What does a witch’s broom signify?
The broom, a symbol of protection and energy, is often used in everyday household cleaning by witches. The current version of a witch in pop culture is far removed from the Wicked Witch of the West. However, the stereotype of witches is not liked by actual witches. Lorraine Anderson, founder of The Spirit Guides blog and Spirit Element shop, explains that these “witchy” symbols are based on misinterpretations of biased people that have been diluted to cartoons and fantasy.
She believes that witches were traditionally healers and that these stereotypes damage modern-day witchcraft by painting the practice as either evil or undeserving of respect. The enduring stereotype of witches is not liked by actual witches.
Why shouldn’t you broom at night?
In Hindu mythology, certain habits should be avoided during the night to gain blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and knowledge. These bad habits can make the goddess unhappy and cause financial problems. Gurudev Shrie Kashyap, founder/chairman of All India Institute of Occult Science and True Vastu, suggests several things to avoid during the night for prosperity.
- Sleep with open hair or wash or comb hair at night. Negative energies remain around us after sunset, making it more susceptible to negative energies. Sleeping with open hair is considered inauspicious.
- Keep unwashed utensils in the kitchen at night. Dirty utensils can cause poverty and permanent debt. To invite Goddess Lakshmi into your house, keep the kitchen neat and clean.
- Donate milk, curd, salt, and sugar (mainly white things) to Lakshmi, as this may enrage her and lead to financial issues and instability.
- Do not cut nails and hair at night. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi enters the home at night, leaving dirt in the house, which is considered disrespectful.
- Do not clean your house during the night time. Morning broom sweeping is considered fortunate in Vastu Shastra.
- Do not wash or dry clothes at night. Negative energy enters clothing when it is spread out in the open sky after sunset. When clothes are dried in the sun, they lose their negative energy and gain a new, positive energy inside.
In conclusion, adhering to these practices can help bring blessings to oneself and others, ultimately benefiting both the family and the goddess.

I love reading everyone’s ideas. This came out beautiful. I love the idea of Harry Potter inspired food, or witchy shoes from what the other people are asking for. Or a cauldron or mini potions. Oh! A shrunken head with the hair sticking up using the jute twine for the hair. Anyway. Thank you for the article. I am going to try and make some of these for Halloween.
So so cute.. I need to make a few brooms for my little stuffed witch dolls. This was a good tutorial for it. I didn’t have jute string though, so I used actual straw pieces and didn’t paint them because they were already looking like real broom straw. They came out really great though so thanks for all the tips on how to make this.
Great job and so cute! If I make them I will drill a hole in the top of each one and thread them on a thin buna cord to wear as a simple pendant. I would really love to see a tutorial on witch shoes. I collect all things witchy and think it would be terrific to know how to make them. Thanks for the article!
