  • Initially I was with AJ and thought the 6 sided ring made TNA so unique and special but after listening to many veteran wrestlers like Sting and Kurt I understand why from a performers stand point the 6 sided ring provides more difficulties to work around. Kurt has also gone on record saying taking a flat back bump on a 4 sided ring was much smoother than in the 6 sided one so I get their perspective as well

  • I can’t lie. As a kid growing up, I watched WWE a lot. I was into it 2006-2008. To this day, I still see AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, and Bobby Roode, as I did back then. TNA during that time period was just so good. It was so slept on. Also side note, favorite heel tag team outside of WWE literally ever… BEER MONEY!!!!!

  • I remember reading that the six sided ring was harder to work in and guys got hurt more (maybe on the ropes because there was less give in them due to the shorter distance between turnbuckles?). If it badly affected health, then it’s good they got rid of it. Other than that, I completely agree with AJ that it gave TNA a different more sports-like look.

  • I think the six-sided ring works best with cruiserweights, since they are the highlight of AAA where it came from, and the X Division was the highlight of Impact back when it was called TNA under Jarrett’s management. However, heavyweights can also capitalize on the unusual environment of the six-sided ring by tweaking their moves a bit, like Monty Brown’s Pounce.

  • From these iconic wrestlers : AJ Styles, Sting, Jeff Jarrett, ODB, Mickie James, Tara, Bully Ray, Jeff Hardy, Christopher Daniels, The Beautiful People, Samoa Joe, Austin Aries and recently Johnny Impact To : Tessa Blanchard, Sami Callihan, The Crist Brothers, Brian Cage, Rich Swann, Kiera Hogan, Ace Austin, Jordynnne Grace, Taya Valkyrie, Willie Mack, Moose, Killer Kross, Eddie Edwards… Impact never missed a step. (Btw they have the best women’s division in the world)

  • I loved the look of the 6 sided ring. It looked more like what WRESTLING should have. (Amateur wrestling is done in a circle.) But I totally get Sting’s point – for the guys who had been wrestling in the squared circle for 10-20 years it must have been really disorienting and made it harder to execute some moves.

  • The six-sided ring in TNA… I loved it. It was new, it helped the promotion set itself apart from other companies, and i think it allowed more creativity in matches, particularly for the X-Division. I get why people prefer the traditional four sided ring (I personally do), but the six-sides worked perfectly for TNA.

  • One other thing about the six-sided ring that I don’t know if they mentioned in this full segment, but I’ve heard AJ mention in other interviews, is that the six-sided ring is a LOT more rigid than the squared-circle. What I mean by that is that, when you take a bump and hit the ring, the typical squared-circle actually has a little bit more GIVE than the six-sided ring. But I fully agree with AJ Styles that the six-sided ring was one factor that definitely helped put TNA on the map.

  • Amazing article!!! And I bet that neither of these 3 know that the idea of the 6 sided ring came from the mexican luchador Heavy Metal….he gave the idea in Triple A and when the company made a deal to work with TNA back in the day thats when TNA adopted the concept that grew as one of the main things that distinguished the company from any other.

  • The mid 2000s is when TNA was hot i was perusal tna and wwe and never looked at tna as the less talented promotion i was always excited perusal it because it gave you something different and new with wrestling weekly and had great wrestlers some of my favorites from there so people need to respect TNA TOTAL NONSTOP ACTION THEY LIVED THAT FOR A WHILE

  • AJ does have a point, it did make TNA stand out and I personally liked how it shook up the dynamic of the in ring action. JBL used to do a set up spot where he’d irish whip people hard into the corner, they’d stumble back out off the impact and he’d run the diagonally opposite ropes and launch into a shattering CFH. It’s a spot I really liked and the 6 sided ring allowed for similar.

  • Back when I was wrestling I had the opportunity to work a 6 sided ring. At first it was a huge culture shock, but I came to enjoy it. I found certain spots with more running flowed better in a 6 sider, and though the wider angle meant I had to relearn balancing the top rope, I found I could weirdly do more in the corner as we had more room in the corners. I still vastly prefer what I did over the years in a square ring but 6 sides, once i was actually used to it was super fun.

  • I agree with AJ. I started perusal TNA because they were different. The X-Division with AJ, Chris Sabin, Petey Williams, Austin Aries, Alex Shelley, Sonjay Dutt, Jay Lethal, etc is what made TNA special! They were constantly pushing the envelope and doing innovative things. Then came Sting, Hulk Hogan, Ric, Scott Halls, and the backstage politics, lengthy promos, and cookie cutter matches.

  • The 6 sided ring is what made TNA stand out from other promotions. It was different. For me, it took some getting used to at first. But seeing how they had different angles to hit moves, I changed my way of thinking. Not to mention, the 6 sided ring were their best times. Once they killed the 6 sided ring, it killed any momentum that TNA had. I wouldn’t mind seeing it return.

  • The 6 sided ring (though done in AAA) was one of the key reasons TNA at the time was different/ alternative to what other wrestling products were. I understand where Sting being a Vet and legend is coming from but that ring was one of the ways the company stood out among the rest. The 6 sided ring was a BIG part of TNA’s Identity and was the first thing you see when you first turn on the product. Your mind starts racing on “how these wrestlers are going to use this?” So I totally agree with AJ Styles and even Jarrett Said they got a TOY deal off the ring alone. Wrestling has always thrived on being innovative and that ring was definitely something that you noticed almost instantly when you were perusal TNA at that time.

