Providence College’s first mascot, a Dalmatian named “Friar of What-Ho”, was purchased by the Friars Club and introduced at a Providence football game against Niagara in 1935. The Dominican order was closely associated with hounds, and the first dog was a black cowl head covering. The school’s first mascot, Friar Dom, was born from the ashes of a dead Dalmatian and has been roaming the capital of Rhode Island since 2002.
The Friars officially have two mascots, Friar Dom and Huxley. While some may find Dom creepy, the evolution of this mascot has led to a generation of young hoops fans who now see him as a dynamic duo and mascot pair extraordinaire. The person playing Friar Dom was clearly distraught after Friday’s eight-point loss, so much so that they stood facing a wall and, in response, they stood facing a wall.
The Friars are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Providence College, located in Providence, Rhode Island. Friar Dom is named after the Dominican Friars who founded the college. According to the school’s branding policy, reasonable parking for Friar Dom, Huxley, and/or cheer must be provided. Providence College assumes no liability in the use of these mascots.
