What Is Meant By “Magic Keyboard”?

The Apple Magic Keyboard is the default keyboard for Apple devices, launched in 2015 as the successor to the Apple Wireless Keyboard. It features an improved scissor mechanism beneath each key for increased stability, optimized key travel, and a lower profile. The Magic Keyboard with Touch ID offers built-in features for emoji, keyboard language switching, locking the MacBook Pro, and performing various system functions. The Magic Keyboard is a $299 (11-inch) or $349 (12.9-inch) case that magnetically attaches to the iPad Pro. Once connected, the iPad “hovers” above the keyboard, allowing users to pivot the keyboard.

The Magic Keyboard is a family of wireless computer keyboards manufactured by Foxconn under contract for Apple Inc. It allows users to perform basic functions like adjusting screen brightness and volume without touching their iPad. The Magic Keyboard with Touch ID has built-in features for emoji, keyboard language switching, locking the MacBook Air, and performing many system functions.

The Magic Keyboard folds smaller than most other keyboard cases, wrapping tightly around the iPad but lacks protection for the iPad sides. The Magic Keyboard is a solid keyboard that will work for most people, offering rechargeability, battery life, and reduced keyboard noise.

📹 Apple Magic Keyboard – 1 Year Later: Still Worth It?

Here’s my honest long term review of the Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Are they still worth the high price tag after a year?

What is the difference between a Magic Keyboard and a regular keyboard?

The Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio are two keyboards designed for iPad users. The Magic Keyboard has a trackpad, backlit keys, and pass-through charging, requiring users to connect a Bluetooth mouse or use the iPad’s touch screen for navigation. It also has a USB-C port for pass-through charging, allowing users to charge their iPad. The Magic Keyboard has a floating design and allows the iPad to be adjusted between 90 and 130 degrees, while the Smart Keyboard Folio has only two incline positions.

The Magic Keyboard uses a scissor-switch mechanism and has a 1mm key travel. It is backlit for use in the dark, while the Smart Keyboard Folio lacks backlit keys. Both keyboards come in two variants, one for iPad Pro 12. 9-inch (3rd, 4th, and 5th generations) and the other for all three generations of iPad Pro 11-inch and 4th and 5th generations iPad Air with a 10. 9-inch screen.

Apple’s Magic Keyboard is the better option due to its trackpad, backlit keys, and pass-through charging, but it costs $349 for the 12. 9-inch model. The Smart Keyboard Folio is a more affordable option for those who don’t need the trackpad. The iPad’s supported trackpad gestures, such as swiping vertically for scrolling, pinching for zoom, and swiping for app switching, make the Magic Keyboard a worthwhile investment.

Is MacBook keyboard same as Magic Keyboard?

In its product nomenclature, Apple designates the internal keyboards in MacBooks released subsequent to November 2019 as the Magic Keyboard. This designation is indicative of a scissor-mechanism design with keys of a slightly shallower profile. The initial design was offered in two configurations: The A1644 Magic Keyboard and the A1843 Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad.

Does a Magic Keyboard act as a case?

The Magic Keyboard is a keyboard accessory for the iPad Pro that offers protective elements similar to a case. When closed, it covers the iPad Pro, protecting the screen and back panel from damage. However, it is not fully enclosed, leaving the sides exposed, making them susceptible to scratches. The Magic Keyboard’s bulkiness may not be ideal for users who prefer a streamlined approach to accessories. The keyboard is designed to enhance the typing experience, not provide protection.

To enhance the iPad Pro’s experience, users should invest in a good case. The Magic Keyboard is not a fully enclosed case, and its bulkiness may not be ideal for those who prefer a more minimalist approach.

Is Magic Keyboard good for writing?

Apple’s keyboard case offers a perfect feel for the keys, mirroring the feel of recent MacBooks. The keyboard’s positioning is good for muscle memory and writing speed. The trackpad is large enough. However, the 12-inch version of the Magic Keyboard has a slightly compressed feel, which may be a bit “typing on a Netbook” for some users. The side and edge-oriented keys suffer the most. All keyboard cases for 11-inch iPads have some type compression. The backlit keys are subtle and work well in low light or darkness, but there are no key backlighting adjustment controls. Overall, Apple’s keyboard case offers a comfortable keyboard experience.

