Cosmo, the official mascot of Brigham Young University (BYU), has been a symbol of the university for over 60 years. Born on October 15, 1953, Cosmo made his first appearance in front of BYU fans, and his transformation has been remarkable. The Cougar, chosen by former coach Eugene L. Roberts in the early 1920s, has evolved significantly since its inception. Cosmo is known for his flips, tricks, and impressive dance moves, whether performing at sporting events or performing viral dances with the Cougarettes. In 1956, female student Peggy Herron Mortensen was given the chance to play the mascot. Today, almost 70 years later, Cosmo is a staple in BYU athletic events. His talents, intelligence, charisma, honor, and enthusiasm symbolize BYU standards.
Cosmo is the official mascot of BYU’s athletic teams and can be seen at almost all sporting events, wearing the uniform of the team that is playing. In 2002, Aaron G. McGavock (Cosmo 2000-01) graduated in Cosmo costume and went pro as a mascot, entertaining crowds in the NBA, AAA baseball, and the UFL. Cosmo is not only an athlete, dancer, flipper, dunker, and performer but also a full-time student at BYU.
