Wanted to add – 12:53 the word נחש in that case is translated as the word Guess (Nah-esh) which gives us the answer : they weren’t allowed to “assume” or determine through things that happen to them or around them whether it is worthwhile or not to do things, when there is no rational connection between the sign and the fact, an example for that is when you go outside and see a black cat and assume/guess (לנחש) your day will go bad.

In my history of interpretation class, we discussed several texts among the church fathers on “the Belly Myther at En Dor,” beginning with Origen, that attempt to interpret this text. It’s very interesting, though I don’t know if it’s directly beneficial for your research. The question I had while reading these texts is why did 1 Sam 28 garner so much attention among the church fathers. I think the answer I would give is because the text was so troubling to Christians reading their Bible (the LXX) in that they were catechized to rid themselves of all magic and be baptized unto Christ, but here, smack dab in the middle of their Bible, is this text that seems to condone those magical and occultic practices.
I loved this article. One thing that kinda bugged me is how Endor is combined into one word even though it really should be “En” or “Ein” Dor. Its like a town in Israel Ein Gedi. Based on the nature of the sealing, as well as the fact that nothing was broken or disrespected like it was at a gate temple at Lachish, he came to the conclusion that it was done possibly by the soldiers stationed at the fort. Based on the margine of error in the dating, he also concludes it was possibly sealed during the first half of the 7th century, placing it during the time of Hesekhia (how do you spell חזקיהו in englisg I have no idea). Other archeologists (whom I forgot the name of but that notion is aggreed in both Tel Aviv and HUJI) have also came to the agreement that josiah most likely hasnt done any major religious reforms, and just like the kings of the northern Levant he was affiliating himself with the acts of his grandfather Hasi (yeah I’ll name hesekiah hasi from now on xD)

I’ve been saying for decades that the Bible’s apparent occult terms were never defined and nobody seemed to really know what they mean. Nobody listened to me and I got into some bitter arguments but nobody came up with good counter arguments. Christians just assume that the Bible condemns everything we, today, think is “occult” and insist this is the case, with no evidence.
The Witch of Endor summoning an Eloheim makes me curios as that sounds similar to a Shikigami, or a ritual god summoned by Onmyojo diviners in japan. They were a familiar of sorts created from the ritual and given life from the summoners magical power, but were dangerous and could kil their master. But the conception of a Kami is very different to western gods so I’m not sure on it. It’s possible this was written when YWHW was replacing El Eloheim and so Eloheim was being in a way demonized as a servant of sorcerers and necromancers.
Also about the act of Linkov (לנקוב): From what I could find in the archeological record of the levant, during the middle and late bronze age (ca 2100-1200 BCE) there was a practice of stabbing clay bricks of figurines which had a name or a collection of names on them. Sometimes these clay clums had nothing scribled on them. The names listed on these artifacts are of locations or individuals, but as far as I could tell there were no gods or divine powers mentioned, of any kind. So perphaps this ban is more so a specification on a practice that was remembered from the past, and less of a ban on a practice that was done by others. I have heard that a m’khasheifah is supposed to mean specifically a type of a woman mage, that does evil spells like you know, curses to put on cheaters for the wife’s or evil eyes. I know this article is old and you only very briefly mentioned the subject, but have you read the book Child Sacrifice in Ancient Israel by Dewrell? He argues that the “mlk” rituals aren’t dedicated to a god Moloch, were adopted during the reign of Ahaz from their Phoenician neighbors, and were directed towards Yahweh. I’m not entirely sold on all of his arguments, but there are Punic stele mentioning a rite of the same name where they burn children with to some sort of vow being made. And if it existed in the colonies, I don’t think it’s much a stretch to say the practice existed in Phoenicia proper. There’s every chance that I’ve no idea whatsoever of what I’m talking about, but is there not good reason to suppose that various, if not all forms of divination might be prohibited because of their potential to do harm by misleading those for whom the operations are carried out? Any moron who’s spent enough time in front of a reflective surface practising looking spooky and grave might look at the clouds and depress an entire community of already desperate people by prophecising drought in a well-practised doomsday voice. My Daughter was raised in Church. Her and her Father and I all got saved and Baptized. About a year or 2 ago, she messed around with a homemade Ouija board. There was a time, while my father was alive, that he was led by the Holy Ghost to save people from the deadly ones in his highschool. He was brought up to be a fighter by God. Even while he was starving and tired, he found himself being led into dangerous situations by the Lord for others’ sakes around him, because the Lord knew he could take it. I’m only seemingly able to take blows and guard the ones I come across, and the ones I love. As well as heal, and speak in tongues, and call on the weather and fire. We stick to our strengths God has given us.

