Watched your review of the HP45L back in early March. After ten years of upgrading my previous HP and studying many gaming PCs over the past 14 months. I bought a fully loaded HP45L at the end of March, arrives tomorrow. I have worked over 30 years in the aeronautics industry working & designing avionics integration laboratories. I used my HP corporate benefits account for an awesome discount. Now it is time for some fun, thank you for your review that led to this purchase!
I have a HP Omen 45L with the Intel i7 processor, with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, and the NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3080. It cost me around $1900 at the time I purchased it. I have had no complaints about it. Maybe in the future I’ll upgrade to the RTX 4090. I would have to get a more powerful power supply though. Mine power supply is only 800W. This new version of the HP OMEN 45L will cost you about $4950.
Thanks for doing another review of the 45L! The first article was great, but I was wondering if anyone would do another review because if you go on youtube most reviews of the 45L were from last year and not from 2023. I was trying to find reviews of the 45L with the RTX 40 series and 13 gen Intel CPU’s. This seems to be the best review so far. Great job 👍
Another great article! I was wondering what your thoughts on the Omen 40L are? I was looking at the one with an Intel i7 and RTX 3070ti. I don’t know if you’ve got that one, I couldn’t find a article about it on your website, but still I imagine you can probably tell pretty easily if a PC is worth it or not…
Hey Justin I’m planning to buy a new PC next month. I’m still undecided what to get budget is around 4k. My two picks is 2023 HP Omen 45L or VENGEANCE i7400 Gaming PC, i9-13900K, RTX 4090. Seems the Vengeance actually decreased its price by $100 recently. With almost exactly the same specs and price which would you recommend?
Hey Justin – I see this model you are showcasing you indicate in your article that it is 32 GB of RAM but when I click the first link for the HP OMEN 45L it’s only for a 16GB Ram unit? Did you upgrade your unit? As I am unable to find this unit but with 32GB of RAM. Loved the review. Totally sold me on it.
I bought mine in September of last year on Amazon, got it for something like £2,720 (about €3100) with the 32GB DDR5 Kingston Fury ram the 4080 and the 2TB SSD, honestly price aside (because they’re not cheap) I love it, runs like a dream, it’s hella quiet to the point the first few times the fans kicked up it took me aback, but it’s not a bad thing, it does a good job of intaking cool air and exhausting hot air, none of my internals run overly hot under load and I haven’t met a game yet that I can’t run at a high frame rate. If you have the money I highly recommend, Or if you see them on sale I recommend them even more.
Thanks a lot man, this article definitely helped me make my choice; I just bought an Omen 45L. It’s currently on sale at Best Buy for $3200 but my configuration only came with 16GB of RAM… but buying a little more RAM is a small price to pay for a pretty good deal on a 4090/i9 13900K machine all things considered. It’s gonna get here in 3-5 days and I’m hella excited!
Thermal camera footage is cool. Your editing is looking good. However, in your last few articles i think the Alienware desktop is getting knocked a bit unfairly. The R15 seems to have a pretty strong performance in your benchmarks, you mainly point out the negatives about the price. And while your screenshot is correct, it was listed at $5k, but Dell pricing is kind of fake like Kohl’s or TJ Max. Their list price is almost never the price it is actually available for. The Dell website generally has some random sale almost daily, and if you take the time to call in or talk in Live Chat they will almost always knock the price down. You can most likely get the R15 for a comparable price to other systems with beefy specs.
