What Does An Astrological Decanate Mean?

A decan is a subdivision of a zodiac sign used to provide a deeper understanding of each sign’s personalities and traits. In ancient astrology, each sign was subdivided into periods of approximately ten degrees. Each zodiac sign can be divided into three equal segments of 10 degrees each, known as decans or decanates.

Aries Decans, for example, is the first decan of the zodiac, which is from 0-9 degrees 59 minutes. The second decan is from 10 degrees. Each zodiac sign has three decans, providing a deeper insight into its astrological traits.

Decans are subdivisions of 10-degree increments per sign, which is 30 degrees. Each decan has a planetary ruler, which is assigned to each decan. Each sign is allocated a triplicity consisting of three of the four classical elements: air, water, earth, or fire. These elements are subdivided into three equal parts of 10 degrees each, known as decans or decanates.

The meaning of DECAN is any of the three divisions of 10 degrees in each sign of the zodiac, also known as the ruler of such a division. Decans are 36 groups of stars used in ancient Egyptian astronomy to divide the 360-degree ecliptic into 36 parts.

In astrology, decans refer to the subdivisions within each zodiac sign, broken up by degrees. On the zodiac wheel, there are 360 degrees that can be divided into three decans, each with a different decan.

How important are decans in astrology?

Modern astrology updates rulerships, with decans or “faces” being the least important dignity. In medieval astrology, decans represented about one-fifteenth of a planet’s overall strength. Modern Western astrology assigns decans and their rulers based on concepts like Ptolemy, Lilly, and Jones. The decans and their rulers are assigned based on the planet’s overall strength and the planet’s position in the solar system.

What is the description of decans?

Deacon is a member of the lowest rank of the threefold Christian ministry, below the presbyter-priest and bishop. In Protestant churches, deacons are usually lay officials who share in the ministry and governance of a congregation. In early Christian churches, deacons were a basic but subservient ministerial order responsible for practical and charitable functions. In Orthodox, Anglican, and Roman Catholic churches, the diaconate lost its original independent status and became a transitional probationership for ordination to the priesthood.

Interest in the permanent diaconate revived in the Roman Catholic church in the 20th century, with Pope Pius XII referring to the possibility of an independent lay order of the diaconate in 1957. The second Vatican Council restored the permanent diaconate to alleviate priest shortages and reinforce the traditional threefold hierarchy of orders. Permanent deacons exercise various responsibilities in parishes and dioceses, including administering the sacrament of Baptism, distributing elements at Eucharist, preaching, blessing marriages, and officiating at funerals and burial services.

Deaconesses, women known as “charged” rather than ordained, performed functions similar to deacons until the 11th century. The office was more common in Eastern churches than in the West until the 19th century and the birth of the modern deaconess movement. Deaconesses exist in many Protestant denominations, including Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Baptist churches. The Church of England first ordained women as deacons in 1987.

The zodiac sign of a person is determined by their birth date and the constellation they were born in. The first sign is Double Sagittarius, which is ruled by Jupiter. The second sign is associated with Arians, ruled by Mars, and the third sign is linked to Leo, ruled by the Sun. Sagittarians are known for their alertness, intelligence, knowledge, open-mindedness, optimism, outdoorsyness, philosophy, curiosity, and restlessness. To determine your zodiac sign, check your year of birth and the time the Sun moved signs on the same date.

What do you mean by decan?

The Deccan, located in the southern peninsula of India, is characterized by a high triangular tableland and is bounded by the Ghats on the east and west. Its average elevation is about 2, 000 feet, and its principal rivers are the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri (Cauvery). The plateau’s early history is unclear, but it has been the site of conflict between lowland rulers and the Muslim Delhi sultanate.

The Chalukya, Rastrakuta, Later Chalukya, Hoysala, and Yadava families established regional kingdoms in the Deccan from the 6th to the 13th century. However, these kingdoms were constantly in conflict with neighboring states and feudatories. The Muslim Bahmanī dynasty established an independent kingdom in 1347, and the five Muslim states that succeeded the Bahmanī joined forces in 1565 at the Battle of Talikota to defeat the Hindu empire.

During the Mughal decline in the 18th century, the Marathas, the nizam of Hyderabad, and the Arcot nawab vied for control of the Deccan. Their rivalries and conflicts over succession led to the gradual absorption of the Deccan by the British. When India became independent in 1947, the princely state of Hyderabad initially resisted but joined the Indian union in 1948.

