He was initially created as the mascot for a restaurant proposed by Nolan Bushnell in 1977. When he bought a costume that appeared to be a coyote, it was discovered to be a rat with a long pink tail and larger than the final product.

Bushnell decided to change the restaurant’s name to Rick Rat’s Pizza, but his group of planners decided on Chuck E. Cheese for the mascot and changed the restaurant’s name to Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre.

The rat mascot was originally given a New Jersey accent and told jokes, sometimes holding a cigar. His voice was delivered by John Widelock for the first seven years, then by Scott Wilson. In 1993, Duncan Brannan was hired as the new voice of the mascot, who transformed him from a rat to a mouse. By 1994-1995, the mouse was given a more child-friendly makeover, with a wider cheek structure, a less pointy, shorter snout, longer eyes, smaller ears, and a slimmer physique. The character began being characterized as a skateboarder in commercials from 1997, with this appearance starting to appear in restaurants by 2004.

  • This is interesting information about Chuck E. I like all the versions of him. I’m familiar with the second and third version. Also, I’ve been to Chuck E. Cheese’s when I was little! I had great times there. There’s one in my town and it has changed a little. I heard that the animatronics there were removed because people found them creepy. But I never did. In fact, I got on stage with them and acted like an animatronic.
