’t know Law terms in English, I hope this makes sense) for a large case, the oldest there was in the office, it took me many months and it was a great piece, it became news in some websites, and I was very proud, thinking back, that has to be the most important thing I ever done! And I of course contributed some more while I was still there. Right now I’m writing a thesis that kind of ties somewhat to that case I filled a complaint for, and since I’m in a peak period now I’m wondering if I should pursue to publish it haha. And in this beginning of the L1 period was when I was more formally introduced to astrology and have been studying since then! I’m kind of shook by this, and you said Chris, that you were in a peak period when you stared studying astrology.

Thank you for this. From what I know, actually hellensic Astrologers took the timing techniques from Vedic – Dashas and Vimshottari when the romans started trading with India. So from that point of view a whole lot of Western techniques were borrowed from Vedic Astrology. A point worth noting also is that Astrology was always taught by Gurus and encouraged as part of Sanatana Dharma (eternal and ultimate truth), unlike its condemnation by the church.
I have looked up the Lot of Fortune releasing for my mother, aunts and a few celebrities who have children.. And what I noticed is that they literally were in either a preparatory period or a peak period when they either conceived or gave birth. My mother entered her L3 peak period (the finish of a L2 preparatory period) right one day before I was born. And she entered a L2 peak period the same date my sibling was born. The same insight was in the charts of other women! It’s such a cool thing! I must say that L1 period doesn’t matter as much to indicate children or not, but a solid combination of a L2 and L3 period definitely does. And a cool thing is that all these women had something or the other to do with their 5th house from Fortune. Absolutely amazing!

This is the first time I’ve learned about ZR. I have checked my own chart and my two now adult kids as well, and is astonished of the accuracy of timing. Since I’m a PhD and career counselor I’m actually a bit stirred up about what this can mean professionally. I have a question about my own chart though. In May 2019 I will arrive to the period (cap-cap) that were skipped in 2011 at my first LB from Lot of Spirit. In the profection chart for April-May 2019 every planet will make a trine to its natal place. Q: Does anyone know what this – i.e. profection arc 120 degrees in an completion period after LB – may imply?
This is my experience as well. I have a night chart with Saturn exalted in Libra as my chart ruler opposite Venus in detriment in Aries, and it’s always a mixed bag in terms of “good” and “bad” things happening in my life to the point where it’s hard to define which is which. (And to complicate matters further, Saturn is Rx exactly conjunct Jupiter Rx in the 9th, and Venus is conjunct my Sun and Mars in Aries.) 3:09:15

It took a couple of sessions, but I listened to the whole thing, thank you both so much ! I hope I will be able to listen twice, actually. This technique is gradually becoming clearer for me. It takes a while to absorb it. Something kind of amusing that occurred to me later —- my Part Of Spirit is Leo and my dad used to call me “Tiger” when I was little. My husband’s is Libra and not only was he frequently (an adorable) ring bearer at weddings as a small child but his mom included “Cupid” as a made up middle name for him back then. Anybody else have a story ?
Inherent in questions of fate vs free will is the question of who “I” even am. If my soul decided something before I was born, does that mean I don’t have a choice? Or that I already made that choice? I’m also Earth, and I’m also the solar system, and I’m also the galaxy, and I’m also the Universe, and I’m also God, and I’m also the Great Mother… So I’m sure I’m deciding EVERYTHING, on some level… It just depends how wide my scope of consciousness is. There are relatively distinct and certainly autonomous subpersonalities within each of us (yes, they’re represented as planets and asteroids and whatnot in our charts) who would say they have no choice about things I do, but they certainly are parts of me! Setting all of that aside, just because something big is going to happen at a time doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be a really exact thing. There’s hypothetically a very wide range of possible expressions of any and all things in astrology, even things that appear to happen out of the blue and entirely out of our control. Last year’s Nobel Prize in physics went to a team that proved that the Universe isn’t locally real. Quantum entanglement and quantum teleportation are real. Objects don’t necessarily have set physical properties until we observe them. This is what the most recent scientific advances are saying. This being the case, I think it’s entirely reasonable to hypothesize that we may have SOME manner of influence over things that happens in indirect or not readily measurable ways.

