She has visible horns, blue blood, and an extraordinary ability to pilot giant robots known as Franxx, which she must do with a male copilot. While she is not autistic, some fans on the Internet believe she could be. It is possible that one of the writers is neurodivergent or close to someone who is.
What type of girl is Zero Two?
Zero Two, an elite pilot from APE’s special forces, is a mysterious and rebellious girl known as the “partner killer” due to her red horns and klaxosaur blood. She is inspired by a book called “The Beast and the Prince” and tries to become fully human to reunite with Hiro.
Zero Two discovers she is a clone of the Klaxosaur Princess created by Dr. Franxx. When Hiro is forced to link with the princess, she mentally connects with Strelizia to save him and stop VIRM from destroying the planet. However, this leaves her body catatonic. Mentally, she continues fighting VIRM in a galactic battle in space, allowing her to merge with Strelizia, becoming the Strelizia True Apus, and overpower the VIRM.
Zero Two and Hiro part ways with their friends but promise to return. In the final episode, they sacrifice themselves to destroy the VIRM home planet and free the souls trapped by VIRM. At some point in the future, they are reincarnated into two children.
Several merchandising action figures based on Zero Two have been announced, including a Nendoroid brand, Kotobukiya and S. H. Figuarts figures.
What does zero 2 call darling?
Zero Two, also known as Code:002 and 9’℩, is a fictional character in the Japanese anime television series Darling in the Franxx. She is an artificially-created life form who aspires to become fully human and is an elite pilot known as the “Partner Killer”. Zero Two is known for addressing Hiro, the protagonist, by the eponymous term “darling”. She is also known for her infamous reputation as the “Partner Killer”. Zero Two was designed as the most prominent character and icon of the series, and her infamous reputation as the “Partner Killer” is a testament to her humanity and her ability to overcome adversity.
What is Zero Two’s real name?
Hiro frees 002 from a tree branch, but he loses consciousness after falling. 002 swallows a mouse and bites Hiro, but she regrets her actions and realizes she understands him. Hiro names her Zero Two, and they learn about the outside world and sweets. Zero Two wants Hiro to read her “The Beast and the Prince” story and becomes fascinated with it.
When their runaway is interrupted by adults, Hiro is hit with a gun and falls to the ground. The adults erase their memories, but they notice some fragments that can be difficult to erase from Zero Two. After being separated, Hiro is brought back to the Garden without her memory. Zero Two vows to kill many klaxosaurs to become fully human. She becomes a special pistil and works for APE on the frontlines, wanting to be the ultimate weapon to defeat klaxosaurs.
Zero Two changes her partner three times, as most Stamen partnered with her died after riding with her three times. Two years before the series begins, Zero Two recklessly piloted with Squad 26, resulting in 090’s partner dying. Due to her actions and lack of empathy, 090 holds grudges and hatred towards her.
Is Zero Two a Gemini?
Zero Two, a Scorpio, is known for her determination and ability to overcome obstacles, including the other Parasites and Hiro himself. She can also be dangerous. Ikuno, Mitsuru’s partner, is portrayed as intelligent and reserved, often expressing her emotions in a sarcastic manner. She is also known for her sharp tongue and knowledge of certain topics, unlike the other Parasites. The anime sidesteps the topic of Ikuno’s feelings for Ichigo.
Who is Zero Two crush?
Zero Two, a human-klaxo sapien hybrid, is the main heroine and deuteragonist of DARLING in the FRANXX. As an elite Parasite with the codename “002”, she has always accepted solitude due to her horns and Klaxosaur blood. Despite her lack of regard for human life, she takes interest in Hiro and offers him the opportunity to pilot with her, making him her new partner and “darling”. After riding together more than three times, they become the 13th Plantation’s newest members, piloting the powerful FRANXX Strelizia.
Zero Two’s animalistic determination to become fully human and Hiro’s fear of her increasing feral characteristics cause their relationship to drift apart. When their relationship begins to crumble, they realize their forgotten memories from their childhood meeting and decide to sacrifice their lives to ensure humankind’s survival. A thousand years later, Hiro and Zero Two’s souls reincarnate as children, meeting each other again and rekindling their romance.
Why does Zero Two have red around her eyes?
Zero Two, a Parasite, has a dangerous, cold, and attractive personality due to her aggressive riding. She is an elite pilot with the alias “Partner Killer” due to the mysterious deaths of her co-pilots after just three sorties. However, she is playful towards Hiro and sometimes shows humor, even during their first meeting.
Zero Two prioritizes her Parasite duty above all else, as she wants to “become human”. She is a valuable military asset to the APE and fought on the front lines for so long that she didn’t consider human life or her own. When people around her die, she doesn’t bat an eyelid, as it is just a fact of life that everyone dies.
