For better insight, I recommend reading the divination portions of Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament by John Walton. Overall, it is a mistake to think that the world around us does not have spiritual properties; ancient Jews and Christians did not believe that. That said, any human practice that tries to take control of power from the spiritual realm violates Yahweh’s desire 1) for us to submit to his authority and 2) to partner with us in all that he does. This desire to take something under human authority is reflected in humans trying to define good and bad on their own in Genesis 3, and it is reflected anytime humans do something outside of the will of God.
