What Is Magic Mushroom Microdosing?

Microdosing is the practice of taking a small fraction of a full dose of a psychedelic substance, typically one-tenth to one-fifth of a recreational dose. Mushrooms are the most common psychedelic used in microdosing, as much research has been done on them. There is no single, clearly recognized definition of microdosing for any psychedelic drug, complicating attempts to perform consistent research. One definition is approximately.

Mushrooms commonly used in microdosing contain a chemical called psilocybin. Evidence from mostly small observational studies suggests that microdosing psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms, can improve cognitive function and alleviate symptoms of mental health issues. Microdosing is typically defined by experts as taking 5 percent to 10 percent of a full dose of a psychedelic, usually LSD or psilocybin, as a way to get the supposed mental health benefits.

Renewed research into the potential benefits of psychedelic drugs has led to interest in microdosing, taking a fraction of a regular dose. A study in rats suggests that microdosing psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, may help treat mental health conditions. Shrooms, also known as magic mushrooms, have been used recreationally for centuries across the globe. Two new studies estimate psychedelic use in the U.S. and both find magic mushrooms gaining in popularity, including some people who just want to try it. Psilocybin microdosing involves repeated self-administration of mushrooms containing psilocybin at doses small enough not to impact regular use.

  • Mushrooms did wonders in my life. I was severely traumatized years ago as a teenage, got diagnosed with cptsd. Also suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

  • This young lady articulated the decriminalization initiative in an exceptional manner. I respect the “community’s” perspective and relationship with nature. I further respect that she stated she 1) had an abuelita to guide her; and, 2) a community to be a part of that understands the benefits of nature’s goodness. EXCELLENT piece of journalism!

  • I have been on antidepressants for 9 years after the death of my son. I just recently started microdosing and stopped taking my antidepressants. I can already see a huge difference in my outlook and patience. I don’t have the extreme highs and lows. I feel more energetic, I can focus and I smile more. This has saved my sanity. I recommend this to everyone struggling with mental health issues.

  • I’m 5 months pregnant and started micro dosing 3 days ago…. I’ve been worried and concerned about the effects it would have on my baby, but my intuition told me it was okay so I did it… This article RANDOMLY popped up on my suggested and I can’t believe I got the confirmation that it was indeed safe for me and baby! Thankyou Universe, always listening, always providing… 🍄✨❤️

  • WOW what a great and in-depth view of the plus of micro-dosing + all the bullshit stigma that comes with it. I’ve been super depressed and anxious (even more during Covid) and I have been reading that psylo could be a great way to reset and lessen the need to take meds. I really want this to happen for me. I love how she went into the situation with a very educated and wise view + wants to work on herself and her alcohol problem. That is so cool and open to the good things. I love the stigma breaking! Go on gurl! So articulate and well-spoken!

  • I started smoking cigarettes since my teenage years. Got addicted for over 23 years. Cigarette addiction actually destroyed my life. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. I never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms

  • Not all microdoses are created equally. I have felt like I was slightly tripping on as low as 90 to 150 mg. Some strains are stronger but also some people are much more sensitive. Just something to be aware of. Some of the dosages she’s referencing here are mini or low doses, not micro doses. I love that she is speaking about her experience as a mother, specifically, since so many moms could benefit from this substance but are afraid to try it.

  • I’m a mom of two and used to take hero doses before I became a mom because my family also was riddled with addicts and narcissists. It changed my whole world, I no longer saw the world as a victim of my life but I saw it as this incredible journey that I can choose my paths. When I became a mom I fell into the societal mind set of it’s dangerous. I recently started micro dosing and I wish I had done this after my son (my oldest) was born because I ended up in that pit of depression and have been fighting it for the past 4 years. Micro dosing has saved me again!!!

  • Oh my, your son is one super fortunate soul and human being with you as his mother! Wow! I’m glad to see that this article had 248k views, so people get to educate themselves on these sacred substances which had been part of the traditional cultures of indigenous peoples the world over for millenia! Thank you for condensing that vast knowledge around these healing plants in such a comprehensive and easy to understand way, awesome!