Zero Two is naughty, passionate, short-tempered, self-confident, smug, pushy, and carefree. She hates to follow rules set by adults and is outspoken and honest. Her seemingly carefree rule breaking helps Hiro out of his severe depression and blind rule following, and her hilarious affection inspired other Squad 13 parasites to be more affectionate with each other.
Zero Two’s behavior is childish, as evidenced by wiping her hands on Zorome’s uniform. She has impressive agility, performing somersaults and landing on her feet each time. During the feud between the girls and boys, she tricked the girls into believing she would cooperate with them and tricked the boys into going to the girls when they were bathing. Pursued by Hiro, she teased and laughed at him as she ran around the house, feeling a little more human.
Zero Two also has strange quirks, such as eating with her hands, often licking people like herself, having a dangerous taste for Hiro, Ichigo, and Ikuno, and reflecting on her desire to take a dip in the ocean, dipping her food in honey, and having no sense of personal space.

Darling in The Franxx has been suprising me. At first I thought it would be just another mecha show with a little bit of ecchi, but then it started focusing on the development of the characters and in this utopian misterious society. I’m so happy that they’re showing that Zero Two is not just a pretty prodigy girl, she has a story, a past, that molded her into this persona. She sure is carismatic and beautiful, but she’s not just it, she’s flawlled and tormented, insecure and impulsive, and that’s what makes her feel more like someone we could indentify with. About the episode and its beautiful story: I was just so happy that Hiro remembered Zero Two, I hope that now he can fall in love with her again <3
Zero Two is a very heart breaking character if u watch the series carefully and understand her past. She grew up with no love, no friends, no family, exposed to painful experiments and torture as a child, she was always lied to by dr.franxx and the apes, groomed to be a weapon, her own brothers and sisters, the elite 9s didnt even like her, had the love of her life beaten and taken away from her and she concluded he was dead. During episode 15-19. Seeing her legitly happy touched my heart. You could of told she was faking her happiness in the previous episodes, her smiles were fake, she was trying soo hard to be a human and fit in, to be accepted. But when she reunited with her darling, Hiro and squad 13 finally accepting, treating and loving her as one of their own really… gave her all she deserved, she was robbed of all these qualities as a child. Its really sad seeing her purely happy for once for it to be cut short by Virm and her death
The whole “reverting to a monster and being scared of not being accepted” thing is way off base I think. Her physical changes are not the problem, they are symptoms of the actual problem: the stress of her own inner conflict and guilt. Some speculation ahead but I think it’s self-consistent. She’s actually truthfully grown fond of Hiro, but she has to use him in order to find darling. His nice gift leaves her disgusted with herself for doing this to him, so she shuts down. Lashes out. Tries to get him to dislike her. It’d be easier that way. He’s just another stamen. Just fodder. Those feelings aren’t real, can’t be allowed to be real, because he’s not darling. Notice the next scene after she forces herself on him she’s in the shower, clutching her chest. It pained her to do that to him. When she specter-chokes Hiro, look at her face. She doesn’t want this, but she has no choice. Gotta turn human and find darling. She was already crying before he even mentioned the picture book. In the whole of Ep14, she’s wracked with guilt. She could easily toss everyone aside and force her way to Hiro, but she wants their approval, because despite herself she’s grown fond of them too (while locked in her room she likens herself to the beast from the story, unable to fit in with the humans after all). Probably. Okay this one’s flimsier but I like to think it’s true because I want awkward 02 apologies to the gang once the big mission is over with.
I think it’s a good ending for Zero Two since at the end Hiro and hers souls get into that bracelet when they show reincarnated children Hiro and ZeroTwo holding hands in the end. So… What do you think, do I got the right point? Oh and I forgot to mention that she died happy with her darling… My bad 😁
This is why i think Zero Two became so distant and non caring at one point This is how i see it. Its pretty messy i know. It could be that in the start when she was more happy and positive she thought that it was her original darling and tested if he remembered by recreating childhood memories for an example the “say aaaa” thing and in ep 13 the word that was blocked in the “dream” i guess or idk was it blocked i atleast just heard “ill be your da”(he would have said i will be your darling) and she said that she wanted to escape with him cuz he promissed that as a child or something, she was trying to test if he remembered her, and she was just so happy but when he didnt seem to remember she got depressed and bit her fingers and then she just started to kill klaxos with all her mind on it cuz she thought that it wasnt her darling and that she would just focus on becoming a human and then search her darling. So what i mean: start. 02 finds her darling, tries to confirm it by recreating memories, Hiro doesnt remember, 02 thinks that its the wrong person, gets depressed and just wants to kill klaxos to be human and find her true darling and uses Hiro (SHE WASNT USING HIM FROM THE START) realises that he is her darling(after (“using him”), regrets, tries to tell it, Ichigo doesnt let that happen cuz she want Hiro for herself. And the feelings of 02 are described in the opening songs lyrics it was something like ” i tried to block out the bangging on my door (she feels like he found her darling but he doesnt remember anything and she feels bad for using him after she thought that he isnt her darling cuz he feels like him and she starts biting her fingers) and it continues like”are you the one or is it someone else she is clearly trying to figure out is he rly her darling.
