I’ve been a lifelong Bears fan, and the Steelers were the first team outside of Chicago I got to know. I only got to know the Steelers because as a little kid, I kept passing by a factory that had a logo similar to the Steelers logo. I’ve been perusal the NFL since 1973. My Grandparents took me EVERY year/summer vacation to the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. There I got to see classic game highlights of historical teams, games, and retro looks even back in 1976. The classic Redskins spear on a Maroon helmet. Then the yellow helmet with the ®️🪶 and so on. The classic Rams white horns, the classic Eagles white helmet and green wings, and the older Chicago Bears {C in white. So many memories of amazing players and teams. Epic and fun! Getting to go to that historic place as a kid was amazing! Lambeau Field! To get to walk inside it at 5, 6, 7, and 8 years old was surreal! Knowing that players played on there like Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Ray Nitchke, and other icons! As I grew up I saw Lynn Dickey, Chester Marcol, John Brockington, and more players I loved but weren’t always the best teams. I became a MASSIVE fan of those little quarter machine football helmets. A little plastic replica NFL helmet, and a set of stickers. The side logos or logo in the Steelers case, or none in the Browns case except for the middle strip on top. At the HoF, they had sets of these helmets. You could buy the entire NFL, or just the NFC or AFC, OR you could buy the divisions. The NFC West, East, Central as well as the AFC divisions as well. They came with a Stand, a Goalpost, and depending on which division you got 4 or 5 helmets, stickers, and face masks. These little plastic helmets got me really into the Logos, the colors, and the jersey looks of the teams.
Reminds me of all the helmets I tried to collect when I was a kid in those toy vending machines. I still have my helmet magnet collection of every team. I had to use an extra 49ers’ helmet and change it to the Bucs logo. And the Browns are just Bengals without the sticker applied. And I had to cut out my own letters for the NY logo helmets. Good times.

I really dig the Eagles having their helmet colors reversed. The white helmet with green wings looked really neat. Would love to see them play with those retro uniforms one day! Fly Eagles fly! 58:59 the curved feathers were because of an adhesive defect with from the decal manufacturer not being able to keep the logos on the helmet. The curved feathers stuck to the helmet more effectively and the problem with the adhesive was solved in 1983. Only Joe Washington wore the 1972-81, 83-19 logo during 1982 as he had a different helmet and didn’t have any problem with the decals falling off. (painted?)
Awesome article. 33yo Jet Fan, grew up as a kid with the Kelly green Jets streak logo and my first few games at then Giants stadium and it will always be my favorite no matter what. They looked amazing when they wore those helmets on MNF this year. The 80s/90s dark blue and red piping Giants unis with the Giants underlined on the helmet is also by far my favorite look for the “other” team in town as well. Strange case of both teams’ secondary iteration and late 20th century look being far superior to what they use currently.
Very nicely done piece on the history of the logos. Personally I miss the 49ers logo from 1968-1988/1988-1995 (they are basically the same). Also, it sucks not having the Oilers logo in the league anymore. Like the 49ers, that is one of the few logos/names that actually has clear ties to the city the team plays in.
An additional tidbit that I’m surprised was not included in the article is that the Atlanta Falcons’ helmets included a pair of thin gold stripes outside of the black and white stripes on the original red helmets. This was apparently a nod to Georgia Tech fans, who noted that the Falcons’ helmets and color scheme were the same as the University of Georgia. They wore the gold stripes from the team’s inception in 1966 through the 1969 season.
A very entertaining watch, thank you! One major inconsistency…team moves were highlighted. But the Browns moved to Baltimore and began the Ravens. The Browns later became an expansion team. So appreciate the need for coherence, but ownership is totally different from what was reported here. One last thing: Miami is no way the same now without the helmet on the dolphin! 😛
Man.. Those 1936 Bears unis are just awesome. Maybe my favorite throwback after the red Pat Patriot unis.. The orange stripes just look great. Probably helps that my favorite college team is Michigan haha but those are just clean and classic uniforms that won’t ever go out of style.. I wish the Bears would wear them more often
I’m a Raiders’ fan but that has nothing to do with me saying that we have the best logo and uniforms in all of sports hands down. Having said that, in the NFL at least, I would have picked the old Redskins’ logo and unis for the second spot. Even with the name change, they could have done better, Commanders just doesn’t sound right. Even Washington Senators would have fit the bill a bit better.