  • awesome interview! so glad you chose to talk about this. microdosing stopped my depression and helped me get over fentanyl. i cant tell you how relieved i was – i was actually happy!!! i no longer need to microdose, its been 4 or 5 years now. now, if i microdose that day or couple of days, its because i need to focus on something important, or go through a tough couple of days, or be there for someone who needs compassion or advice thats important to them in their life ( im not very compassionate normally, im more “tough love” ive been told) so not only has it helped me change the things i needed to change but also grow and become more balanced. i never thought i could get over depression though. i was literally suicidal for all of my teenage years and 20’s. i am 39 now and happy. 🙂

  • I’ve never done a microdose. I always did about 3.5 grams at once. Don’t know if that qualifies as a heroic dose or not, but it had me out of my body for about 6 hours it seemed. I’m already pretty sharp, but I get at least a 50 point boost when I am on these things. Answers to hard questions, and incredible ideas spring up, but you forget by the time it wears off. The desire to drink beer just wasn’t there. It was like there was no room for that desire anymore. Really an intense experience. Waking up the next day is much different than if you used weed or alcohol. With booze, you may or may not get a hangover, but you still didn’t get enough sleep. With weed, you wake up feeling well rested, but nothing much beyond that. Waking up from mushrooms feels like you caught up on every single missed wink of sleep throughout your life. The glowing the woman was talking about is real. You do feel like you glow because you just had all the bad stuff cleansed from your brain. Of course it has diminishing returns and you are eventually re-polluted again. That is one of the bummers of mushrooms, you can’t do them every single day. I may or may not have had control of a pound of mushrooms at sometime in the past. I thought I was just going to do an eighth as day for a while. First day was great, next day absolutely nothing. As it turns out, I had to wait about a month before I could gain the full effect again. I mean, that is cheap, cheap therapy right there. Get your mind righted monthly.

  • Thank you so much. An informative and amazing interview. They both took a logical, informative, and compassionate approach to mushrooms. The young Mom expressed herself in such an intelligent, and humanistic fashion. Her children are so lucky to have such a Mom who prioritizes her health and her future generation. Great job. I have been a nurse for over twenty two years and I hope this becomes part of our medical model.

  • mikaela is awesome! i have been following her for a while now for education and support. i microdose to help with focus and memory retention while i am in school to earn a doctorate in medicine. i also microdose to aid in emotional healing. there are so many benefits! if you are curious definitely do some research and look into it!! the medicine may be calling to you for a reason. ❤️🍄.

  • I love psilocybin. It’s helped me so much after dealing with trauma. Depression meds and their dr visits actually harmed my mental health because they aren’t reliable and you have to keep trying meds. I am glad people are accepting the medicine can help people and grows on earth for a reason. She did a great job in this interview!

  • I’ve been doing this for 9 yrs. I’m a type 1 diabetic and it helps me mentally handle this diagnosis and it actually helps regulate my blood sugar levels. It helps me focus and control my emotions. I got a flat tire one night & a cop stopped to help & by the end of his help. I was charged with a class 4 fenoly for 3.5 grams. It truly needs to be decriminalized. I had no record before this. I’m now facing 2 yrs probation with piss test & check in 1x a month.plus fines. Al for trying to save my mind & health. Oh I also got fired from my job the night I got out of jail. I’m now going to do what I can here in Illinois to get it decriminalized. Idk where to start. But I’m going to figure it out.

  • Madame…. you are a BEAUTIFUL Woman. Thank you for speaking out and peeling back the veil (ha ha), and exposing to the world a very important subject. These healing properties of mushrooms seem to be SUBSTANTIAL. Let’s bring this Medicine to the masses. Seems like the Mushroom has a plan ! This is a wonderful interview from a CBS San Diego reporter.

  • Extremely impressed with the knowledge and very well explained broken down version of the relationship with the mushroom 🍄,my experience has been not only “magic” also medicinals as well!! I was blessed to find this article!!! I’m sober after 25 years and will be forever after one interaction with psilocybin. I will always be a believer and remember I was changed subconsciously, without effort really I made a dedication to my thoughts…to let them go… knowing that I would follow.