I am studying a course on Hellenistic astrology from Adam Elenbaas and I have been reading your book as he recommends it for text reading. It has proven to be very helpful and informative. So I compared the lot of Eros as per your calculation versus the calculation on Astro.com. And the astro.com calculation has proven to be more accurate in my case pertaining to specific events in relationships. Is this something that you have come across before in you client work sometimes?
Just starting this and I’m only 20 minutes in, but I have a very sincere request and observation. You said you studied certain people’s charts and then listed them. They are ALL MALE. Does this matter? Yes!! I’m terms of looking at charts of people you don’t intimately know you’re almost entirely looking at career. Habitually women have been excluded from career and therefore the phases of our lives are defined almost entirely by home and relationships. How do we see our phases when the only people you give examples for are males?! I ran into this with lunar progressions as well. Your article with Kelly Sertees. She mentioned once that women tend to have their babies during their full moon phase. ONCE it was mentioned, and very briefly! Otherwise almost all of your timing examples deal with males and careers. It’s incredibly frustrating. I’d love to hear what you have to say about using the vertex. Would you consider making an in-depth article about what the vertex is, how to use it, and what it can reveal? I had a moment of absolute astonishment when I saw the accuracy of significant points marked by peak periods. Now I understand what you two meant by having a sort-of personal crisis in regards to what is predestined upon the moment of birth. The only way I can begin to wrap my head around the idea that perhaps most (if not all) of the narrative of my life story has been predetermined at the moment of birth is to consider the theory that time and space is non existent outside of the human perception of dimensional reality and maybe free will vs destiny are conceptually impossibly complex to understand from the human perspective. I found myself equally as fascinated reading the bible prior to gaining an intermediate/advanced understanding of astrology; as I found the entire bible is encoded with astrology and astrological notations. If you havn’t already, I highly recommend reading the bible, and if you find yourself as blown away as I was at the astrological references and meanings, please get ahold of me if you’d like to have a conversation about it. I’ll share this story since I mentioned it in comments: the synchronicity where I didn’t want to actually study Jupiter only to hours later run into coworkers looking at Jupiter through a telescope. I still have the pic of Jupiter by the moon by Saturn. If I got it right, lot of fortune in pisces, spirit in aries. The date on that was around June 28, 2021. Lot of spirt moved from gemini to cancer Jan 3rd of that year so the relevant lots are all along that transit which was actually a nasty intro. Gemini being apparently a peak, I can say I have no idea to even start with that so I’ll just say it’s gemini and all over the map. I often state chapters with Pluto and it actually syncs with Pluto transits where (if there’s a point to actually looking at Jupiter) it’s more defined all in that 2001 – 2021 period will collect to actually go towards something. So, in an 8th house profection (aries) year which hasn’t been fun followed by a 9th, 10th, 11th (cancer with Jupiter with LoS ..) hmm… level 2 in the 11th profection looks like virgo. I’m not big on predictions, I do like hindsight. A way I look at “free will” is many forked roads. Same outcomes, different possible variations?

Woohoo I just began my second lot of fortune peak in cancer at 42 years old and at 52 a double lot of fortune and spirit peak and at 56 years old til I’m 66 a triple lot of fortune, spirit and Eros. 28:00 : I have an explanation for free-will vs predetermined. They are both true. it depends on what you know, and how you got that knowledge. These days we learn from books and courses. It is knowledge someone else gathered. You can grasp knowledge you are being thought because you can analyse and understand. But understanding ‘the wheel’ and how it functions, is not the same as inventing it. Why did the ancients have this feeling to look up to be able to understand themselves? What was obvious then, that isn’t anymore? I believe astrology is like mathematics of energies that surround you. You could calculate any influence you get. It would turn you into a mathematical formula, being a victim of some divine designer without free will. But when you are part of this whirlpool of energies, the thought of you being a victim without free will, also changes who you are. And you are adding that thought energy to the whirlpool. These days a lot of negative thoughts, are creating a new reality. Thoughts of being victims and prisoners, transform our reality, in physical energy. So in free will we create a new universe. Because we don’t like having no free will. We change the stars, we change everything, with our hearts and our free will. Ome day we will all remember who we are. One day we will all remember why we had to forget. There is a divine logic to ‘things’ and there is free will. It’s all up to you to create whatever you want.