Great article, long overdue ! One of the best NFL articles ever. Each team has a nice logo, but the GIANTS spelt out is way better than ny. It looks terrible as the pale colors do too, the previous 1980s colors were better. Seeing all the helmets together you get a sense of awe of all the team’s logos, except the Browns who need one. The colors are ugly enough and a logo would help. I am proud to say as the Cowboys biggest fan, it is quite a classic logo and color. I am not being prejudice, it just is. The logo is also my second signature. The Raiders logo is sharp too. The Rams need to return to the mustard yellow and blue of the 1970s, it was classy. I like the current Bills logo, it is a good color. Colors of helmets make a difference with how a logo stands out and the Bills are an example of that. Tampa Bay for some stupid reason enlarged their current logo and it is too big for the side of the helmet, it extends too far in front, I can’t believe it has not been fixed yet. The Redskins (yes they will be the Redskins still for years to come), still need help and the new W looks bad. Great article, thanks for posting.
I love these articles, it gives my brain extra info. I can use in conversation. Like I’ve never put together the Packers G being in the shape of a football, I just always thought it fit the helmet better being stretched a little ya know and they were my favorite team when I was really young, Brett Farves career basically but at 13 I jumped on the Eagles bandwagon and haven’t left, I found my forever team lol. Even went to the SB parade in 2017, what a great great time. All the Eagles Nation in full effect, shutting down downtown Philly for the day, chants for our beloved Birds, we did the E-A-G-L-E-S multiple times on the train or subway whatever it is on the way into the city. Chanting Big Dick Nick when Foles went by on the bus and again when we went tobthe front for the speeches, Jason Kelce…..your a Philly Legend from how you spoke so elegantly about the team and the city!
I think I’d like to see Buc Bruce in the modern colors. Personally, I like the idea of a suave mascot rather than always being about fierceness. It would have been a good recruitment tool for receivers. The bright colors also makes sense for Florida, but Miami might hsvr had an issue without. Going the opposite way from the Dolphins also makes some sense. Nevertheless, the Errol Flynn logo is cool. I wonder if it will get a redesign using the player formerly known for being married to Giselle.
Awesome article. I like some of these history vids. Anywho, a couple of things here: – I don’t want this to be taken to mean anything one way or the other but with all the furor about the Redskins I had NO idea that it was a Native American who petitioned to have that logo reinstated after Lombardi died. All the other implications of the name and logo are best left to be quiet about. – The “GB” logo in the Packers section was also worn by Bart Starr when he was the head coach of the team so that’s an even more recent case of it being on the sidelines than the Lombardi example – I didn’t know about the Bears wishbone “C” being off center. – I also didn’t know about the “E” hidden in the Eagles logo either. – It’s nice to see an actual color photo from that time of the ill-fated 49ers logo. and speaking of ill-fated, who knew the infamous unveiling of a new logo/wordmark for the Pats would serve as inspiration for the Flying Elvis. IIRC I think that was done during a MNF game. – Last but not least, in looking all the Dolphins logos it really makes their current one look more like a whale.

The Browns non-logo logo is my all-time favourite. It’s the reason why a starry-eyed kid in Manitoba adopted the Browns as my favourite team of all time. My mind was blown up when realizing the Browns didn’t have a logo. I kept looking to the other side of the helmet to see if I was missing something. I would stare at the helmets wondering what the logo could be. Are the Browns just messing with us, I wondered? Is a logo going to pop up at any time? The beauty of the Browns no-logo logo is it opens up the imagination to all kinds of possibilities. It is genius.