Why do people like the Apple Magic keyboard?

The Apple keyboard is a perfect fit for fast typers, with its plastic keys and decent amount of travel. It has been found to be the perfect sweet spot between shallow Intel MacBooks and first-generation keyboards, as it provides just enough travel for users who prefer fast typing. The keyboard’s durability is appreciated by many users, and it is not advertised as quiet, unlike the MacBook low-travel keyboard.

The keyboard is Bluetooth only and works best with macOS, but it can also be used with Windows and Linux. Pairing is easy and the keyboard connects automatically via Bluetooth if you are nearby. To turn it off, simply press a few keys and it will automatically connect to your MacBook. This seamless connectivity is something no other keyboard can achieve with MacBooks.

The layout and size of the keys are also noteworthy, with little difference in size or layout between the Mac keyboard and the standalone Magic Keyboard. This allows users to remember where everything is, making typing faster and easier. Although there is no Touch Bar and a numeric pad for digit inputs, the basic layout of the letters remains the same.

Battery life is another important aspect of the Apple keyboard. As a Bluetooth keyboard, it requires recharging every now and then, but the battery on this keyboard is incredibly good, with no degradation in capacity over three or four years. The author estimates that they charge the keyboard around once a month. Overall, the Apple keyboard is a great choice for those who prefer fast typing and a comfortable keyboard experience.

  • Thanks for the tips. I have the new Magic Keyboard for the M4 iPad Pro and I learned a few things indeed (new to trackpads). I love this keyboard and special thanks for the bonus tip. I do draw on my iPad and I was wondering if I could do anything to improve the position of the screen. The new magic keyboard wobbles a bit when you draw on it while it’s in the standard position, but turning it around makes drawing a whole lot better/easier. So thank you for that 👍

  • Thank you for these excellent tips. I was wondering if you would help me sort out a an annoying problem with the key board. When I am using say Twitter, after replying to a comment, as soon as i click reply, the screen changes and goes to the home page. It’s frustrating me! It does not happen when the key board is not attached. Thank you

  • Not sure if this is new to someone out there but pressing the shift key while arrowing right or left highlights that word to the right or left. Also, holding down the shift key while pressing down or up arrow, highlights a whole line. Or command home or end while holding the shift key highlights to the end or beginning from the cursor point.

  • Hi Tom. I have the Magic Keyboard and I would like to know why I keep getting a boarder randomly cropping parts of my screen. It can move when using the arrow keys on the right bottom but if I want to type something my space bar doesn’t want to work. Any help with this would be great. Love you YouTube page and learning heaps of information that you share. Thank Bryan.

  • I just got my new magic keyboard yesterday but I can’t figure out how to get rid of the onscreen keyboard to strictly type on the magic keyboard. The Magic one will not accept the space bar entry nor the caps/shift controls. I have to use the onscreen keyboard to do those functions. Is there a setting to change this? I had the older version of this magic keyboard and never had this problem.

  • Very interesting, as usual. Thank you. But I am quite unhappy because the iPad Pro cannot only be used in landscape mode (horizontally) and not in portrait mode (vertically). I tried to buy another type of support but it did not work. And several apps I use regularly are in Portrait mode. Therefore I am not in love with this iPad and prefer to use my old iPad Air. Any idea maybe ?

  • Thank you for all the tips. There is a tip I’m still trying to find. For the cursor, I used to be able to rest the cursor on say a word or a word in the settings and it would actually expand to that word, where it would have a rim of red around it, due to me changing the color of the border for my cursor. Know I can’t find the tip. Do you happen to know what I should do in settings? Thank you.

  • I don’t feel the “escape” key is important. You can hold globe and H to go home or slide 3 fingers up on trackpad. Two easy ways to escape to Home Screen without changing the keys. No need for the escape anymore. There are other ways to leave the app. I don’t know that’s what I am feeling anyway. Stay safe.