I completed this series a few months ago. This question suddenly popped up in my mind. The way you have explained it is so good. I literally cried over this . This anime would be the best if it had a good ending. The opening song (kiss of death) is perfectly connected to the plot of anime. ( I recommend you to see it translation) it is perfect . Emotions, feelings and desperate try to get her darling is shown perfectly in the song. I wish it had a good ending 😭
You analyzing ditf makes me happy because I feel like finally someone starts to understand it like I do and you do that great my friend. Definitely earned my sub and my support from Germany All in all Ditf became one of my favorite anime and probably top 5 all time. I watched it in less 24 hours and it was the best thing I could’ve done. I just love Darling in the Franxx
Good analysis overall, but i think there’s a few things i think you’re missing. I think zero two has been heavily conflicted about hiro from in these episodes. This conflict stems from the opposing feelings of feeling like hiro was not her darling from her childhood, and her growing affection for current hiro. She feels like she’s loosing track of her mission to become human and meet her original darling, that the feelings she has for hiro are going to doom her to never becoming human and never meeting and being with her original darling and being happy. It’s worth noting that by episode 12, she very likely feels fairly certain that hiro isn’t her darling from her childhood, as he’s failed basically every little test she’s given him at various times throughout the series. This is compounded by the mirror, where we can see her fangs and horns, the things she associates with her being a klaxosaur, are growing, meaning she’s not becoming more physically human, which is extremely important for her, for reasons i’ll touch on later. I also don’t think zero two tries to have sex with hiro simply as a cynical response to hiro’s confession, but possibly out of desperation for some form of comfort after the awful tests she’s just been under. Remember, she’s been putting these tests off for as long as she possibly can, since the flashback in episode 7 in the scene with hiro, alpha, her, and franxx, and looking at the flashback to her childhood in episode 13, we can get a sense of what these tests were.
This is the reason why the first half of the anime was sooo good! The development for 02 and the rest of her team was amazing. The characters did not feel like cardboard copies from other shows. Trigger really took the time to build each character from the ground up. Everything when down hill once A-1 pictures took over. A-1 ignore the foundation Trigger created which was what made Darling in the Fraxx special and introduce plot twist after plot twist with little to no regards for the pacing of the story and the characters just for the sake of unrealistic ideals for the brainless audience.
Forgive me if this seems a little stupid but I think she may have gone insane because she cant deal with the thought of losing Hiro so she then decides it would just be best to let go of him and then she starts to get extremely caught up in if I become human everything will change and everything will be different
Things really went to hell in episode 14, but I think it also hinted at another factor to Zero Two’s breakdown. We get a glimpse of her relationship with the Nines as they have bunch of men from their squad already lined up for her to use however she wants. They have been giving Zero Two stamens by the boatload like livestock to the slaughter, and she has been consuming them like an addictive drug. Since she couldn’t devour Hiro the same way she could the other pilots, she probably didn’t reach the same “high” with him and slowly started going into a kind of withdrawal. Her symptoms thereof could be attributed to accelerating her deterioration at an exponential rate. What started as a means to an end has been consuming her in the long run and, over many years and hundreds of pilots, has become a contradictory necessity for her to remain functional. We’ll have to wait for episode 15 to see if this theory holds up or not.
I think this was a very well done analysis on how Zero Two became distant and treated him like fodder. I love how you connected the pieces together from the episodes to make a reasonable and methodical explanation. I personally have overlooked the majority of the reasons, mainly including her going to the library to find her picture book, I thought the creators of the anime were just giving her a reason to lash out at Hiro. But you connected it in much deeper ways than I did.
