Most places suck at providing belugas with proper care, but the design of this enclosure is actually really nice (it has unique areas to explore instead of just one “large” plain pool), they seemed very engaged with their training and seem to actually enjoy it, appear to have a good relationship with their caretakers, and have very few rake marks.
Jonathan. You are one of my inspirations. I am preparing to go and study Marine Biology at university in Sweden. I just wanted to say keep up the good work. If there were more people like you around, the world would be a better place to live. I completely agree with you about animals being kept in aquariums, in the right conditions. It would be great if they could all live in the wild without the need for captivity, but people as a whole are stupid and careless and these places help to educate the next generation about these wonderful animals. I would not feel under achieving at all, if I was to be offered a job working in a aquarium with good morale standing upon graduating. I went there and loved it, but since I’ve been more educated about cetaceans and their captivity… However, the Mystic Aquarium’s beluga exhibit is pretty impressive, at least considering the circumstances… I don’t know truly what to think though… Still, my little encounter with Juno was amazing.
I have been perusal Beluga articles for some time now & have LOVED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! Though I must say, my only qualm is, I don’t like having them in captivity! They’re WONDERFUL CREATURES & deserve the open Oceans! Gorgeous inquisitive creatures! If we don’t become aware of taking our broken fishing tackle & rubbish home with us, our grandchildren won’t get to see many of many of the Oceanic creatures that live in the vast waters!!! They are my favourite animals and have been for a few years now, a lot of people would argue about them being in captivity but I it OKAY for them because of the plastic waste etc. Many animals are being kept in captivity and are not being treated properly. I had no idea the melon was so soft. Very interesting article but very sad to see that tank is their whole world. I can’t imagine going form a place as awe inspiring as the ever changing ocean to tank. Even if they are born in captivity it’s still not what they deserve.I do understand they are ambassadors for their species but still, as smart as the animals are it’s very sad to see them in that little tank, which Im sure is nicer than some.
I was in Connecticut for a national competition, I wanted to go to the aquarium while i was there so badly so on the last day I managed to squeeze in within the last 45 minutes they were open. I remember there was no one there, not a single person around. And I didnt expect to see much but a Beluga was there, and when it saw me it came and played with me for a while until I had to go. I didn’t think he/she’d come to see just me, it was so fun. I really want to go back some day to see them again.
I am actually a docent for Mystic Aquarium (a person who ta, talks about the animals or display). I work at that habitat talking about our Beluga whales, I loved being able to see what happens behind the habitat and in the mornings. Man, I haven’t been to the aquarium in like 10-15 years(heck, maybe 20), and it looks COMPLETELY different now. We used to go a lot on our way to my grandma’s house in RI when we were kids. I even went to sailing camp at mystic seaport. I’ve definitely gotta get back. My sister lives in Colorado, and the last time they were here we were talking about bringing her son(who’s 3) there, but never made it. Then covid hit, and they haven’t been able to come in since. Hopefully next year we can take a trip down to mystic.

I have a beluga whale from seaworld. His name is Junior. He was 3 years of age, but now he is 4!! He always gets a hug and a kiss goodnight and the same in the morning . Junior is a talented little baby beluga, who can lay down, stand up, or walk! Jonatha -n bird is most succesful for making this article or else belugas wouldn’t be swimming today. Junior likes learning, playing games, cars, airplanes, spaceships, trains, boats, weather, and lots more! He also loves solving mysteries, acting, perusal movies, and science. He doesn’t like math. because you have to divide a lot of numbers. That beluga there at the aquarium, that’s junior’s mom, Melissa. Melissa loves junior very much. She takes care of him, She feeds him, tells him bedtime stories every night, and kisses him goodnight. Junior has the biggest questions to some of the biggest answers.
