In astrology, the spiritual meaning of a lunar or solar eclipse is about big changes, endings, and letting go of what no longer serves you. Eclipses occur when one celestial body obscures the light from or to another celestial body, specifically the placements of the sun, Earth, and moon, which align several times a year to form both solar and lunar eclipses. The astrological significance of eclipses is like a cosmic dance, where the movements of the celestial bodies intertwine to create powerful energetic shifts.
Eclipses hold a profound impact on relationships, both romantic and non-romantic. A partial solar eclipse is a symbol of new beginnings, and it can be a direct hit if the total eclipse is in Aries (March 21 to April 19). Eclipses have been laden with significance and symbolism across cultures and belief systems for millennia, and they are considered potent moments of cosmic reset and recalibration.
The North and South Nodes are powerful placements in astrology, while the South Node corresponds with past life, spiritual baggage, and innate gifts brought into this lifetime. Lunar eclipses can be considered an activator of other transits and a moment of reflection and discovery. On the day of the eclipse, six celestial bodies will be in Aries: the sun, the moon, and the earth.
Lunar and solar eclipses are powerful tools to bring change and evolution to your life. According to astrology, eclipses bring rapid developments and encourage us to move in the best direction, both personally and collectively. If you are on the “right path”, you may experience major triumphs and victories, while if not, you may face challenges that force you to change direction for the better.

The science of an eclipse is as real as the stars in the sky. But those stars also tell another story, and that is how astrology is …
What is the significance of the eclipse?
Eclipses have been instrumental in scientific discoveries for over a century, including deciphering the Sun’s structure, finding evidence for general relativity, and discovering a new element. NASA scientists continue to study eclipses to make new discoveries about the Sun, Earth, and our space environment. Total solar eclipses are particularly important as they allow scientists to see the faint region of the Sun’s atmosphere, known as the corona, which is difficult to see with instruments like coronagraphs. Despite these efforts, the corona closest to the Sun remains a crucial area for many important processes.
What does an eclipse symbolize in love?
Eclipses are frequently regarded as emblematic of transformation, equilibrium, concord, cohesion, and introspection, which can impact our interpersonal dynamics.
What do eclipses represent in astrology?
Edut emphasizes that eclipses, both natural and astrological, are times of unexpected change. They can reveal areas of life holding onto past aspects or forcing them to go in a different direction. The total solar eclipse, a rare occurrence, is a cosmic coincidence, with the moon’s shadow masking the sun. While millions will be watching the sky, many are looking to the stars to understand its astrological significance.
What does an eclipse mean spiritually?
Lunar eclipses are considered a spiritual time in astrology, as they reveal our deep emotional tides and subconscious patterns. Astrologists believe that these eclipses are life-changing times to seek change and evolve. The energy potential of a lunar eclipse is at its peak during a total eclipse, making it an opportunity to cleanse our emotional waters and release deep-seated wounds. This period is also a time to embrace changes, as ending ties with people and things is inevitable and necessary as we grow.
Embracing changes may not be negative, as cutting off sources of negativity can help clear emotional space for new items and clearing the mind for unique opportunities. The wisdom and maturity gained in previous cycles can be anchored in a lunar eclipse, as it helps us clear our mind and embrace new opportunities. Overall, lunar eclipses are a powerful time to let go of old habits and embrace new opportunities.
Is an eclipse a good or bad omen?
The darkening of the Sun or Moon during an eclipse is a significant event in history, often seen as a disruption of the natural order. Many ancient peoples had spiritual explanations for these events to help them understand the seemingly inexplicable and random phenomena. In ancient China, it was believed that solar eclipses occurred when a celestial dragon attacked and devoured the Sun. To frighten away the dragon and save the Sun, people would bang drums and make loud noises during an eclipse. However, ancient Chinese were not particularly concerned with lunar eclipses, and one text from around 90 BCE dismisses them as “a common matter”.
In ancient Hindu mythology, a cunning demon named Rahu sought immortality by drinking the nectar of the gods. He was disguised as a woman and was discovered by Vishnu. As punishment, Rahu was beheaded, and his decapitated head darkened the Sun during an eclipse. Some versions suggest that Rahu was able to steal a sip of the nectar but was beheaded before it reached his body. His immortal head, in perpetual pursuit of the Sun, sometimes catches and swallows it, but the Sun quickly reappears.
What is the Chinese myth about eclipses?
Ancient China believed solar and lunar eclipses were heavenly signs that predicted the future of the Emperor. Solar eclipses occurred when a celestial dragon devoured the sun, while lunar eclipses were triggered by the dragon attacking the Moon. The term for eclipse was “shi”, which also means “to eat”. To frighten the dragon, the Chinese would bang drums and make loud noises during eclipses. Emperor Chung K’ang learned of an eclipse when his subjects tried to drive away the dragon. However, the Emperor’s court astronomers, Hsi and Ho, were beheaded for failing to predict the event. The Babylonian Solar Eclipse Tablet lists eclipses between 518 and 465 BC.
Does an eclipse affect your emotions?
The natural phenomenon has the potential to evoke a spectrum of emotional responses, ranging from awe to apprehension, as observed by licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Nicole Ranttila. She underscores the significance of acknowledging and accepting the unexpected responses to the unusual nature of such occurrences.