Hey man! Great article! I was wondering if you could answer a question of mine. I got my omen 45L around 6 months ago and I recently put it under my desk (I KNOW ITS BAD FOR TEMPS) but I have a 3070 and I was wondering if there is any way to get better airflow under my desk. I can really feel the heat when I am sitting down and I doesn’t bother me but I’m sure it’s not good for the cpu. I stay around 55-65 on small load and 65-80 on high load. I also wanted to ask you if you know if the omen 45L can have a vertical mount attached because I LOVE THE WAY THEY LOOK. Could you let me know your thoughts. One last thing is how do I know what kind of psu cables I need to get because I don’t like the stock cables and I really wanted to get a new cable for Gpu and motherboard!!! Thanks 😊
I have the 2022 45l with last year nvidia 3080 and i7 12th gen. IT was cheaper than Alienware and CLX, but HP used the cheaper older ddr at the time. Maybe the MB too. I ended up buying more ram later. I just want a quiet power ful pc at the time. It is quiet and still powerfull. Maybe not 4090 and i8 13th gen. Yes, the case design is cool and easy to open. Idon’t overclock, just wanted something reliable.
I currently have an XBox Series X and looking to get a gaming PC. I mostly play games like Forza Horizon 5, and the other Forza games. I also play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, assassin’s creed series, Far Cry Series, F1 2022 etc. I’m also looking to get into Iracing which is PC only. And eventually VR will be in the picture. I’m looking to get a gaming PC that will play all these games at the max settings without issue but I don’t know that much about PCs so I don’t wanna buy too much for what I need. What would you suggest I don’t think I’ll be doing any kind of creating with the PC or anything like that strictly gaming stuff. However, I would like upgradeability for later on
I bought the Omen 45L and then discovered that there is not a single PCIe slot available with the RTX 4090 graphics card installed. No way to add 10GB Ethernet or Firewire or a USB 4.0. I sent the computer back to HP and will be going with the Lenovo Legion instead that does provide for adding PCIe cards to the motherboard. HP has room inside the case to have a full size ATZ motherboard but elected to use a min-ATX for no good reason and so cut down any available card slots. Might as well buy a laptop with the 4090 GPU when there are no expansion options with the tower.
My experience with two in the last 13 months is “unreliabale ”: first failed within 3 weeks ( RTX3070 no article) was replaced by HP within 3 days (great); the second failed 13 months later ( out of the 1 year warranty) windows doesn’t boot anymore ” error 3F0 “. Mine is the HP OMEN 45L GAMING GT2-000x i712700-KF with win 11. It never was used for for gaming, but for mostly article editing, and browsing. NVMe was tested, ok, all test in the “EUFI” reported everyday was ok.
The omen brand of prebuilds are pretty underrated . i have the 5800x omen 30l with a rtx 3080 and 1TB ssd NVME, 16GB XMP 3200 (3247 OVERCLOCKABLE RAM) and ive had no problems with it other than the proprietary parts like the motherboard. So no real bios like on normal board. however you dont really need to go into the bios like that for any reason really to be honest. And the upgrade path is pretty decent, although i have a 5800x i can put a 5900x in this omen 30l motherboard and it will work perfectly. when it comes to prebuilds i say the only one id get is from omen HP. but if a company is going to build you a pc out of the parts you picked than that is way better of course.
Maybe its different in Canada. But with the Alienware R15, I can get it on sale at one of the best prices for a pre build with its specs. Even throwing a 5 year onsite repair warranty on it, its on par price wise with the MSI computers with 1 year mail in warranties. HP Omen 45l with a 3080ti is running over $5000 which is crazy. They don’t offer the computer your reviewing here. I can only imagine how much its cost in Canada. Honestly I am jealous with the choices in the US market.
Why is it I always watch these articles AFTER I make my purchase? 🤣🤣. Anyway, I just purchased the OMEN 45L Gaming Desktop GT22-1470se. I won’t bore you with the specs but I paid 2,300 after all is said and done. I’m sure this machine is going to scream. My HP 11 year old machine is still serving me well. Even at 11 years old I purchased it with 32 GB of RAM!. My new Omen has 64 GB which is too much but hey..why not, right? Thank you for the great article!!!
I want to turn the e-cores off in the bios but no CPU options are available in my 45L 13900KF machine. Does anyone know if disabling the e-cores settings are hidden behind the ‘extreme mode’ that is locked in the bios? HP says the if I unlock this, my warranty is void. Please help! Thanks in advance.