So zero two didn’t really love hiro at the beginning? So her plan was always to kill him? Since that’s what happens to all her partners right? But idk I’m confused can someone explain ig her plan was to kill him until she found out hiro was actually her darling from when they were kids so really zero two had been using hiro from the very first time they rode a klaxosaur together right
I’ve noticed that after Zurome stole the Klax kill she started changing noticable. I agree after looking at the mirror that seems to be when she started to revert and become a lot colder her reflection being a reminder of what her original objective was leasing her to reject Hiro. It was great when she changed right after learning who Hiro really was. This was a great breakdown
This is a pretty indepth article of her mental spiral. However i would like to point out that her monstrous features seem to be linked to her psychological state. the further down the rabbit hole she goes the more distinct her monstrous features get. I would like to point out that during episode six, where hiro got his- ass knocked out from the strain of piloting with her and zero two is getting overwhelmed by the klaxosaur, her horns are extremely long, her eyes blood red, and her nails have lengthened into claws. she was in a feral, unhinged state.
Thank you for this 2018 explanation. This is the best article I have seen so far on this Anime. I love it even more than before because of your article. It truly is the best anime I have ever seen. If they do make a second season or movie, I really hope they will keep to the integrity of this beautiful masterpiece.
1:04 what you said here. I think that she did this before when they were in the city the first time. She said to Hiro that they could run away together. That she could get him out of there. Thats exactly what Hiro said to her back then. She was already trying to figure out if Hiro was her darling. I think thats also why she said just kidding after saying it because Hiro didnt remember her so he didnt say anything.
I think this could even be taken all the way back to whenever he first hides from her whenever she almost killed Mitsuru, it almost looks like she notices he’s there. Plus she goes into the bathroom asking him to run away with her, kinda like she was looking for confirmation that he’s her original darling. I’m not 100% sure on the episode order but I think this was before anything you mentioned
Her frustration comes from not knowing if Hiro is gonna remember her. Kinda feel that zero two knew he was his darling all the time but she knew that her darling without memories, is just half of what he truly is, hes incomplete, the series will always mirror that incomplete halves like the one winged bird thing… He needs her to remember. So the the moment whe she hugs him and tells him that they will always be together means that zero two is realizing that meybe her darling will never remember her so the only thing she can do is to painfully keep it till the end; her frustration comes from not knowing if Hiro is gonna remember her. That means she’s facing the idea that she could never be with the darling she has been looking for. Thats why she cant answer to hiro about how she really feels.
I just watched this a little while ago (the whole series, not just the episode) and I’m not gonna lie, I fell in love with the show… like, I’m going back and perusal the dub so that it still has a “newness” to it, but this was the second (third?) anime I ever watched, and only 24 episodes broke my heart.
I haven’t actually watched Darling in the Franxx so I have little to no clue as to what is going on, but it seems legit. Tbh quintessential quintuplets is doing fine for me so far, just trying to find something with more episodes/more frequent uploads/ already finished so I can just grind. Any recommendations? Ill probably watch darling in the franxx thanks to this, but im relatively bored otherwise. Btw, nice article as usual. It makes someone like me, who hasn’t even watched the series, understand what is going on, and become intrigued by it.
Watching this as I am prepping for a larger scale fanfic I wanna write (mostly for my own enjoyment and because I hated how so many of breadcrumbs the first 17 episodes places who went fully ignored in the ending); I very much liked this article… but.. I think there’s an even earlier moment where Zero Two starts to slowly doubt and then give up on Hiro. In Episode 3, “Fighting Puppet” – I think that’s where it is, they look over the dead, immortal city, Zero Two turns around to ask him: “Darling, do you… wanna run away with me?” She makes eye contact and specifically repeats the words of her Darling from her childhood next: “I can get you out of here.” She waits for him to react, but as he does not, she just… lets the wind slowly blow her over before catching herself and hopping back. As he didn’t react to her comment, she plays it off as having only been joking. She’s been testing him since she tasted him by that lake for the first time (one of the breadcrumbs I am upset they started, then dropped: Her enhanced senses).
I’m way late but who cares Anyway, as I respect and totally understand your point of view, during Zero Two’s mental breakdown, she said “So you’re my darling from back then”, or, something along the lines of that. This obviously concludes she had not known that Hiro was the boy from her childhood. The point of Hiro being her darling was to use him, to become human for the boy, which only happened to be Hiro.
Rewatching the show, starting in episode 1, 02 says hints throughout the episodes when talking to Hiro, but he does not catch on, and she stars getting frustrated that he isn’t responding, which makes her doubt that he is her past Darling. But two questions, a.) Did 02 recognize the name “Hiro” when Ichigo said it? b.) Should 02 remember that her Darling had his memories erased too?
kokoro gets curious, and things get spucy, butit did make me think, that blonde in the elete squad said “are you going through puberty?” when nana went through the weird headaches. so, even the ones that look like adults are still KIDS? and whn kokoro finds that book, it shows that things are getting downhill, cause the rules PAPA set are starting to break, thus the danger of children
It’s really not hard to explain. Zero Two, an artificially-created human-klaxosaur hybrid, was raised as nothing more than a science experiment and considered a weapon, and was confined to a basically neglected prison cell when she wasn’t being either painfully experimented on or piloting a giant robot. Take that for 10 years and yeah, it totally explains her. But if you’re talking about how she began to really break down after meeting (or rather, re-meeting) Hiro, then yeah, this nails it.
