What Spells Do Amazing Monsters Use?

Newt Scamander, a beloved character in the Fantastic Beast franchise, is known for his love for magical creatures and his iconic case. In the first installment of Fantastic Beasts, he finds himself in numerous situations, including using verbal spells like Alohomora to get behind most doors, and limited spoken spells like Percival Graves’s nonverbal spells. The magical worlds are full of animals with magical abilities or needing wizard protection to shield from Muggle eyes.

The screenplays for Fantastic Beasts do not state what spells were used or colors, but it is expected that they will be revealed when the film is released. The film features both old and new magical creatures, some old (such as Newt’s bowtruckle Pickett) and some new ones.

Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston have different preferences for the wands used by Newt Scamander, with Eddie Redmayne preferring a simple wooden wand, Katherine Waterston preferring a heavier wand, and Colin Farrell even getting a practice wand to train. The film also includes advanced defensive/aggressive magic, such as Calvorio (Hair Loss Curse), Cantis Capacious extremis (Extension Charm), Carpe Retractum (Seize and Pull Charm), Cascading Jinx (Caterwauling Charm), Protego Diabolica (Protego Diabolica), Aberto (The Opening Charm), and Brachiabindo (The limb-binding jinx).

As the cast of Fantastic Beasts is beyond school age, there is no need for them to use verbal spells unless it is key to the plot. The magical worlds in the Harry Potter series are filled with creatures with magical abilities and needing wizard protection.

What is Dumbledore’s best spell?

Albus Dumbledore, the greatest wizard to ever live, is known for his powerful spells and magical feats. His most notable works include the Disillusionment Charm, which makes him virtually invisible without a cloak, and the Fidelius Charm, which protects 12 Grimmauld Place even after his death. Dumbledore also created a wall of fire to fend off Inferi, a remarkable feat. However, his true strength is often unknown, as he was never a POV character in the Harry Potter books.

This topic focuses on the most powerful spells used by Dumbledore, but it is unlikely to scratch the surface of his true strength. Dumbledore was particularly known for his skill at Charms and Transfiguration, and many of his most impressive work resulted in the creation of magical artifacts, such as his Deluminator. These accomplishments and his work in Potions are not the work of any particular spell but the result of research, theory, and his ingenuity.

What spell did Grindelwald use on Jacob?

In the story, the reanimated Qilin bowed to Grindelwald, making him the new Supreme Mugwump. Jacob was dragged into the middle by Grindelwald as an example, and he was cast as a Muggle who dared to fall in love with a witch. Grindelwald claimed this stained the magic blood and cast the Cruciatus Curse on Jacob. Santos stopped the curse, leaving Jacob in Queenie’s arms.

Newt pulled a second Qilin from a suitcase, and Grindelwald’s lie was revealed. The real Qilin bowed to Vicência, and a fight between Dumbledore and Grindelwald resulted in Grindelwald escaping. Jacob’s wedding to Queenie took place at Kowalski’s bakery in New York, attended by friends like Newt, Theseus, Lally, Bunty, and Tina. They stood in front of a wedding officiant and took their vows, becoming husband to Queenie. Albus Dumbledore watched them and their wedding from outside the store before leaving the street.

Was Avada Kedavra used in Fantastic Beasts?

In Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the killing curse rules are retconning due to the Qilin’s extraordinary magic abilities and the Dumbledore brothers’ protection spells. The Qilin’s mother is hit twice with the Avada Kedavra curse, but she doesn’t die immediately. The chase sequence with Newt and the newborn Qilin follows while the mother is still alive. The Harry Potter movies and books have previously established that the Avada Kedavra curse should cause instant death, so there shouldn’t be a need to cast a second curse.

At the end of Fantastic Beasts 3, Grindelwald attempts to use Avada Kedavra on Credence, but Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore successfully block it using golden magic. There are two possible explanations for the retconning of the killing curse rules in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. First, the Qilin’s extraordinary magic abilities could potentially delay the effects of the Avada Kedavra curse, albeit not prevent the outcome.

Second, the blocking of Grindelwald’s Avada Kedavra curse facilitates the destruction of the blood pack in a more satisfying and cinematic way than watching Dumbledore’s trial and error of spells back at Hogwarts.

Despite these in-universe explanations, the real reason for retconning the killing curse is likely down to the filmmakers serving the plot of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The drawn-out death of the Qilin provides Newt with a character to comfort her in the last moments and discover the second baby Qilin.

Is Queenie Bellatrix a Lestrange?

Bellatrix, a famous Lestrange from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is a member of Sirius Black’s family, a pure-blood group who punishes anyone who defies their rule. She is married to Rodolphus Lestrange, a fellow Death Eater and a Death Eater brother, Rabastan. They were all confined to Azkaban for the torture of Neville Longbottom’s parents. Leta’s lineage in the Lestrange family tree is unknown, but her lineage can be traced back to the 1920s in The Crimes of Grindelwald. Yusuf Kama, a French-African wizard, claims to be the last male member of his pure-blood line.