50 pounds? That is ridiculous. Nice review though, I appreciate how you’ve been very truthful with computers made by big logos like Dell’s Alienware systems. Truth be told, they aren’t a great deal compared to the specs of other prebuilts, but the separate compartment for the AIO is an awesome idea. What size was the AIO – 360mm?
Throwing this out here to perhaps persuade some buyers elsewhere.. I bought the HP Omen 45L around mid 2022. Ever since Ive gotten it; it has been nothing but issues. A plethera of bios updates to fix my PC from hard freezing during gameplay. Being forced to use the Omen app that locks all of my settings and resets them every update(at least 2x a month) I’m now experiencing issues where my PC will not shut down properly, it freezes when its restarting, and I’m constantly having to restart this 20lb hunk of garbage. If youre willing to take the chance than go for it, but id never purchase from HP again after this. 2k in the trash
I have the 3090 version of this from like 3 years ago and it’s the biggest pos I’ve ever used. Thermals are the worst. Doesn’t support custom ram. Overhears and just shuts down at least once a day 3 years later. Do not buy unless they redid their thermals (looks like they added that cooling thing up top?)
Can anyone explain to me how or why THIS 4090 and THIS 13900k are junk? How are these “prebuilt” components worse than components I’d buy from Amazon? The mobo I get, it doesn’t even have expansion slots, but the PSU, GPU, CPU, SSD, and RAM, look legit to me. Just look at the benchmarks – with no overlocking. Honestly, I’m just trying to learn, thanks guys!
It is important to notice that HP void the warranty by simply doing overlock, much lower score in certain benchmark, and lower 1080p gaming seem to indicator they limit the CPU in certain way or maybe it’s the 4000mhz RAM, which is the slowest one for flagship model. The 1440p and 4k average only has less than 1 fps more than r15, well fall into margin of error range. I think Alienware has better value if you can buy it on sale. In fact, I just ordered mine 2 weeks ago for $3400.
It’s a shame that these OEMs hinder cooling badly, reduce their motherboard quality so overclocking is pretty much obliterated, slow arsed ram reducing performance, use, generally, sub standard cooling and then charge a premium for the privilege…….. I’d look at a SI for the money and get much improved performance (above criticisms removed ….. mostly).
If you have problems with the GPU on this HP, the motherboard has no HDMI or DP ports on it if you have a non F CPU. There can be no UHD graphics without the port. You do see a ton of people asking if the motherboard can be swapped, and that’s probably why. It can be done but theyu say the wires are short inside and the fans are all non standard.
I purchased a brand new HP Omen 45L from the HP website and they sent me a USED COMPUTER. They then proceeded to delay and refuse an exchange over and over again. They lied to me repeatedly and the customer service experience with them was terrible. If Justin is interested, I have many photos of the filthy inside of this supposed brand new computer HP sent me. Of course, he is more likely to just delete this critique to keep the free products rolling in but if he is interested, I would love for his help. HP was rude, lied to me over and over again, and made the process as painful as possible.
To anyone still upgrading these, a tip for prying the bottom panel without a tool: slightly push the corner of a plastic card into the rear exhaust grill and lever the back of the panel up, it should snap off easily, giving you plenty of space to slide the card under the panel and pop the other sides. I’ve left a couple of scratches on the bottom and the side of my laptop trying to pry it from the front without a proper tool before figuring this out, don’t repeat my mistake.
Hello fellow netizens. Im very happy to share that i have successfully upgraded the 60hz omen display to 144 hz one. I had to find 40 pin cable as the 60hz one has 30 pin. I have already upgraded everything shown in Jarrod’s article. The display is lgdo5fe. 6.4 ms in mprt test. I sourced every part from a service personnel who works at HP. Display and cable cost me 4250 rupees or 58 dollars.
If your taking upgrading so far, please remove the factory cooling paste and reapply it yourself. In my unit I found out these vram cooling pads were totally misaligned and the cooling paste on cpu and gpu could also be largely improved. Seems to me like a no brainer to do when opening up the machine.