Love your content! Quick but important question, does one’s Lit of Fortune, Spirit, Eros, change in ones chart based on astrocartography calculations as one moves around the globe? When reading my zodiacal releasing, I don’t know whether to follow the reading from the original place of my birth, or to recalculate my chart based on where I’m living currently. This question in my brain, currently has me stumped on how to proceed with my own reading . . .
I feel scared (and depressed after perusal this article). My lot of Fortune is in Leo. Biggest malefic Mars in Taurus (10th from LOF – bummer) in opposition to the other malefic, Saturn in Scorpio. I will be entering a 15 year old Scorpio period on Level 1 in 2029. I already had enough hard times in my life with a Sun opposite Pluto conj Saturn and Mars opposite Saturn conj Pluto…..I don’t want more….😭
My Lot of Spirit is of most interest to me atm. I feel like there’s a lot of question marks and growing momentum in relation to career/creative pursuits. Was cool to see I’m currently in an L1 peak period until the end of 2024 (7th house from Fortune), as well as an L2 peak period (1st house), and in 3 months will also be in an L3 peak period (10th house) !! Will be intriguing to see how this plays out.
I think just like Hellenistic astrology, or traditional astrology gives you the nuts and bolts of what astrology really is, concepts like free will or angels have been confused and badly translated or interpreted from its Hebrew and Judaic origins to Christianity, Catholicism, etc. So we need to go back to these sources to understand them, so as I studied in Kabbalah, free will is not the choices you make in everyday life like what shoes do I wear? What do I study? Etc. These choices are rarely available to us, starting from the country we were born in, the family we are born into, who is our parents and siblings, etc. These determinations have limit the range of our decisions starting day 1. So it’s not really free will what will I study if I was born in a country that don´t allow women to study in the first place, to give an example. So, according to Kabbalistic studies, free will is not what choices to make on the outside world, on the tangible (although it can be too) but mainly it is what person do I chose to be with the external circumstances that present in life. Do I victimize myself, do I take control, do I lay back, am I proactive, externally I can be a musician, CEO, CFO, writer, who cares, the point is what kind of person I choose to be, given the circumstances I’m given. So in this case these timing techniques are not against the concept of free will, we are destined to meet people, to live certain circumstances, is what do we do when they present themselves to us, and I believe, that’s more accurate than believing we “got full control” over our lives.

I have been checking out ZR from Spirit and Eros for family and friends. One friend has Eros in Libra, but on the Astro Seek ZR calculator, the calculations for the lot begin in Pisces. It states that Eros is in Libra, and lists Libra, Scorpio, Sag, Cap and Aquarius as L1/L2 – but greyed out, with no levels and dates shown: instead the ZR begins from the DOB in Pisces. I’m confused because I cannot think of any rationale for this, and it only occurs for this one person (from amongst the people I’ve been testing the technique on). I haven’t yet had the opportunity to take your course on ZR although I plan to, and am working my way through your book. Perhaps there is a reason for this seemingly random sign jump covered in the course, but a brief explanation of why this has occurred would be greatly appreciated.