What is the meaning of the word decanate?

In astrology, a decanate is one of three parts into which each zodiac sign is divided. It is derived from the Latin word “decan,” which means “ten.” The term has been in use since the 17th century. In 1852, William Lilly published An Introduction to Astrology, on page 70, where he states that if any planet is in its decanate or face, it has the least possible essential dignity.

What are the 36 deacons in astrology?

The Egyptian calendar consisted of 36 decans, which were added five days to create a solar-based year. Decans measure sidereal time, while the solar year is six hours longer. The Sothic and solar years in the Egyptian calendar realign every 1460 years. Decans represented on coffins from later dynasties show the Sothic-solar shift. The locations of decanal stars and their relationships to modern star names and constellations are unknown due to uncertainty surrounding observation methods and criteria used to select decans.

These predictable heliacal re-appearances were used by the Egyptians to mark the divisions of their annual solar calendar, such as the heliacal rising of Sirius, which signified the annual flooding of the Nile.

What are the decanates in Vedic astrology?

A decanate, or Drekkana in Sanskrit, is a third of a house and represents the ascending degree of a sign. Each sign has three decanates, totaling 36. The first decanate is ruled by the planet, followed by the fifth, sixth, and ninth lords. For example, the first decanate of Aries is ruled by Mars, the second by the Sun, and the third by Jupiter. The first decanate of Aries is a dark-skinned man with a white cloth around his waist, a liberal-minded person ready to protect, and a lifted axe. This is a human decanate and an armed decanate. These symbolic representations are closely related to one’s fate.

What is a decan in astronomy?

The decans, 36 star configurations that encircle the southern sky and lie beyond the ecliptic, represent a second set of astronomical reference systems that emerged independently in the early antiquity period. Collectively, these systems constitute a distinctive astronomical map.

How do I find my decan in astrology?

Decans are subdivisions of 10-degree increments per sign, with each sign occupying 30 degrees of the Zodiac. Each decan is where your birthday falls within that 30-degree spread. The first ten days of your sign are the first decan, the second ten days are the second decan, and the third ten days are the third decan. Each decan has a unique footprint, with planetary sub-rulers assigned to the sign, providing additional layers of symbolism to apply to your birth date within your sign.

These sub-rulers, like the chart rulers, can be considered the “flavor” of each decan, as they determine the cosmic energies of the degree of that sign. Understanding decans in astrology can help you understand your personality and what it says about you.

  • Depending on the cusp, it can actually be a very good thing. For instance, those born on the Libra/Scorpio cusp have a desire for peace/justice/balance due to the Libra influence, and the analytical ability/understanding to carry that desire out due to the Scorpio side. Basically, being born on certain cusps can make you intelligent in both sides of your brain.

  • Thankkk you,I’ve went back and forth with some astrologers on this,as someone on a cusp who has had close relationships with other people on a cusp I’ve really started to believe in cusps, and don’t understand the argument of “your sun can’t be in two places at once’s” argument, the University is vast and I see cusp astrology just explaining traits of people on certain degrees when the sun is going through a transitional period

  • Hey I was born on the 19th of Feb ! Only know 1 other person born on that day. Well, now 2 . Zero degree of Pisces. I have Virgo rising, Pluto, Uranus, Mars, opposite sun and Saturn. So, does alot of opposition’s mean I’m a hard case? Lol I also have Neptune in Scorpio opposite jupitar in Taurus. And of course North and South nodes Gemini/Sag.

  • I was born on oct. 24th 1992 at 8:02 am in Miami, Fl. In my chart I have both my rising sign and sun sign in scorpio, with moon in libra. And conflicting jupiter and venus lol. But with moon and libra id say im as close to a cuspie as it can get really get. I feel like the cusps, even as a generalization, should exist for those like me who dont fully relate to one sign or another. I dont see myself as emotional as a “true” sun in scorpio or as airheaded as a libra, but a balance. A potentially good or bad balance lol. Of course, when you get further into astrology and find out your chart and other things, everyone is technically a ‘cuspie’ due to the many differing signs affecting their chart. Which is why I can understand confusion around the term. And honestly people that think they know everyone just from their sign or even their birth charts entirely, is a fool. You also have to bring psychology into the equasion and understand that astrology tries to generalize people, almost another way to stereotype, and that the human personality is simply too broad to be generalized as so. And that there are many aspects that affect personality such as a person’s heritage (both of my parents are from Puerto Rico, so I’ve had a very hispanic youth lol), environment, cultures and subcultures, whether they grew up with siblings, lack of one or both parents, and general upbringing. Even the media of this generation compared to our parents and grandparents or the older generations. I use both aspects of astrology and psychology to get to know the people around me.