I have the same laptop but the intel i7 version. I was looking at replacing this but nothing really much have changed with the newer versions except for the GPU and they are more expensive now so I decided to just upgrade the 16GB ram that comes with it to 32GB plus adding 1TB SSD to the 512GB that comes with it.
I purchased an omen laptop a month or so ago, but I’m having problems with the power supply. The brick gets extremely hot. I played a game (Back 4 Blood) which the laptop runs flawlessly, but the power brick was coming in at 160+ degrees F after about an hour. That was so hot it wasn’t safe to leave on the floor. I contacted HP and they sent out a replacement charger, which did exactly the same thing. At this point I’m thinking I’ll have to return the computer, since it’s not safe to use at its full capacity. None of the reviews I saw mentioned this as an issue, so I am very surprised that it hasn’t come up. Seriously, this brick gets hot.
Bought an omen 15 around December of last year. After 2 months of use + league of legends gaming the laptop gave out a message saying “the system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly”. I’ve already looked inside of the laptop to check if there’s some dust stopping the fan but found nothing inside. having it sent to the repair center, it seems there’s a problem with the motherboard. It’s being repaired as I type this message, but it’s kind of a let down to have such a laptop stop working in a matter of 2 months after purchase. Just wanted to let people know…
i upgraded my omen battery on the cell level adding more cells in parallel i can play witcher 3 for 13 hours and 49 minuets. take the wrapper off the battery so you have access to the batteries pcb and solder 2 powerlines to the batteries output allowing the other end to come out of the laptop. build a 4s lithium battery of any size you want and connect it to the power lines coming out of the laptop as the laptop uses power it will automatically take from both the internal and external batteries making the whole system last longer
Hey Jarrod, some of us had issues with Lan drivers due to a bios error when using the windows virtual machine platform for Windows subsystem linux. An updated BIOS F.12 was pushed through windows update, but you need to be in the windows insider beta ring last I checked. This fixed a lot of network driver and BSOD issues people were having. I tell you this as it may be worth trying the WiFi again with the F.12 BIOS
Hi Jarrod, thank you for the great article. I’m considering getting the Omen 15 as my new mobile workstation, switching from an older Dell XPS, however I would really like to get 64GB of RAM (I’m developing java apps with quite high memory requirements). But your article is the only place where I found that 64GB is possible. All the local resellers and even the official HP materials says that 32GB is the maximum. Do you think that I can run into some problems or is HP for some reason downplaying what this machine can handle?
I would really appreciate some help and advice here. I’m having an extremely hard time deciding on a laptop to buy. My budget is $1500 – $2000 though I’m willing to stretch it a little more if I see more value. I don’t play any games whatsoever. I use photoshop a lot and recently I have been interested and learning to do some article editing and audio production with Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition. Everything works fine on my current laptop except for Premiere Pro which won’t even run. It would also be nice if Photoshop and my audio production software would run faster. I currently have an Ultrabook 2-in-1 with touch screen (Dell Inspiron 13 7378, 2018 version) and it’s very outdated for me and just doesn’t meet my needs any more with it’s integrated Intel UHD 620 GPU. You have to understand I didn’t even pick this laptop to buy it was simply a $400 bargain 2 years ago in a brand new condition and I just ended up liking it until I started looking into article editing. I don’t want to invest in a desktop setup now since I move a lot, a laptop is a must for me. Last year I was very excited about Huawei Matebook Pro X (2020 version) and I’m so glad I didn’t buy it! But then I got excited about the new Dell XPS 15 model with touch screen and GTX 1650 Ti until Nvidia announced their RTX 3000 series so I decided to wait for the new laptop models with the new GPUs. The dilemma I have right now is this: 1- My laptop is not good enough for my needs by any means, I have been waiting for quite sometime now but I need to buy a better performing laptop sooner than later.