I was really fascinated by this technique and was going along with the article through my own chart and was really discouraged after seeing that if I change my time of birth (which I’m not sure of 100% to the second) only 1/2 minutes ALL the lots change signs 😩 and what made me question my time of birth is actually the fact that SR wasn’t giving me any particular feedback I was born at sunrise with tight conjunction of Sun/Asc and the calculations are different for night/day charts.. not really sure what to do 🤷♀️ I’m grateful for the article anyway, I love learning this stuff 🧙😍
I revisited this because (it’s a mix) the recent transit episode and I actually LOOKED at the past zodiacal releases, at least with spirit. That was interesting, it’s weird I didn’t look back that much. I don’t have much in terms of conflict related to free will and determinism. It’s definitely something to think about related to it. That may actually be the specific lens I’m looking for though. Previous comment with transits, the lockdown period is when I found myself discussing astrology because I was tinkering with it while also explaining it to others where I noticed I tend to be far too open minded in some ways in terms of explaining different methods where.. it’s saying a lot while not saying anything where I also didn’t have an opinion myself. I probably didn’t look much at the past releases much because this is actually a good time to actually do so. If anyone brings up 9/11 I say it has a complete different meaning to be because it kicked off a rough period of time so I wasn’t surprised to see there was a hard shift in zodiacal releases in, I think April, of 2001. I had a very sudden mood shift. Peak period gemini so.. mars 2nd, Venus, 2nd, to Mercury 12th which (if you looked at a natal chart) there’s almost like 2 sides, one harmonic and the other rough aspects. I remember the Venus shift even though the prior mars is in conjunction. Plus there’s likely a slower glide into what’s a much more positive cancer period. What’s cool is.. the “peak period” was rough, but I always felt that it would eventually apply to something much more useful lately.

really interesting because I was question my self the question: How can I understand immediately life of a person just by looing at his/her birth chart? We have dasa system in idia astrology and purple star astrology (which I am researching). Morden astrology great at describe a person psychology, but somehow lacking of a general view on human life. seems to me the more i reflect on my astrology ; its a way to balance .. which is essentially a movement of tension and release. … also an introduction to “sorcery’ which is the way the mind is used to “change outside events through spells” contrasted with mysticism (a simple observing without “trying to change outside events”) I don’t know there seems to be the two sides of the mind when life shows the limits of sorcery and tells us to simply get our view straight on things, not always having to reform/change everything, change everything from what exactly? as if life was a complete f^ up …
So I don’t understand. You start with marking out angular houses to the lot of fortune for peak periods. You count years going from the lot of spirit to those angular houses to find peak points, you can do level 1: ie; aquarius is 30 years and sub level 2 30 months ect ect until the years are up and then it goes to the next sign in succession and starts over from that point. Then the preceding house is the initiation into that peak period, then the peak period is the next house and then the house after that is when things tie up… But when you are reading famous charts you have the entire zodiacal signs amount of years in the first house, then the next zodiacal signs years, and then the next phase…. Am I missing something, because I thought you canted around each house from the first sign, counting each sign in progression as a year (or 360 day year) and then when the amount of years is added up (or used up) then onto the next phase of life according to the next sign. Why do you have all the years in one sign (the lot of fortunes house), and then the stacked up years into the next house and then the 3rd?
Getting to the loosing of the bond section made a lot of sense for me and I can expect to keep having upheavals/upward mobility. All of my parts go through 3 or 4 of Gemini-Cancer-Leo-Virgo, so I’ll have 3 or 4 loosings in each part if I live past my 80’s. I also have a very tight Venus-Saturn opposition in my night chart, so they both get activated really often at the same periods of my life and don’t always play very nicely. 🙃
Awesome article—-I want to learn more. I’m hoping maybe you can give me a little insight on a discrepancy of houses in 1. Whole sign house, 2. Placidus. I was born in 66’ so Uranus & Pluto are exactly conjunct at 15 degrees of Virgo. The whole sign chart shows them to be in the 4th house, and Placidus puts them in the 5th house. HUGE discrepancy..how can both be accurate?