  • I remember someone was saying that they dropped the six sided ring because of how hard the canvas was due to the way it was elongated from each corner and taking a bump feels like hitting concrete floor, I guess what they should of done is to find a real solution in making it softer as appose to scrapping it because a lot of people in the back complained how stiff and hard the surface was.

  • A six-sided ring does create a totally different feel for a wrestling match- it makes the ring symmetrical, more rounded, more an ACTUAL circle or “ring” than the “squared circle” which is actually a rectangle. It affects the way you can shoot it with a camera, although it would also make it harder for a viewer to find a concrete spatial alignment for following the match. It would certainly change the way you run the ropes- two wrestlers can’t run at right angles to each other for a criss-cross or the setup to a pounce, and the corners are also much wider open, giving you less of a confined feeling when a wrestler gets trapped in a corner. The shape of a ring makes a bigger difference to a wrestling match than you might think- for example, the WCW ring was considerably smaller than the WWE one, which made all the wrestlers standing inside it look bigger by comparison.

  • The six sided ring was awesome I used to love perusal it! From 2013 to 2015 timeframes could be slightly wrong I watched tna totally instead of any wwe I just had enough and have only now slowrlu stated getting back into wwe it’s not the same as post 2010 but it’s a lot better than it was for a while!

  • I remember flicking through the stations and seeing wrestling in a six sided ring and I just had to leave it on because I thought it was so odd. Got hooked from that first time. At this time I only had eyes for WWE and wouldn’t entertain any other company. My teenage mind was blown with some of the stuff TNA put on back then.

  • They cut that off early. AJ went on to say that the 6 sided ring was a lot stiffer then the normal ring and he ended up liking the normal ring because it was easier on the body so he did in the end like the normal ring over the 4 sided over the 6 but like the six because of the difference in the look to the fans.

  • I always hated the six sided ring. When Hulk Hogan got rid of it I was stoked.. On the other hand, it was a very unique gimmick in the US. TNA definitely caught some fire because of it’s unique approach to professional wrestling. Whether it was 6 sides or 4 sides, I really miss the old TNA Wrestling.

  • If it wasn’t for the six-sided ring, I most likely would’ve never started perusal TNA. I remember seeing commercials for their weekly PPVs and their ring just blew my mind. It got my attention because it was different and I was SO STOKED when I heard they were coming to SpikeTV. To be #1 in this industry, you’ve got to do whatever it takes to stand out… don’t do what the other guys are doing. “… Everybody’s doin’ what everybody’s doin’ Everybody’s doin’ the same thing I’ll be doin’ what I’ll be doin’ I’ll be doin’ my thing The world spins ’round to the right they say I’ll be spinnin’ the other way …” Unfortunately, TNA dropped the ball BIG TIME. I’ll never understand how they allowed themselves to fall so far. They’ll never again be as hot as they were from 2009 – 2011.

  • They are probably more comfortable bringing up TNA because: 1. Most of the notable TNA talent is in WWE now. 2. The TNA name is a relic of the past. Even though most hardcore fans know that IMPACT = TNA, they can outwardly talk about old TNA without having to name-check their “competition” in IMPACT. 3. Having Jeff Jarrett probably helps now that IMPACT has been under new management for a while.

  • the six sided ring made things different, more real like aj said BUT for performers it was a nightmare cause it was very hard and bumps on that thing really hurt. but the wrestling style what is now common in todays tv started in the indys and tna aswell. back then tna was a good alternative to wwe. but it all started downhill when aj and joe got sidelined…

  • I loved the six sided ring, but I also remember talents like Austin Aires (who I don’t think we’ll see interviewed on this website in the near future) saying that it was “unsafe” for workers. Can’t remember exactly why, maybe it had to do with ropes’ tension or something like that. Six sides stand out for sure. Love to see TNA references on the WWE network.

  • I can’t remember who it was but I remember one ex TNA talent saying that running the ropes absolutely killed on the 6 sided ring because they were tighter due to there being less space between the turnbuckles. That said, it was a pretty genius way to grab someone’s attention who was just website hopping

  • I loved TNA when they had the 6 sided ring. I love Hulk Hogan, but once he came in that company went way down hill. Not saying its his fault, but it was around that time it went down hill and way down hill after he left. I liked seeing Hulk in TNA. Sting was one of the only reasons I watched TNA. I always loved him. He’s fun to watch.

  • In 2006 TNA was far more interesting due to the 6 sided ring and the X-division with AJ etc … as well as the two tunnel entrances (one for the heels and one for the faces) made it look like a cooler fighting experience all together…. and in the middle of all this AJ Styles X-Division glory you had “the politician wannabe Hogan”-Jarret which Sting beat up… and every now and again there was a black out and the hardcore version of the undertaker aka Abyss would make his entrance with evil Father James Mitchel …. it felt like a good mix of the old and the new. But then they removed the new…. 🙁

  • I have tremendous love and respect for Sting, don’t get me wrong, but this is exactly what is wrong with older generations. They’re way too focused on what is “traditional” that they don’t realize that the earth revolves, meaning things change and that “traditional” nonsense might not work anymore. I loved the six sided ring back in the day, it was cool and unique.

  • What The Heck Is AJ Talking About? He has said in interviews that he hated working that 6 sided ring. He said it was like landing on cinder blocks taking anything off the ropes. He actually said that it was like landing on a bed the first time he took a superplex in a regular ring after that. I was expecting Sting to say he was the one that liked it.

  • no wonder i always liked aj styles, we even have the same opinion towards that. i agree with him, when TNA removed the six sided ring i lost interest and stoped perusal it. it’s like he says that made them unique and i loved it, sad the old icons didn’t get used to it. ps kudos to WWE for showing TNA stuff