I had this same laptop for 2years until i upgraded to the Alienware m15r6 but the omen was my first amd laptop and i refuse to go back to intel. I gave my son my old omen 15 and got a used one for pretty cheap that needed a power cord i got for my daughter and it still is a great pc. My kids play warzone and many other ganes including halo and of course Minecraft and roblox it is a great option for those who are looking for a gaming laptop
I have this OMEN with the same specifications and it is very good, the stock temperature went up to 99 degrees playing games but making some adjustments it does not exceed 75 degrees. It came with 1 TB SSD and I added another 1TB SSD. The fan when gaming hardly does so because I use a cooling pad to maintain temperatures.
Great article. Are you having same issues with graphics cards drivers? Last time HP released one was July 2020 on their gaming series… If I use one from Nvidia or Amd I get only 2 hours battery life since the dedicated GPU does not get suspended. Not sure what’s the solution here. Being stuck on unoptimized drivers or having crap battery performance?
Hi, I bought the HP Omen 15 couple of weeks ago. It has a 500 GB SSD installed and has another m.2 slot free. I have partitioned that drive into similar sized disks ~(160 gigs) C, D and E… I was thinking of additional storage to the laptop but I’m confused about how I should do it. I have two questions regarding it: 1) Today I read that it isn’t advisable to partition SSDs and that Windows C drive should be kept in a separate SSD drive for optimal performance. Is there any truth in that? Should I delete the partitions I created ? 2) If I am going to add storage, should I add a 256 GB just for the C drive (this is in relation to what I said in Q1) or should I wait and get a 500 GB few months later ?(if there’s no truth in partitioning leading to issues) Before I got this laptop, I had the same desktop for almost 10 years. In that one, I had Windows installed on a 320 GB HDD with no separate partitions and I added 2TBs of HDD storage for media and other stuff few years later. I know the more storage, the better it is. But I’m very very confused. This device cost a good sum of money and I want to do what’s best for it. If I get It would be of great help if anyone could please advise me on how I should do it. Thanks, Ab
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Only a simple question : Can I Upgrade my new HP Victus 16 (Intel 11.800H /8GB RAM DDR4-3200 /3060GTX 6GB) with a couple of Corsair 16GB DDR4-2666 RAM Modules (Total 32GB) from my old DELL Alienware 15 R3? I really don’t want to invest in more RAM, but I really need those 32 Gigs…
@Jarrod’sTech Hello I have a question if you could be so kind to help. I’m looking to get a gaming laptop and going to spend around 1100-1400 what would you recommend for best gaming performance as well as build quality? Should I wait? Do you know of Ryzen systems that are coming out soon that offer 3000 series gpu? Any advice you could give would be appreciated thanks!!
Are the plastic clips actually doing anything? It doesn’t seem like they’re essential to keep anything in place (like the hinge cover in MSI laptops). Could you confirm if the screws are enough for the chassis to look and function correctly? I’m sick of having to baby the clips on my MSIs, but I wouldn’t mind them breaking in a laptop in which they are non-essential.
I have a doubt … I have asus tuf a15 with 48wh battery (11v rated) could I upgrade to 90wh battery (15.4v rated) ? I think with physics it’s not possible but the circuits might support .. it … Plz make articles on asus tuf a15 upgrades too … I am going to upgrade the screen and 3d print a new bottom panel Asus tuf a15 ryzen 7 1650ti upgrades ……… 👆👆👆👆👆👆
After 2 years my laptop’s battery finally gave up holding charge. Will look into replacing it. In the meantime I’m still debating on wanting to keep this Omen. The fans in this thing run on max even when I’m on idle especially when the power brick is plugged in. I really liked this laptop but these fans are loud AF. Any fix for that? I’ve read that it’s a manufacture fault in how it was assembled. Anybody else have this issue? I’m thinking of replacing the battery and selling it asap.
Very insightful article, thank you for these upgradable options. Now I have a curious question can this Omen screen is upgradable from 60 hz to higher 144 or 300?? as I have a 60 hz version with 10th gen i7, 16 gb ram and rtx 2060. also 512 gb of storage. so you see my point here I have a good graphic card but not so good screen. Is it possible to do a screen upgrade?