  • Last month I did a quarter ounce (7 grams)and watched Jurassic Park 3. I was fascinated at the dinosaurs, and the Spinosaurus blew my mind. There was a lot going on in my living room ( hallucinations ), but I was glued to the screen. There were creatures running all over the place out of the corner of my eyes. I went in knowing I was gonna being tripping heavy and to just hang on and enjoy the ride. That’s what I did. I had my favorite Pink Floyd music playing full blast and was not following the plot. Just laid back in my recliner perusal with this big grin on my face. I had plenty of experience from when i was a teenager. I’m 62 now. No ego killer. I didn’t think about anything except how lucky we are that dino’s were not alive anymore.

  • i am 71 and make all my own medicine at home and have for at least twenty five years. i was a tobacco smoker for a long time and started to ruin my body. i am repairing it now. being a long time vegetarian as well (since 1984) regular Western medicines do not work for me…sometimes not at all. but herbs do. so i take whatever tonics, teas or foods that heal whatever i think needs some help. i had bone spurs and colonic polyps and God knows what else. it is all gone now after years of herbals. this is a great article. since the sixties i have been a quiet proponent of LSD, psilocybin and natural healing. your explanations are good enough to find most of these mushroom products online. thank you.

  • Amen! This woman is so intelligent… shrooms had me on a deeper level, I was so present and so alert, I was social, I felt like I could do anything, I felt so alive and so free, my level of happiness was something I felt like I needed all my life… I had the best laugh… ugh it was so wonderful, legalize shrooms!!!!!!

  • This gives me so much hope. Ive suffered from depression and generalized anxiety for decades and had disappointing results with SSRIs. Sure they work, but I felt so stabilized in my emotions that I went months without feeling pure joy or being able to have a good cry. I also had annoying side effects. I recently had the opportunity to try shroomies for the first time and wow!! Microdosing could do what antidepressants could only WISH they could do, and without side effects. Amazing. The fact that my ancestors used it for centuries also brings me peace 💖

  • When it comes to league tables of harmful stimulants, alcohol is invariably at the top along with heroin and crack. Cannabis is usually somewhere in the middle. Mushrooms consistently lie at the very bottom. Taken in very small doses they are not only completely harmless but beneficial. It will take a brave government to do so, but people should be encouraged to take the occasional light psilocybin trip. We’d all be better humans for it.

  • Thank u for explaining this…i appreciate her bravery & would love to micro dose myself but have no contacts. I have suffered with depression my whole life but rarely let it show on the outside to other people…every day it feels I’m treading in deep water with no way out. I think this could help. I would appreciate anyone who could help me. Thank u both 🙏💕

  • My Daughter Started To Try The Microdosing .. It Changed Her Personality and She Started To Get A Bit Mean and EGOIC.. When She Stopped Her Behavior Stopped.. I think It Works For Some But For Others Not So Good ..She Now Is On Drugs and Is Suffering Greatly From Losing A Job, Home Etc…Cautionary Measures Should Be Taken Even In MICRO Dosing ..

  • Im all for psychedelics, they got me off of drugs, (I was a heroin addict for 10 yrs, clean for 7 yrs,), but she was using mushrooms when she was pregnant to quit drinking while she was pregnant?, um she shouldn’t have been doing anything while she was pregnant, including mushrooms, and why was she going out partying while she was pregnant?…,this is all wrong

  • As someone with bipolar 2 who had a terrible experience with microdosing, if you have or have had in the past severe mental illness, do your research and proceed with caution. There is so much good but the bad is bad and nothing is worth losing your mind over. I think mushrooms, lcd, etc are over gloreified without anyone discussing the potential dangers. Even if it is just in the minority.

  • The numbers in term of grams don’t mean anything, it depends of varieties. For the strongest mushrooms, something like ~0.2gr is indeed a microdose, but for the weakest 0.2 is absolutely nothing and you will feel nothing. Maybe it will activate some connections in your brain and make you like 2% more relaxed and focused, but it will be really a joke.

  • Having anxiety is okay. It’s a normal and healthy response for people to feel anxiety when the world is on the brink of a new World War. It’s OK to not fear our emotions and the warning signals our body sends us. If you are in touch with your emotions, you won’t be afraid of anxiety. It’s part of the human experience. Especially in such an unstable world. By killing your anxiety completely, you also kill part of your humanity.