The tri-cornered hat the Patriots had wasn’t bad. It has a REALLY RETRO LOOK. A retro AFL look like the Chargers old white helmet with the⚡Lightning⚡ bolt and the #number under it. I’d LOVE to see the Patriots use this throwback look. Not obviously as a new consistent design but I love it when for 1 or 2 games teams use their retro designs. I would love it if during specific times during the season teams would use their throwback uniforms and helmets. BOTH HOME & AWAY TEAMS! Doing it 2 or 3 times a year would bring a huge boost to marketing, jersey sales, helmet/memorabilia/collectible/even action figure sales. Imagine being able to get retro mini helmets, or even those 👕t-shirt👕/NFL 👕”jersey”👕 sales would fly off shelves. One reason I’m surprised they HAVEN’T DONE IT!?! GREED! LOL.
With Native blood in me, I never took offense to the Redskins name or logo. I turn it as a good way to teach the children about our American culture which includes its early inhabitants. Some people were just being too loud and making big stinks about something that does shades a bit racial but wildly misunderstood.
Having spent parts of my early childhood in Ohio, but not having a team yet after living in Georgia, two places in both England and France and one year in S. Korea, I was so happy to see the stripes on Cincinnati Bengals. It was very hard to tell which team was on offense. Same colored shirts, pants, helmets, socks, and shoes. Even the stadiums were similar enough that you has to look carefully. Teams I’d like to see go back, permanently, to older uniforms. Jets. I can’t stand the bright green. I love the old school green football emblem on a white background. Broncos. The old Orange D on a blue background with a white bronco in the D was unique. The new one isn’t nearly as cool or as easy to see. Falcons. I can’t stand the Black red and white. Go back to the all red with black highlights, including the black bird. Lions. I wish they’d go back to the 1980s Lion on the helmet. They’re just too busy with lines and stripes. Seahawks. What’s with the spots on the middle of the helmet. Go back to the silver helmet with the bird.
I remember as a kid Chiquita Bananas used to put NFL helmet stickers on the bananas. I would collect them and stick them on my desk at school. During breaks we’d play mini-football games on our desks with small paper footballs, sticking on our favorite teams’ helmets on the football. Then we discovered girls…

33:33 I remember the Texans having a white helmet for their original uniform unveiling (and even had the helmet with an inaccurate uniform in Madden NFL 2002) before they switched to the current blue. Low key was hoping that’d be mentioned. Otherwise, pretty in depth article. Now gotta update it with all the 2022 helmets that came out.
Every time I see the Cleveland Browns colors, it makes me think of Tootsie Roll candy. They’re basically the same colors. When the Browns wear those brown uniforms with the orange, and white stripe sleeves, they look like they’re sponsored by Tootsie Roll or something. I’m not sure how the NFL pictures missed it but the Baltimore Ravens also uses two logos. One for the helmet and one for literature and advertisements, etc.. And just like Pittsburgh, the ravens second logo also uses the city crest so the article got it incorrect when it said Pittsburgh has been the only city to ever use the city crest in its logo. The ravens added the city crest to the logo as a final gesture of paranoia from the Colts, move that if the team ever moved the new city, would either have to redesign everything or be classy like Art Modell, and leave the history to the city. In case they ever get an expansion team or another team moves in to resume the identity.
There’s a lot more than 2 teams that have “different” logos on the different sides of the helmet. The Chiefs and Ravens just stand out a little more because they have text that doesn’t get a mirror image while the rest of the logo does. Try putting the Horns of the Vikings and Rams, the Bolt of the Chargers, the Wings of the Eagle, the flag of the Buccaneers, the Buffalo of the Bills, the Fighting Feline of the Lions, the Flaming T of the Titans, the Jumping Cetacean of the Dolphins, the Bird of Prey of the Falcons, or the individual mascot head of the Cardinals, Broncos, Jaguars, Panthers, Patriots, or Seahawks on the wrong side of any of their respective helmets and you will quickly see that it’s off. On top of those, the Steelers helmet has no logo on the left side, so that could be argued as different as well.