I changed the battery but i keep getting the cmos screen everytime and now when my pc shuts off i cant sign in for 2 hours because it keeps happening and may even shut off while off the charger out of no where when freshly charged. I reinstalled the battery and im certainee it out it in correctly after the 5th time, im so fed up
Bought an Omen with the same specs and love it but how do I know which battery size I’ve got? Battery life has left me a bit disappointed. I understand it’s a gaming laptop but I use this for school and lose 1 percent per minute idling on OneNote, this is at the better battery life setting too. Any help appreciated.
Hey Jarrod, I have the same laptop and upgraded to two 32GB RipJaws RAM sticks, but there was a problem, the screen wouldn’t turn on. After some troubleshooting I found that the BIOS was the problem, I updated to V16 and it worked. However, recently I discovered another issues, where tha laptop would restart when I started pushing the RAM. I believe it is due to insufficient power from the power supply( 200W one). Have you encountered anything like that and do you think a more recent bios version and/or a more powerful power supply would fix that?
Hi, I’m quite new with upgrades and I still don’t know what to use for my HP Omen. I have the HP Omen 15-ek1060TX and I honestly have no idea what to buy to be able to have a bigger memory. I currently have an 8GB SK Hynix 3200MHz on each of my memory slots. Would you be able to help me or suggest what SSD Upgrade can I do? Thank you!
Heyy Mann, I bought this laptop few days ago, everything’s running fine but i didn’t notice that my chair was no top of the charging cable was is there same position for around 2 hours (70kg on wire through leg of the chair) It’s charging the laptop but I’m concerned if it has damaged inside which will cause a problem sooner .
Hi. thanks for this article. Today my HDD in my OMEN 15 pooched out so I am online looking for how to replace. My laptop is a dc0030nr from 2018 and looks different from yours. If I am going to change the HDD, I may upgrade RAM too. My problem is finding out what parts can be added or upgraded. Even going to the HP site doesn’t, I cannot find this info. When I bought the laptop, I am pretty sure I recall a reviewer like yourself stating the SSD drive and the memory is not up-gradable. Can you walk me through this? Here is my model, product number and serial number dc0030nr, 3WE66UA, 5cd8342nvq Thanks
Thanks for the article. I have some problem with my adobe photoshop. it said (could not save as “file.jpg” because there is not memory (RAM). Tray saving without optimization or as baseline JPEG) is the problem will solved by upgrading the ram? I use HP OMEN 16-b0172tx with 16 DDR4 memory 8×2. I plan to upgrade the RAM to 32GB 16×2 Thank you for your feedback.
Hp sold me this laptop with the worst possible issues that a laptop doesn’t notify you about (event,2 kernel tracing and event,41 kernel power) and basically told me it’s my fault for not returning it within the 7 return day policy, but as stated before you have to go into windows event viewer to even see these errors I’m not a technician! So now months later my laptop is experiencing critical errors and I’m stuck with an almost unusable 1400 dollar computer
I was curious if it’s possible to operate the laptop with the battery completely disconnected or removed? I use my Omen 15-ek0013dx laptop plugged in at home the majority of the time, and in 6 months of usage I’ve noticed the battery capacity decrease from 71,064 when new to 62,500mWh currently (command$ powercfg /battery-report). So if I can just physically disconnect/remove the battery to keep it from excessive wear then that would be great, but I don’t know if it’s even possible or if it might ultimately damage other components instead..
my omen 15 came with 16gb ram and for my work load it doesnt seem enough today i had spotify open a youtube article open and a word doc and a bit more than 44% of my ram was being used and idk why minecraft isnt a super demanding game as far as ik but when i play with friends i barely get 60 fps and more than 77% of my ram gets used idk why so i considered a ram upgrade from 16 to 32 or even 64 all would have faster memory read speed the omen 15 factory is 3200mhz and i was wondering if i could use 3600mhz or even 4k mhz the question is more ram = more performance and is more memory speed = more performance and can i use more mhz than the ones that came from factory if yes then by how much