For me as per my understanding of the text is that, when Samuel was raised from death he warned king Saul by telling him that,that day was going to be king Saul last day and indeed we see Saul taking his life by falling on his own sword by he had been hit by the spear and he probably die,his armbearer refused to kill him,so he did not want to be found alive by the Philistines.

These are eye opening messages. I have a question concerning the condemnation of all the characters mentioned to be put to death if such spirits or acts are found among them. I believe that God choose Jacob’s house (from the same man he promised, Abraham) to be his people for specific reason. To be his Worshippers. The question therefore is, What about if God first Commandment to is chosen people was the reason for these prohibitions, to ensure his dominance and authority? Also to make sure that apart from him no man can and shall know more than what they should know because in the act of interpreting omens and conjuring spirits through any medium, the original sin will continue to exist among them. Finally, we know as the Bible put it that God is not God of the Dead but of the Living, because we learnt that Moses and Elija appear to Jesus Christ and most often God is attributed to as God of Abraham, God of Isaach and God of Jacob. If necromancy was not possible, there would not have been written commandments against it within the Torah that we are to follow. Many claim it wasn’t really Samuel who was called forth, but the Bible says it was Samuel. It doesn’t say it was a demon or devil in disguise. I believe it would have if that were the case. Now we are replaying the whole thing. There is a new Saul and a 2nd Samuel, which is David. The most important argument confirming that it was indeed Samuel who was summoned and interacted with Saul is not mentioned in this article (which is a bit shocking), but is found in a scripture that took place years earlier in the story – 1 Samuel 15:35. After Samuel reproves Saul for not obeying the Lord it says CLEARLY, “And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death.” And that’s exactly what happened. Samuel is summoned from the earth and within 24 hours Saul is dead in battle. Therefore we see that the Samuel that is summoned by the witch is the same as the prophet who interacted with Saul during his life on earth.
I believe it was the real Samuel sent not by the witch but by God to prophecy against Saul. The witch was used to impersonating spirits and she was shocked when she saw the real Saul and realised it was Saul. God acted outside his law not against it. His law is for our good. Saul ended with a full assurance of damnation. Solemn.
The evil in Saul was none other than Satan. This conversation is such a parraelel to the garden. Saul disguised himself and the woman knew that she would be judged by God for commiting sin. He therefore swore by the Lord himself that she wouldnt be harmed. Does that not sound like, “you shall not surely die”?
You really nailed this issue of what happens at death. So many people and websites get this wrong. It’s like 99% of websites. Even people I strongly agree with on many many topics get this wrong because, I think, it’s embedded in minds from media and mystery religion teachings. It frustrates me to death that people can’t get this one straight. It’s so clear that sheol is just death or the grave but some verses are poetic in it’s use so people want it to be true. Jonah crying from sheol while being in the belly of the fish and Samuel being called from the dead are two massive stories used. The 3rd is Lazarus and the Richman but clearly this is a parable to the pharisees, who at the time, are steeped in the mystery religious beliefs and see the purification of the ‘soul’ in fire as something that is reality sort of like purgatory. It comes from Babylonian thinking. That’s why they use imagery of fire especially in the NT. In all of Matthew, ‘Jesus’ says gehenna which gets translated as ‘hell’. They then translate Tartarus and sheol as ‘hell’ but in reality the lake of fire is only mentioned during the time of judgement and death and sheol are thrown in the lake of fire with everyone else who fails the 2nd test which is called the 2nd death…. not the 2nd eternal life in ‘hell’ but death. Only the fallen angels who are in an abyss chained up and then the false prophet, the beast, and devil are ever said to spend any time conscious in ‘hell’ fire or a burning lake or in the abyss of the earth.