I have a day chart with Jupiter, part of fortune, and part of spirit in Aries. In my natal, I have sun, mercury, venus and Midheaven in Cancer. I am in a Cancer level one, Virgo level two, Capricorn level 3, and on March 26th I will have a level 4 loosing of the bonds in Cancer for two days. Hoping for a positive couple days. I have had a level 2 loosing of the bonds already, but I can’t really attribute that to anything in particular. I have another coming up in 20 years, we shall see.
So, my 3th house aquarius, which is where my Saturn is in the 1st degree will be activated on Dec 1st on the 3rd level right on time for Saturn to reenter Aquarius on my Saturn Return and make the great conjunction 1 degree apart from my natal Saturn. Also, 6th house activated on 1st level and also activated by it being my 29th year on this planet. Considering I have a night chart, I am quite scared right now lol I had already a very negative event happening this year relating to the 6th house, I want no more of it.
At first I panicked perusal this. My Lot of fortune is in Libra and my Lot of Spirit was in Capricorn meaning my first 27 years were my peak period. “Oh WTF did I fuck that up, was that my prime?!” then I go to the next stage and see about Triads and I’m like…. Ah nah it’s fine! My peak period I spent in call centres really building myself up that corporate ladder only for the last year of the Peak period for me to realise that I hated it and going into self employment and I guess my 30 years succedant is me just living for myself…. hopefully
I wonder how does that coincide with the ascendant triplicity rulers technique, dividing the life of the native into thirds? For example, I was told by an astrologer that my last third of life is supposed to be my best (ruled by an exalted Mars in Capricorn in the 5th, night birth), but none of the peak periods seems to fall within that range. PS. The only funny/significant thing I noticed, that the simultaneous release from Lot of Eros and lot of Fortune in late May 1992 coincided with losing my virginity. Nothing meaningful afterwards, I guess )
Question about pregnancy/childbirth – would that be lot of fortune given the health implications and the fact that it is sometimes accidental and “befalls” you? Or would it be spirit as it may relate to life path (in a different context from career) aa a significant planned event in someone’s life? And would you look at one or the other depending on whether you were the father or the mother, as the father’s health is not impacted by the pregnancy/birthing process?
Hello friends! I have a twilight chart where my sun is just below the horizon, and it definitely behaves more like a day chart. I haven’t been able to find a way to change which formula Solar Fire, Astro.com or Astro-Seek use when calculating my lots – they are all defaulting to the Night Formula. Does anyone have any tips or do I need to just suck it up and go full manual in these situations? Many thanks in advance!
for me cardinal feels neutral and builds up, fix feels bad and is active / peak, mutable feels good and builds down. for my older daughter fix builds up and feels neutral, mutable feels bad and is peak and cardinal feels good and is building down. So we both feel good in building down and bad when at peak. but my little daughter feels bad when building up in fix, feels good and is at peak in mutable and feels neutral in cardinal… when building down. wow.
I have a loosing of the bond happening May 22, 2023 with a lot of fortune. Could that mean I have a baby? I know it could mean soooo many things but I am 35 and have 2 kids (will be 16 and 18 at that time)… so having another baby at 36 would be very crazy. If both the sect benefic and malefic are aspecting the sign in question, do you consider dignity of those planets and what effects take place first, the benefic or malefic or combination? Also, I don’t know if you answer this question in the 18hr class but it seems inevitable to consider the lord of the sign and maybe even the relationship of the lord to the aspecting planet (malefic or benefic). Can you please comment on it?
The lengths for each sign seem so arbitrary. They are all about the planet in relation to earths orbit, which makes Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn look solid but with the others this method seems to fall apart. Wouldn’t it also be better for them to be more exact since they even deal with days in the end. Does anyone have a good rational for this? I think it’s important that you draw a line at health predictions, because of the placebo and nocebo effects. Imagine telling someone it’s their fate to have a health problem at a particular point and their bodies create that situation just because they believed it. So, in a way, the fate part of that prediction would have been directly correlated with the reading, and not necessarily with a health issue that was supposed to afflict that client in any way.
