Braden Adkins, a junior economics major from Richwood, West Virginia, is the 70th Mountaineer mascot at West Virginia University (WVU). He is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Economics and plans to enter the WVU College of Law upon completion. The Mountaineer mascot has been a beloved tradition since 1934, with Mikel Hager serving as the mascot since April 21. Mary G. Roush, inspired by the passion and resilience of the first female Mountaineer Mascot, Natalie Tennant, will become the third female in nine decades to wear the mascot.
In February, Kimble was named the University’s 62nd official Mountaineer mascot. WVU’s Mountaineer mascot won the award for “Best College Live Human Program” in the 2022 National Mascot Hall of Fame awards. The Mountaineer mascot is one of the most cherished of all WVU athletic traditions.
The 69th WVU Mountaineer mascot, Mikel Hager, ceremonially passed the rifle to the incoming 70th Mountaineer mascot, Braden Adkins, at the Mountainlair Friday. Adkins, a junior economics major from Richwood, was named the 2024-25 Mountaineer mascot on March 2 during the men’s basketball game at WVU.
The Mountaineer mascot has been a beloved symbol of WVU since 1934, cheering on the team at major sports events and showing off around campus.