  • TRUE..! The cusps are not some HARD BORDER like some people say. To say it is, is highly contradictory to the way dimensions of Life/Consciousness needs to work, in order for life to evolve from a lower to a higher dimension. We can only evolve to what is within reach of our own spirituality, and so, there is a need for a MULTITUDE of spiritual dimensions. Just look at all the different spiritual dimensions we may experience here on Earth – some are anxious or depressed – while others are happy and/or in LOVE… Which say a little about the spectrum of dimensions we may experience while here on Earth… We are of course all multidimensional beings, but the love of a depressed person will be experienced differently than that of one who is happy and in love… Because all our dimensions are layers in our subconscious, coloring off on our experience of reality… Suppression – and trying to run away from our problems, and be better than we are – is the Luciferian Rebel in us, that refuses to face his/her negative emotions. But the problems do NOT go away..! It will be stored in our subconscious energy, and will be “triggered” by experiencing things that are similar to what we are suppressing. The people we hang out with, WILL be affected by our own energies – and especially the things that we suppress. This is how the mechanism of “associations” works – and it is really noting more than a side-effect of our intuition – which is there to protect us from dangers that we are not CONSCIOUSLY aware of… And this is just the beginning. It will make you all knowing – if you want to go there – but you dont… Eating from the Tree of Knowledge only complicates what is really meant to be easy. And it makes us avoid spiritual desires and that we consciously know may create some negative “side effect”, and therefore refuse to experience… The reason for our inability to get past issues that we suppress, is that they are still there, and we need to connect with them, and GRADUALLY/NATURALLY get over them as they get healed. This helps the energies to get over into other more positive spiritual dimensions… Eventually, ones Life may evolve past its sometimes troublesome past. Facing our “demons”, are an important and natural healing process. Trying to FORCE this to occur, by trying to force oneself to be positive, will only make things worse – and eventually; these parts of our subconscious will get triggered by the slightest of touch/similarities – and make us OVER-REACT, because they have gotten worse and worse, for every time we try to suppress them..! It is what gives the condition with “ticks” and “Tourettes syndrome”. Facing our demons, is somehow related to forgiveness, which is also very important in order to experience Heaven on Earth. Without TRUE/HONEST forgiveness, we will be stuck in our anger… Just saying that one forgive someone, is not the same as honestly forgiving someone. But eventually, life will find a way so that we WILL forgive that person… Either in this life, or in another… Just realize that everyones Karma makes them do things that they really have no conscious control over – and the people who do the worst crimes, are the people who have tried to suppress themselves for the longest, and eventually they could not keep this “Pandoras box” shut anymore, and what came out, was plenty more than what they knew was in there… Some people seem like they are POSSESSED – because they are..! Only it is their own – or other peoples Karmic energies – that have grown strong enough to take over and make them do whatever they did… Ive just witnessed a case of this… It was BIZARRE to witness the behavior of this guy. I remember calling him Evil several times – and then i took a look on his astrology… Suddenly i realized that there was a reason for everything he had been doing… Life/Consciousness will not accept being suppressed forever – and no-one is really to blame, as no-one have full control over their lives… But i believe “forgiveness” is the way to stop such things from repeating itself… There IS something to the “Law of Attraction”. Consciousness IS magnetic… In the song “High Hopes”, “Pink Floyd” sings; “Beyond the horizon, of the place we lived when we were young – in a place of Magnets and Miracles”… Later in the song, he sings; “Steps taken forward, and sleepwalking back again. Dragged by the force of some inner tide”………………………. In the song “Comfortably Numb”, he sings about not suppressing things “Is there anybody out there? Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me… Is there anyone home? Come on down – i hear youre feeling down. I can ease your pain, get you on your feet agagin. Relax, i need some information first… Just the basic facts – can you show me where it hurts?”…………………. I dont think i need to explain it any further than ive done in this writing… I LOVE Pink Floyd..! And Pharell Williams, Lykke Li, Cyndi Lauper, Jamiroquai, Enigma… And MANY other musical GENIUSES, to numerous to mention. The ones mentioned is perhaps my favorite Gurus..! Anyway… Not forgiving others – or ourself – keeps us from experiencing Heaven on Earth… It is the same with desires, which are things we may have suppressed, and therefore is attracted to because of our need to experience it. People who tries to be better than they are, will never get to Heaven. We need to accept ourselves for who we TRULY are – and experience what we need to experience, in order to fill a vacuum in our spirit. Things that have been heavily suppressed, may seem like opening the “Pandoras box”, as we allow ourselves to follow these desires – but EVENTUALLY, we will get over these desires (just like music that you love, which will loose its emotional effect when you have listened to it a number of times), and it will bring us into greater balance, so we may feel and appreciate the eternal peace of the “Here and Now”, which lets you see things clearly, with only positive subconscious veils – and this state of mind/being, is Heaven. I dont think you want to remove all the veils… We are usually not ready for this experience… Its just too intense… Not that ive ever experienced it fully. Ive just seen more than i want… And it scared me away… I want the simple life from now on… No more overwhelmingly intense experiences – unless they are positive… And even then, i dont want to stay in such a state… I want peace and love. And some other “down to Earth” things 8) Getting a “little” off track here, but hopefully it was interesting/educational, and helpful to at least someone… Because of how spiritual dimensions work, Astrological energies will be mixing as SOFTLY and GRADUALLY as possible between the signs and houses. My Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto, are placed on cusps of Signs, and the interpretations for both the Signs fits my personality, and experiences. Especially Mercury and Pluto, which are closest to the cusps. Ive not yet checked the planets that are on the cusps of houses, but im sure this will be just as interesting as finding the new things about my Sign-cusps… Finally, something new to read from my Astrology <8=D