The Falcon is an F?!! I never put that together, and you just blew my mind! This was amazing, and I love this kind of stuff! (It always bothered me the numbers on Tamba Bay’s jersey were digital-style. Like, why?) My favorites are the classics that don’t change like Dallas, Green Bay, the 49ers and the Vikings. That’s literally how something gets to become iconic. But I’ve also got a soft spot for any red & blue combos like the Patriots and Buffalo, and most of the 80s-90s logos I grew up with like the D-Broncos and helmet Dolphins. The Bengals have the “coolest” headgear by far, but it could have been the Rams if they didn’t screw it up with this new design. I feel bad for Washington, who’s fear of offending any groups reminds me of what the Dean came up with for Greendale’s mascot in “Community.” There are no logos I flat out dislike, but I can’t say I’m a fan of blank Browns. Or the Titans. Even if the “t” is a sword (kinda cool), their helmets look like eggs to me, and I miss the Houston oil derricks. . If you can’t tell, I loved this. Thank you
Personally,.. I would have named Washington team the Washington Hogs because not only the fans respected and wore pig like makeup, masks, and other cosplay creations they come up with, it also dates back to the founding fathers/ members of the famous offensive line who started it all. i always thought that the chief’s modern logo soon got altered to have the K over the C, but i didnt know that they just put both logos on each side of the helmet. im not sure if they still have it but in one of the Chiefs locker room has a giant chiefs logo, and that has the C over the K. or its the other way around- im remembering this from a field trip
Hopefully someone will have more brains than me and can answer this question. At 40:14 I think I see someone who looks like Marty Schottenheimer. Is that him because His Wikipedia doesn’t say anything about him with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Curiosity made me wonder how he ended up a Head Coach in Kansas City Missouri. Granted, I hated him as the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, if it was a difficult game he couldn’t fight his way out of a Wet Paper Bag. He honestly made me so mad growing up and perusal The Kansas City Chiefs. I just had to go outside the minute I couldn’t see us pulling out a W. I’m 46 and I grew up in Grandview Missouri. I’ve always loved my Chiefs but I can now say, I’m so proud of them and I still can’t understand how the Eagles let go of Big Red. Seriously, how and why lmmfao.
I think the only change that displeased me. Is the Redskin logo and brand being changed completely. All because some groups claim they speak on behalf of the Tribes. Calling it “harmful”. When it was a NATIVE AMERICAN they lobbied the team into using it. Boils down to the that this change hurts the Tribes more. All because these groups are going after the other teams that dare use Native American Iconography as their logos. Which is basically demanding erasing the natives of these lands before the Europeans came to ruin it all. Though I think this group tried to demand the Florida State Seminoles to change their school icon. And the Seminole TRIBE laughed them out of the room. As the Tribe benefited from the university.
I’m curious as to what other fans think of the newest changes, looks, and designs? Also the rules. We had a stretch where the NFL wouldn’t allow different helmets to be used. So only throwback jerseys could be used. I thought that was a foolish/idiotic idea. IF you are utilizing a throwback uniform? You HAVE to use the helmet from that specific jersey! Now the questions…. First one, should there ALWAYS be a game or games where teams use throwback looks. My answer….YES. Second one, Which team is your favorite and which helmet/jersey from that team do your like to see it use? Mine team is the Packers and they’ve used basically the same jersey for ages which is okay. They have a classic design! I also like the Bills, and the classic white helmet and the 1974-75, 76 logo is pretty damn awesome! The Jets🛫✈🛩🛬 are another classic looking team. I love the 70’s look they have as well. Their 80’s green Jets look was simple Jets across a green helmet. Another winner. For me any Jets uniform is good. Again what’s your opinions? Also the Creamsicle 🟧⬜white⚪&🟠orange🍊Buccaneer, do you prefer that or the newer version? I like the classic 70’s & 80’s orange and white. Oh and I KNOW I’m probably only one of a SMALL GROUP who actually likes the 1975 ||\\\\|| sorry I couldn’t do the 75 NY Giants disco look. Which I actually liked. I thought it had a unique look and it was cool?
BTW, my Cowboys did not use player nameplates until 1970 and in a move that really pissed me off, beginning with the Cowboys GREATEST UNIFORM in 1981 they began to put the players number on the hip of the pants. Sadly not only did Jimmy Johnson get rid half of our great receiver corps from 1988 …..a move screwing over Troy, but he got rid of the hip numbers too