She (the witch) raised Samuel or made a way for Saul to consult him. That’s what the scripture says. Those other explanations require that you come to conclusions that the text doesn’t suggest. Why would Saul have come to this woman if it was not widely believed that she could communicate with the dead? That’s what Saul punished people like her for, not because they were good at theater. These were Necromancers, these old Hebrew women like the witch at Endor. You should take that passage at face value. Samuel warned Saul from the darkness of death. Saul recognized the old prophet.
samuel told saul to wait until he got there to perform the scarifice, but saul didn’t wait and god didn’t accept Saul’s sacrifice. Then saul becomes jealous of David and runs to the Endor witches. Saul tricks the witch and asks to speak with Samuel who already passed. Samuel says to saul, “why did you bring me up…. tomorrow you and your sons will be with me!” (1 Samuel 28:19)
For those who think that Christians are conscious with Jesus immediately after the death of the body, I have two questions: 1. Why did people who were resurrected in the Bible (and there’s at least 5 of them) never have anything to say about Heaven? Proof from Scripture, please. 2. If the PERSON is conscious in Heaven – supposedly knowing and feeling and seeing and loving, etc – then what was the point in having a body in the first place? Or do you think Satan imprisoned our souls in the flesh, like the Gnostics teach? 3. Don’t answer my questions with a question. That’s cheating, and you know it.
Funny how professed Christians believe that thing that was summoned by the witch was Samuel, the prophet of God. Read: Samuel 15:23-35 it states that Samuel saw Saul no more till the day of his death. That doesn’t mean that the prophet saw after his death, it means he never saw Saul again in his lifetime. The LORD departed from Saul and an evil spirit took over him. “But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.” 1 Samuel 16:14-15. Saul rebelled against the LORD, therefore the LORD rejected him. 1 Samuel 28:6. No magic user can ever operate on God’s behalf. Exodus 22:18, and Deuteronomy 18:10. Nowhere in the Bible dose it say that God ever spoke through a witch or wizard. God never changed His Word for any reason, especially not for Saul.
While the witch was performing the ritual to summon demons, Samuel suddenly showed up. This frightened the witch so much that she left the scene. She’s not expecting it. To me it was really the spirit of Samuel who showed up. This is a rare exception. The message here also is to respect our departed love ones and not try to make contact with them anymore. Jesus inaugurated the “safe zone” when he spoke with Moses & Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration. If we read the Scriptures, we find that controversial passage found in 1 Samuel 28. This passage created great controversy among the Fathers of the Church. In fact, at least three distinct interpretations can be found. 1. The woman called Samuel forth from the dead (Justin Martyr, Origen, Ambrose, and Augustine). 2. Whether it was Samuel or a demon, it appeared at God’s bidding and not by some magic of the woman (Chrysostom, Theodoret). 3. The entity was a demon who deceived Saul and gave him a false prophecy (Tertullian, Hippolytus, Ephrem the Syrian, Evagrius, Basil, Jerome, Ambrosiaster, & Gregory of Nyssa).

As an Israelite I am fascinated by the fact that our history is the focus of so many other people when our relationship with OUR G-d has nothing to do with anyone else. Its quite unsettling to see two groups of Caucasians fighting over northeast Africa. The demonic nature of so many people is horrifying.
It says in the word not to have dealings with mediums and sorcerers because they speak not with the dead but with evil spirits for the dead are asleep and know nothing of the living. So this medium that Saul spoke with used her witchcraft to terrorize and deal revenge on him, because in the beginning and during his reign he sought out mediums and sorcerers to kill them; so it was hypocritical that, when he was cut off from the spirit of the Lord, he sought out one of the last remaining mediums in his kingdom and that he did so in secret is telling. It’s no surprise that it led to his death.
Apostolic Churches such as all of the Orthodox Churches have always had Wisdom Of Sirach as still part of the Biblical Cannon. While Non-Apostolic churches and Evangelicals/Protestants hold it as Deuterocanonical or apocryphal. In either case the book shows the traditional understanding that it was Samuel who spoke from the grave. Verse 46:20 states,” Even after he fell asleep, he prophesied, and showed the king his end, and lifted up his voice from the earth in prophecy, to blot out the wickedness of the people.” – Sirach 46:20. It was Samuel. The Bible says it was Samuel and it seems to be confirmed by Sirach 46:20. Many heretical sects removed the Wisdom of Sirach and Maccabees partly because of the witness of deoarted saints who were seen praying for the living… but the Orthodox Church has kept it since Apostolic times.
Here’s how we can test that it was NOT the real Samuel: God does not sin. If He himself forbade necromancy and calls it an abomination, then he cannot participate in it also. Even the devil masquerades as an angel of light. IOW, the medium was infested by demons. The demons knew exactly why Saul had been ignored by God because they watch everything.

The doctrine of the ” soul sleep ” is a false doctrine. When they talk about the dead know nothing, for the memory of them has perished, they are talking about ” Under the Sun ” meaning the earthly man, the physical body has perished. But this doesn’t have anything to do with our ” spiritual self “. Even the saints we were martyred cries out for vengeance written in scripture. Here is a biblical passage which confirms that our spirit/soul is fully conscious after death. Spoken by Jesus himself. The Rich Man and Lazarus 19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.(a) The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.
Many preachers now are preaching word of GOD but not believing in what is written in the Bible. If it is written in the Bible that the spirit of Samuel who spoke to king Saul then believed it do not dig in. Like our lord JESUS said ”Today you will be with me in paradise” many preacher also don’t believed in this word of our lord JESUS because they apply human logic saying that it is impossible for our Lord JESUS to be in paradise on that same day.

