Mystic Seaport Museum, also known as Mystic Seaport: The Museum of America and the Sea, is the largest maritime museum in the United States. It houses over 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels, including the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America’s oldest commercial ship still in existence. The museum is set up like an old port town with 144 buildings and a fleet of wooden ships anchored in its harbor.
Founded in 1929, Mystic Seaport has been dedicated to preserving Mystic’s maritime history since 1929. It is often recognized as one of the best maritime museums in the country. The museum-village recreates the sailing ship era, exhibiting along its waterfront the 19th-century whaler Charles W. Morgan.
Mystic was a significant Connecticut seaport with more than 600 ships built over 135 years starting in 1784. The museum has been part of downtown since the late 1920s and is situated on 19 acres of land with a stunning view of the waterfront and marina. The museum boasts sweeping views of the Mystic River and is maintained by volunteers.
The Collections Research Center at Mystic Seaport opened in 2001, and the museum continues to share stories of rich maritime history for over 90 years. The museum-village offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in history on its 19-acre grounds along the beautiful Mystic River.