What is the omen of eclipse?
Solar eclipses are often associated with evil omens, such as death, destruction, and disasters. Pregnant women and their unborn children are often advised to stay indoors during these eclipses, while people fast in parts of India due to the belief that cooked food will be poisonous. However, not all superstitions surrounding solar eclipses are about doom. For instance, in Italy, it is believed that flowers planted during a solar eclipse are brighter and more colorful than any other time of year.
Are eclipses good omens?
In ancient Mesopotamia, eclipses were perceived as portents of misfortune. This was due to the sudden disappearance of the sun’s disk, which resulted in a sudden transition from daylight to darkness. This was the case even in the absence of advance notification, as the moon traversed the solar disk, casting a shadow over Earth. Ancient astronomers sought to provide alternative explanations for the enigmatic phenomenon of an eclipse, which was perceived as an eerie and mysterious occurrence.
What does the eclipse do to your energy?
Eclipse energy functions as a catalyst for change, facilitating the generation of productive, active, and positive energy when one consciously engages with the shadow aspects of themselves that may be revealed during this eclipse.

Nicely done. Thanks. It was clear and to the point. I’ve also notice over the years that eclipses tend to activate the house opposite as well. For example, a few years ago a nurse asked me to look at her chart in light of an upcoming solar eclipse in Cancer, which was her 4th house. She ended up quitting her job in Connecticut to move to Florida to work there in a hospital, so it activated both her 10th and 4th, even though the solar eclipse took place in her 4th.
As a Pisces eclipse baby falling on my ac/dc axis, thank you. I find that I’m only alive to experience dark parts in society and then forced into the spotlight sharing these. I laughed seeing Kansas City on the map as that’s where I live, during this eclipse is when I quit social media never planning to come back. Appreciate this
Thank you for this article! You explain it very clearly and structured and while I was aware of the astronomical placement of these occurrences I didn’t even think about them actually being a new or full moon. It feels weird I didn’t catch that before, but then I’ve only been actively studying astrology for a year now.
Awesome thorough breakdown, per usual 🙂 is there such a thing when the eclipse aspects the natal nodes? The current new moon in Scorpio is 17 degrees separating from my Libra north node in 10H placidus/11H whole.. (affecting 4H placidus/5H whole in 2 weeks) creating a grand cross involving opposing Saturns and an Aqua moon. I feel the urge to relocate out of the beautiful city but chaotic neighborhood in San Francisco. 😵💫
Hi! I just discovered your website. Interesting content. I’m finding it difficult to find any information on the impact of being born on the day of a lunar eclipse. In my case Super Blue Blood moon. Do you possibly have any particular info on that? The eclipse was at its peak when I was 3 hours old. This is what piqued my interest in astrology. My moon is in 6th house (Cancer) conjunct with the North node. The moon is the only planet by itself on that side of the chart and my sun is in 12th (Capricorn). I became deathly allergic to many things in my 20’s (now in 30’s) Allergist said its very rare – adult onset to most food – can no longer work in public as too sensitive. My chart even suggests danger portending to physical drowning/asphyxiation. Which describes Anaphylaxis (extreme allergic reaction) – I’ve experienced this 13 times and lucky to be alive – its insane. My first attack happened whilst on shift anchored away from shore in 2009 – was rushed to hospital with 40 guests onboard having a cocktail party. I’m also highly sensitive to my moon – particularly the full moon. I find it all really interesting. My chart describes leaving my country (correct), marrying a foreigner (correct) and working on the water (I used to work on private yachts where I met my husband), Just felt like sharing 🙂 🌕
Thank you. A solar eclipse hit exactly on my brother’s natal Sun when our father died. Our father was a spiritual man, never any substance use. The eclipse hit also in 2degree orb to my brothers Neptune, and exact on my Neptune. Someone I know, recently lost his father of old age 2nd May 2022. The solar eclipse hit the natal Mars at 10 Taurus of the man who’ s father died. This son had since a young man followed his father’ s footsteps in building and taking care of the family business. Hie father had been retired for a long time. The natal Mars at 10 Taurus is opposite his natal Neptune, not exact (born -62).
Very thorough! I have the eclipse hitting my 28 degree midheaven. I can’t seem to find anything that speaks to that conjunction. I also have my part of fortune on the degree. My work lately has not been very lucrative, not really making ends meet. It would be nice to think this eclipse will bring more sales my way.
thanks for another great article Chris! question: if an eclipse occurs conjunct a planet in the natal chart, should we also look to see what houses that planet rules? also, in the last episode of your award-winning, free, and incredibly easy to find on iTunes and other platforms podcast, The Astrology Podcast, you and eclipse expert Bernadette Brady briefly discussed “eclipse season”, the period of time surrounding total eclipses. what would a solar or lunar eclipse mean in a birth chart, and would being born during the season even matter vs. being born on the actual eclipse?
Hi Chris – looked st my chart as you suggested. I have Sag 29′ asc. The Sun and Moon trine my natal ascendant at the eclipse. How would you look at the impact the eclipse will have on me? (Eclipse hits my 9th House/Leo) — but I’m not planning on travel, or going back to school, or foreign languages… etc. Pretty much all the 9th H stuff isn’t resonating for me.