  • You know what would be really cool if you did a series of “how to get along with a sign like what are their triggers etc” I am in account managment and my customers I notice have similarities and with some ppl you really have to play mind games I would really appreaciate and love if you did this. Anyway I REALLY LOVE your articles so much I actually look forward to them all the best to you.

  • OMG, totally true! I’m a 2nd decan Libra (influences from Aquarius), & it’s totally true. I’m more ‘out-there’ & ‘peculiar’ than most Libras I’ve met. Buttt, since we have decans for our risings & moons, etc, does that mean like we should be reading like 9 horoscopes a day for each sign that influences us?

  • Do the decans only affect Sun Signs? Also it seems it would be helpful to explain that the decans go according to the element of the sign that you are speaking of IE if you are an Aries you are a fire sign so the second decan in Aries would be the next fire sign in order Leo and the third decan would be the second fire sign in order Sagittarius correct?

  • 3rd decanate cusper Scorpio =) keep’en em guessing always related and appreciated being a cusper =) I was born 3 weeks early so the doctor told my mom I was early, so i was suppose to be a Sagittarius according to the Doctor, as for Decanates, I am an Eagle I guess as Aquilla is the constellation that represents D3, and ruled by the Moon so Cancer. Depth can make things interesting. =)

  • The cusps is also your sidereal zodiac basically eastern astrology. If you aren’t aware they accepted Ophiucus the truth is they use the real size of planets, and locations of ones birth from studying and testing people natal charts. Also the dates are corrected from Aries until Pisces with Ophiucus. Why is that? Eastern astrology is basically myths and religion, Greek mythology the original circle of twelfth zodiacs is true, because they are known as the circle of animals from Greek mythology. Actually this is really good because I’m feeling connection to my sidereal zodiac. The truth about libra and Virgo if you don’t know Greek mythology well, Goddess Dike of underworld, Justice, and scales which gave the constellation of libra well prepared to be disappointed. There’s another myth which actually the truth Dike was a virgin and represents Virgo.Using Greek mythology and their Roman version like Hades is Pluto. And Mercury is Hermes. Venus is Aphrodite Greek version.

  • I’ve always wondered why I never acted or felt like a typical Virgo, and people even ask me if I’m born on the cusp. No, my birthday is August 31, but I actually (both physically and behavioral) is just like a Leo♌️! Like, how? Is it because it’s my rising sign 21°? My moon sign is Gemini btw I have a friend who’s birthday is August 25, which makes her on the cusp, does it? She doesn’t look or act hardly anything like a Leo, she’s much more quiet and reverse, but is nice and sweet, and is more like a little mouse or rat than a lion, whereas I’m definitely like the big cat, so I find it rather unfair that she can call herself one and I can’t. 😕 Sorry, just being honest astrology was difficult on me