What spell does Leta Lestrange use?

In The Crimes Of Grindelwald, Leta Lestrange faces a painful past due to bullying and rumors of her being an unwanted child. She casts the dark charm Oscausi, sealing her mouth shut, which is undone by Minerva McGonagall. In the climax, Newt and his companions find the dark wizard in the Lestrange Mausoleum, Gellert, using the Elder Wand, casts the spell Protego Diabolica. This powerful spell manifests as a circle of black fire, causing allies to be burned to ash, including Leta Lestrange.

Gellert turns the spell into an offensive weapon, manifesting as a winged creature, and is only contained through the combined efforts of Newt, Theseus, Tina, Yusuf Kama, and Nicolas Flamel. The spell’s flames are blue in the movie, possibly for visual appeal.

Did Ron use Avada Kedavra on Nagini?

The Killing Curse is not confirmed to be Ron’s attempt to kill Voldemort’s snake, Nagini, with Avada Kedavra. In the movies, Ron is seen firing a green spell at the snake, which resembles the Curse. Harry had instructed Ron, Hermione, and Neville to kill Nagini before Voldemort could be defeated. The snake was attacking Ron and Hermione, giving Ron more reason to see it dead. Although Ron’s spell had no effect, it is likely due to defensive magic protecting Nagini, not a failure on Ron’s part.

What is Bellatrix favorite spell?

Voldemort, like Bellatrix, enjoyed causing pain and using the Cruciatus Curse, while Harry had a signature spell, Avada Kedavra, which was quick, clean, and without mercy. Harry also had a talent for the Patronus charm, which was taught by Lupin. By his fifth year, Harry was so adept at casting a Patronus that he saved his cousin Dudley’s life, impressed the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and began teaching his fellow students how to cast it. This impressive feat, as Madam Bones, the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, proclaimed, was a testament to Harry’s skill and dedication to the art of magic.

The employment of the Avada Kaddavra spell in the confrontation between Dumbledore and Credence in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is clearly discernible within the filmic narrative.

What spell does Grindelwald use?

  • Newt was such a likeable protagonist and all of the Fantastic Beasts movies should have been about him protecting magical creatures from dark wizards. Not to mention he’s a gifted wizard too, no doubt he spent hours creating and perfecting spells specifially meant for him to protect the creatures from the dangers they encounter

  • Newt is one of the most power wizards ever lived, no really, people dont realize that but lemme explain, he is able to use a lot of spells (not just the simple ones) without finising studies at Hogwarts, he stood against Grindenwald few times and always survived, he knows how to use and utilize a lot of power from his beasts. Dumbledore said it right when he sent him after GW to Paris.. I picked you coz you have never sought the power, but Dumbledore knew how powerful Newt rly was. Now imagine that Newt would be interested in the power, he would finish his studies, he would learn deadly spells and curses (he would be capable of that, if he had wanted to)

  • Lore talk and real-world drama aside, Newt and other characters this prequel tend to use magic in such varied and interesting ways. Getting to see more of what an relatively normal adult wizard can do and seeing magic used for even the most mundane or complex of tasks really adds a level of awe to this fantasy world. This versatility is certainly an upgrade from the previous films in the portrayal of magic, with previous films tending to simplify magic to energy bolts complete with a stun and kill setting and rarely giving significant focus to its more utilitarian uses outside of a few instances. Even combative uses get more varied, especially when Gellert comes into the mix, throwing cars, turning ropes to snakes, summoning lightning and of course the ring of animated, enemy disintegrating fire that evolves into fire monsters. The closest the older films got to this was with Albus and Tom’s duel. Not to devalue what the previous films offer, but I do still enjoy the contrast.

  • It’s so dissapointing how the last two films turned out because this first one was great. I think if they just left it as a stand-alone prequel film for fans where Newt stops a random dark wizard (or maybe a follower of Grindelwald rather than the actual guy) it would have been much better. Then instead of having to get into all the lore with Dumbledore and Grindelwald and stretching the story way too much it could focus more on the magical creatures and how Newt met Tina.

  • It makes me so sad at the fact that the fantastic beasts franchise didn’t get as much love and attention it deserves. Now this is my personal opinion, but I think the fantastic beasts series is better than the Harry Potter series. I just really wished it had more attention to contribute to the full development of this series :((

  • Unpopular opinion The sheer amount of magic being thrown around actively in Fantastic Beasts devalues the appearance of magic in the franchise. In the original series magic actively being cast highlighted the whimsical nature of Hogwarts life or sparingly drew a gravitas to a particular threatening event. Its relatively rare active use among the students/professors and a passive whimsical existence in mundane items is what made Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and others have that original HP feel.
