Why is Missouri’s animal a mule?

In 1995, Governor Mel Carnahan designated the Missouri Mule as the official state animal. The mule, a hybrid of a mare and a jack, was introduced to Missouri in the 1820s and became popular due to its strength and hardiness. Missouri was known as the “gateway to the West” and was often the location where immigrants bought and filled wagons, often pulled by mules, that would take them westward. The high demand for the hardy animal led to the development of larger draft mules.

Missouri was the nation’s premier mule producer for decades, with 45 percent of farmers involved in the use or breeding of mules. Breeding mules was a lucrative side business for many farmers, and the mule played a critical role during both World Wars in moving troops and supplies. However, new technology diminished the mule’s importance, and by 1940, the tractor had largely replaced the mule on family farms. The term “Missouri Mule” was coined at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

The Amur tiger, also known as the Siberian tiger, is one of the world’s largest cats. Both the Amur tigers and leopards are critically endangered in Russia due to human activities such as poaching, development, and conflict situations. WildCats support government agencies and NGO partners in managing conflict, rehabilitation, and reintroducing injured or orphaned tigers into remote areas where big cats have become extinct.

Research shows that human-caused mortality accounts for 75-85% of all Amur tiger deaths, with an estimated 30 tigers killed each year. To protect the fragile wild population, rigorous anti-poaching methods, such as SMART, are essential.

Why Mizzou antlers?

The Antlers, a group of students at the University of Missouri, gained their name from a dance they performed during a basketball game. The dance resembled a skit from a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, where Lily Tomlin danced with her hands at her side, fingers outstretched like antlers. The Antlers, inspired by the skit, performed the dance during their first game as an official group. They drew attention to the Antler dance during the Missouri Waltz and continue to perform it today.

In 2003, the Antlers prank called KU coach Roy Williams at his home before a Missouri-Kansas game. They also made large signs with players’ names and phone numbers. On March 9, 2003, during a nationally televised game, the Antlers greeted KU players at the hotel with signs reading “Plane Crash”, in reference to Nick Collison’s senior day speech, where he talked about his grandfather, a World War II veteran, who had a plane crash during D-Day but survived.

LSU has been using seven live tigers as its mascot since 1936, with most living in cramped conditions. The current tiger, a Siberian-Bengal mix named Mike VII, lives in a 14, 000-square-foot compound near the school’s basketball stadium and Tiger Stadium, one of the loudest college football venues in the country.
