What Do Astrological Karakas Mean?

In Vedic Astrology, there are three categories of karakas: “one who causes” (karaka 20), “one who causes an event”, and “chara karakas”. Karakas are specific planets assigned to an individual’s birth chart, with Jupiter being the most significant for expansion, wisdom, and understanding. They represent abundance, growth, and a broader understanding of life.

In Jaimini School of Astrology, the secrets about various factors of life are easily studied through Karakas. One of the fundamental concepts in this mystical tradition is the Chara Karakas, a set of eight significant markers that unveil the mysteries of our existence. Karakas are the “significators” that determine on which person or thing a planet has influence. The most important of these karakas is the Atmakaraka, significator of the soul, which rules the person who is the subject of the horoscope.

There are three kinds of Karakas in Astrology: Creation, Sustenance, and Destruction. Rahu and Ketu are determined according to the intersection of the sun and moon’s paths in the sky. Karakas refer to significators or indicators of various aspects of life, such as Venus being the natural karaka for marriage and Mars being the karaka for brothers.

In Jaimini astrology, the placement of planets in specific signs and houses is the root of astrological readings. Astrologers study the placement of planets in specific signs and houses to paint a picture of the native’s life and destiny. By understanding these eight significant markers, astrologists can better understand the mysteries of human life and destiny.

Is the Karaka system 7 or 8?

Rahu is considered a karka for pitris and ancestors in the eight char karaka scheme, which is a pitri karaka. People with ancestors use the eight char karakas, while those without knowledge use the seven char karakas. The debate on the 8th char karaka focuses on Pitri karaka, as 99 people on earth are likely to be aware of Pitri karaka. Therefore, Rahu can become any temporary significator or karaka in the chart.

Which Karaka is for wealth?

Dhana yogas are astrological combinations or yogas for wealth and prosperity, which are more fruitful if both the lagna and its lord are strong and there are no Arista yogas present. Jupiter is one of the natural Dhana-karakas, providing lifelong prosperity and financial stability. According to the Parasari School of Hindu astrology, the lord of the 2nd house or bhava, counted from the lagna (birth ascendant), and the 11th bhava are concerned with earning and accumulation of wealth.

The other bhavas to be reckoned with are the 5th and the 9th bhavas, known as the abodes of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. The inter-relationship of these wealth-giving bhavas and their respective lords ensures wealth and prosperity. Planets simultaneously owning two wealth-giving bhavas become the prime indicators of wealth. The strongest indicator is the one that owns both the 2nd and the 11th bhavas, followed by the ones who own the 5th or the 9th.

Dhana yogas depend on the lord of the 2nd who determines wealth, while the 11th is the house of gains. Dhana yogas arise when the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th, and 11th bhavas mutually associating, but only when the yogas happen to connect with the lagna that more significant results are seen.

How do you identify Karaka?

Karaka, also known as New Zealand laurel or kopi on the Chatham Islands, is a tree found in coastal forests of Aotearoa New Zealand. It can grow up to 15m tall with a wide canopy and trunks up to 60cm in diameter. The bark of karaka trees is split into distinct segments, and it is recognizable for its large, shiny, smooth, dark green leaves. Karaka trees also grow small white flowers and orange fruit, which is easily identifiable.

Karaka trees fruit in summer and autumn, with oval-shaped oval-shaped fruits that change color from green to yellow to orange. The fruit is toxic to humans and animals due to the toxin karakin, found in the kernel. The flesh of the fruit can be eaten, and the kernels were also eaten by Māori with special preparation methods to remove the toxin. The fruit is naturally eaten by birds, especially kereru, which are important seed dispersers for karaka.

Karaka is a significant plant to Māori, having been planted throughout the country for food and medicine. The preparation of karaka fruit for eating is an important cultural practice that continues today.

What planet is for money?

Astrology can help predict an individual’s susceptibility to attract and retain money. Factors such as a strongly placed Jupiter in a birth chart, which is associated with expansion, growth, abundance, and luck, can indicate potential for financial prosperity and good fortune. Additionally, certain favorable houses in a birth chart, such as the second house, sixth house, tenth house, eleventh house, ninth house, fifth house, and eighth house, are associated with financial matters.