Oh. I thought the 9s set her off but apparently this all happened before the 9s were introduced. Just rewatched. The 9s did not help at all. 4:30 is wrong in hindsight. We learn she doesn’t take the life force of her copilots. Zero Two did not look more human in episode 15 even after devouring the line up of at least 10 men. If they’re what keep her red skin and fangs from growing out, then Hiro does a better job of making her look more human than all of them, and Hiro starts to look more Klaxo since he gets his own horns. So it’s not that she devours them, rather copiloting causes damage to the pilots as they somehow link to klaxo dna. Only hiro can handle it since he ingested her blood when he was younger or maybe due to her feelings towards him. Also we learn later that she was told killing klaxosaurs turns her more human which is why she obsesses over killing them in e12.
instead of season two. they should remake ep 20-24 and completely get rid of the alien plotline and make it the 9s vs squad 13. where they side with the clasasawrs and maybe with one of the minor squad 13 characters dies. and once squad 13 wins they overthrow papa and rebuild the civilization with hiro and 002 on earth still aswell.
The sad news is that i havent watch darling in the franxx full movie it doesn’t meant that i don’t want to watch it but the problem is I can’t find full movie all i can do is watch all the trailers and shed a tears on my eyes, so i would like to ask you a favour too, please upload full movies without cutting out anything in all the movies and yes no restrictions, i enjoyed a lot, please upload more romantic articles, thats the part i love in anime….. Thank you very much
Your points are solid but it goes to a way deeper psychological level for why she’s doing what she’s doing. At its core, this portion of DitF is a story about what it’s like to be in a relationship with a person suffering from mental health issues. Given her extraordinary traumatic childhood that was wrought with extreme physical and emotional neglect as well as extreme physical, menta and I would suspect sexual (as indicated by her extremely sexually aggressive nature and reaction to a total stranger seeing her nude) abuse her actions are completely in line with how a normal person would deal with that level of childhood trauma. Zero Two would certainly develop PTSD and codependency from these events and most likely Borderline Personality Disorder as well. All of these orbits a nonexistent sense of self worth/esteem. It would be so bad that she would view her self as less then human even if she was so that metaphor runs deep symbolically. People that struggle with these are impulsive and reckless, desperately craving a positive bond (i.e. darling) but become terrified the second one appears due to all there past caregivers being sources of pain and not love in there formative years. As a result the become emotional islands much as she was at the onset of the show. They expressed deep desires for attention by acting out unhealthily (like tightrope walking on beams or exacerbating the boys vs girls fight while claiming not to participate). If and when they do find a healthy relationship they will first become euphoric and metaphorically merge with a partner completely.
Zero Two: goes on a breakdown Also her: goes crazy on Hiro Ichigo: notices Also her: sepeeates Zero Two from Hiro forcibly Zero Two: demands to see her darling (Hiro) Everyone: allows under one condition Zero Two: agrees Everyone: brings her to the place (hospital ward) where her darling is resting and recovering Hiro: wasn’t there Zero Two: you’ve picked the wrong timing, idiots Hiro: appears out of nowhere Also him: sees what happens Zero Two: It was at this moment, she knew, she Fucked up Hiro: forgives her anyways. Well, not at once
But what I don’t understand in the first episode after zero two and Hiro first ride and then kill the klaxcasour they both come out and zero two tells I found you darling without knowing that he was her original darling (which is Hiro but she doesn’t know yet) and then in episode 5 zero two calls Hiro as her darling noting can separate us this is what I don’t understand
you deserve more views and subscribes, loved this article, you explained everything. I just have one more question, in episode 1 zero two said to Hiro “oh and i thought you were dead”, is there a deeper meaning in these words (like did she recognised who he really is from the first moment?), or she just threw a comment about Hiro’s reaction to her?
I watched this and thought “Well, this animation of Garrosh was probably from real cutscene right?” Looked it up and no, only the voice acting was. And That’s weird, this here is so good, not only the close up to his face, but also the punches fitting perfectly. Like really, this gets me pumped, and angry, I want to scream “For The Horde” with him. Amazing work on making the voice and animation match so well, they both improve on eachother.