  • “Is it even new” … this is a brilliant way to end the interview – These medicines have been around for as long as time, and human beings have worked with them for much of our evolution … Why did that change and why is a great question to consider if you’re skeptical about the legality of these substances.

  • I so wanted to watch this but I couldn’t use Bluetooth… well, I could but it only played in right ear .. a problem with THIS article because I have watched and listened to several today without that problem. I would have loved to have listened to this lovely lady but had to stop with involved five minutes. Hope you fix your audio problems

  • Starts right off with misinformation. 1. Microdosing has traditionally been done BOTH with LSD and psilocybin mushrooms. 2. “Sub-perceptual” is a very arguable term. If you perceive any effects whatsoever then by definition it can’t be Subperceptual. 3. In all my research I’ve NEVER heard of a gram of mushrooms used as a microdose, even for hard-core experienced users.

  • I absolutely love the way she speaks of her experience and is so honest! This is helping so many women and people everywhere. Not a huge fan of the negative vibe I got from the interviewer, but she’s under educated so she may have just been trying to understand too. Thank you for sharing your experience. I appreciate you. 🤍

  • @ 1:25 – She’s describing doses that are higher than actual micro dosages, when describing object pulsating and breathing and seeming ‘alive’, those are clearly not ‘sub perceptual effects, quite the contrary. @ 2:10 – Also I don’t think one should use psychedelics while pregnant, even if it’s micro-dosing. i say wait for solid scientific evidence that that’s not in any ways detrimental to the development of one’s child.

  • The Netherlands decriminalized marijuana and psilocybin; however, due to problems with psilocybin, it was again banned in 2008. This is a very open-minded nation, so their decision to ban the drug should be seriously considered. While the interviewee considers her relationship with her child as improved through microdosing, I wonder what the long term effects on her child will be. My drunk father thought that the family was having fun when he was drunk and running around the house naked. I assure you, it was not fun for the rest of the family. It was traumatic. The long term effects on both the users and the families of users are not know. I hope that the entire enterprise is as therapeutic as this interviewee believes. I simply have my reservations.

  • It depends on the level of consciousness of the user, what ever your level is psychedelics will enhance it. I loved my psychedelic experiences, we did everything lsd, mescaline, peyote buttons. For me once per month was the most i could do, after that i needed to rebuilld my mental energy level. My psychedelic period was from 1968 to 1972

  • I microdose as well but damn she’s a quack. No one makes medicine better than her? What’s she gonna do when she gets sick and needs actual medicine? Is she gonna whip up some antibiotics in the kitchen? And using drugs while being pregnant is a risk. It’s no studied so we don’t know what it can do to the fetus. In fact, it’s quite stupid to do that without any medical insight.

  • Dude I’ve been taking it in capsules for 2 months and my depression it’s gone! No BS I can go out now I hate being home doing nothing I’m active and super happy. Don’t feel high or stupid just feel alert and super happy. I changed my hairstyle my clothes I look more alive (friends and family said) when I was in antidepressants I felt like crap and like a zombie

  • as powerful and amazing as the experience is, its SO hard to describe it at the same time. There are no real words. You just have to take them. Microdosing is cool because you cant really be tripping and driving at the same time, but dont be afraid of tripping. Those deep, colorful, miraculous trips are SO important as well, you just have to space them out. You can microdose often, but you have to space trips out to like every other week AT LEAST, for anyone who needed to know. it wont hurt you, it just wont work if you try to TRIP too close together. I got my medicine, im bout have my ride tomorrow! OMF FALL COLORS ARE SO AWESOME ON MUSHROOMS!!!!!!!!!

  • She was doing micros to escape depression just the same as drug and alcohol users do ie self medication. That it comez from nature is not an argument. So do grapes barley rye willowbark. However glad the mushrooms work. I support psychadelic treatments so long as it doesnt lead to abuse and addiction. Re cannabis ive seen damage done to 2 people. One committed suicide from depression related to cannabis addiction.

  • nice to know what’s coming from the West coast to the East….nice little surprise. can’t wait up here in Maine. Native American detox would probably find microdosing useful since growing shrooms is easy and not too expensive — free from a friend. Pine Ridge? Alaska? always on the lookout for a nice drug and alcohol detox with some fun added!!