However, some individuals may not have favorable birth charts. To attract money, some astrologists suggest several remedies. First, offer water to the Sun by rising early and filling a copper vessel with water, chanting the mantra. This ritual is believed to invite good fortune, enhance financial stability, and attract prosperity into one’s life.

Second, wear a silver ring on one’s right-hand finger to promote financial well-being and stability. This practice is believed to attract wealth and prosperity into one’s life. Finally, donate food to those in need, as it can help remove financial obstacles and usher in good fortune, prosperity, and financial stability.

What are the Karakas of each house?

In Hindu astrology, Karaka refers to the significator of a particular event or thing, which is ruled by a Karaka-graha, a planet specific to that house and significance. The Karaka’s favorable or unfavorable situation gives favourable or unfavorable results signified by it and the bhava and the bhava-lord. The effects of planets as Karakas (functional benefics) or Akarakas (functional malefics) or Marakas (death-inflicting) are related to the Rasis or signs.

Each bhava has one or more Karakas or significators, but it is bad for the bhava-lord or the bhava-karaka to occupy an evil trikasthana – the 6th, 8th, or 12th from the lagna or from the concerned bhava. The Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Moon, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus are the Bhava-karakas.

The Yoga-karaka is the planet that rules a Kendra (Angular house) and a Trikona (Trine) simultaneously. Saturn is the yoga-karaka for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius sign. The Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter do not attain this status, which the two Lunar Nodes can if they are aspected or associated with the lord of a kendra or a trikona.

Kalyan Verma states that the planet at the time of birth occupying its own sign, moolatrikona-rasi (exaltation sign) in a kendra from the lagna becomes a yoga-karaka. The planet situated in its exaltation sign, friendly sign, and in its own navamsa becomes special Raja yoga-karakas.

Atmakaraka (AK) is the highest degree, representing the native’s soul and considered the king. The other eight are Amatyakaraka, Bhratri Karaka, Matrikaraka, Pitrikaraka, Putrakaraka, Gnatikaraka, and Darakaraka. Each planet has traversed different degrees in the signs, from highest to lowest in descending order. To measure the distance a planet has crossed in a sign, we reduce its degrees from 30° to find its progressed distance.

Karakas, a powerful Legendary Land in Magic, is banned due to its ability to protect, retrigger, and control Commander creatures. The lore behind Karakas reveals a city of great trade and prosperity, with ties to Dominaria and Angus MacKenzie. Magic: The Gathering is filled with powerful cards that are often on the ban list, a collection of cards that Wizards of the Coast consider too good to be allowed in most decks. • I didn’t ask a single line question, someone else did and you answered it. Astrology is otherworldly and complex. I have many aspects/yogas that go against ‘interpretation’. A Saturn debilitated and combust, yet I get almost ‘magical’ good results from it. I experientially have the results of the Mahabhagya yoga(aries-sun, leo-moon)…except I’m a woman. I have many more examples. Maybe something to do w/ being western native opposed to eastern native…interpretation is different(?).

  • Question? am trying to make a horoscope for my granddaughter, I have made a chart (South India) with her ascendant in Leo also have placed the House rulers according to each sign, but before I continue I have problems to understand The House of Karakas, My question is in order to read the house of karakas the karakas first house/ascendant starts in Aries or starts in her ascendant who is in leo, once this obstacle is removed I will continue with Retrograds and Aspects, Thank You.

  • I don’t think this is always the case. When Saturn transited my Jupiter in 4th/Virgo house I received huge financial gain…huge…alot of money. Jupiter sits w/ Ketu therefore aspected by Rahu and exalted Venus in Pisces/10th. My Saturn is in Aries/11th w/ exalted Sun. These rules are not always working for my chart….just sayin.

  • As far as I know in Kerala months are named based on in which zodiac sign sun is placed, and accordingly movement of sun and the zodiac sign are in same direction. However in your explanation you illustarted it as sun moves in one direction and zodiac signs are counted in the opposite direction. Why is it so..? Is there any difference between vedic astrogy calculation in western countries and India? Kindly clarify

  • I’m sorry your perception is that your being challenged. My comment above was in response to…”If Jupiter is aspected by Saturn/Rahu does it weaken Jupiter?” you said Yes. My chart clearly proves otherwise. If your confident in yourself and your interpretations then any question or comment will not offend you. This has nothing to with my knowledge, or lack there of. I’m not making the interpretations…only responding to yours.
