QAnon is an unfounded conspiracy theory that claims President Trump is waging a secret war against elite Satan-worshipping paedophiles in government, business, and the media. The term refers to a set of internet conspiracies that falsely claim the world is run by a cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles. The theory originated from 4chan message boards in October 2017, where conspiracy adherents believed that President Trump and Robert Mueller were saving the world from cannibal pedophiles.
The baseless core of the QAnon story is that the Mueller investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia is actually an investigation into global elites. More than a dozen 2020 U.S. House and Senate candidates have engaged with the collection of conspiracy theories known as QAnon, with at least two of them centered around an anonymous source, Q, who is trying to tell the world about a secret battle being waged by Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller.
Pew Research Center surveys show that Americans have heard about the QAnon conspiracy theories and their views about them. At least 24 US political candidates have supported a conspiracy that claims liberals are harvesting children’s blood. A survey of cases of individuals who have allegedly or apparently been radicalized to criminal acts with a nexus to violence by QAnon, including a pro-Trump wellness influencer and a suburban Democrat, highlights the spread of this conspiracy theory.