Even though there’s a lot of people in here who have something to say about people who have gifts do know that there are many of us who are lightworker. We didn’t realize that we asked for this job but it was part of who we are and what our purpose on this planet is. And there are people out there who have gift but they’re not working for God they’re not actually in the light of God and I realize that. So do be very careful when you’re out seeking think you’ll be able to tell the difference if you actually talking to a lightworker. Because lightworkers don’t have little collar setup we don’t dress up like gypsies. We are just normal everyday people but you can normally tell. In my case wherever I go there’s always animal. This spirit world is more real than this physical world that we can see and feel. Even when we are around other people, we can feel and pick up on their spirits. Often times, we will hear someone say that they can pick up on or feel a person’s aura. What they actually feel and pick up on is that person’s spirit. We are also dealing with good angelic spirits and evil demonic spirits. The Bible specifically tells us not to interact with one that has a familiar spirit which is also a demon. We are to pray and seek after God until we get an answer. We are to pray and listen to the voice of God

Read other religion’s ancient writings, they are written there. The aliens and men, with their spaceship’s are carved in stone. In America, we have a “Serpent Mound”. There is a mountain top in Peru that is fashioned into a “Serpent Image”. That the fallen angel’s were messing with human’s DNA. Noah and his family were the only “pure” humans left on earth. The fallen angel’s were trying to destroy the family bloodline of Jesus.
Eccesiastes is speaking of the apparent futility and vanity of all things under the sun, not making a doctrinal statement. When parts o the Bible comment on this apparent vanity under the sun and states that the dead have no more reward and will not return that is not a doctrinal statement either… otherwise you would be rejecting heavenly reward and resurrection. It is clear that the dead body to all appearances knows nothing and has no thoughts

It is debatable whether, or not it was Samuel that came up. I tend to believe. No it was not. But I do believe Saul died in his sins. I also believe that what happened to Samuel. Should be taken as a strong dire warning. Not to act on our own in disobedience to God. When we have clear directive. Also under no circumstances are we to go to psychics, spiritual mediums. This also includes. Do not go to “Prophets” for a “Word from the Lord. “. But seek him only in and alone in his Word. The Bible and in prayer. He will answer us in his sovereign time and will. Not ours. Never force God to go your way. It will always lead to a bad end.
Deuteronomy 18:10 There should not be found in you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, anyone who employs divination, anyone practicing magic, anyone who looks for omens, a sorcerer, 11 anyone binding others with a spell, anyone who consults a spirit medium or a fortune-teller, or anyone who inquires of the dead. 12 For whoever does these things is detestable to Jehovah, Obviously anyone consulting a spirit medium would have Satan or one of his demons do the answering.
The most reliable perspective of this text to my brothers and sisters in Christ is: Satan had the keys of death and hades against humans till Jesus took it from him through His death and resurrection, so satanic powers could do it but God allowed it through His sovereignty according His will and plan.
Thank you for the article as it points out a lot of information about the subject matter but i want to know if you believe in hell and the lake of fire because you said the body returns to the dust it came from and the spirit returns to the Lord but what about the soul, what happens to soul after death.
I see no reason to doubt that it was actually Samuel. Also, it doesn’t say that Samuel was resurrected. Just that he spoke with him. Also, Samuel wouldn’t need to scold Saul for necromancy. Saul knew the law. Also, it’s not a problem for God to use Saul’s necromancy to deliver a message. God uses the sins of man for his own purposes all the time.
Even praying to Mother Mary in order to get her to contact Jesus is NECROMACY and also praying to dead saints for they are DEAD and can NOT HEAR you, ONLY JESUS died and rose again. My mother was into new age and I got into it, raised up in it, I even went to a new age church, oh yes they are out there, but it left me EMPTY inside and when I received Jesus into my heart as my Savior, only then did I have PEACE for satan can NEVER give you peace just emptness. The belief that it is YHWH, who is giving permission is ridiculous on its face, as scripture does not give prohibitions of things that we could conjure up in some way through the Most High Creator, it instead is trying to impart upon us a deeper spiritual understanding of the nature of the world that we live in, and that these things are not only possible, but have serious if not deadly consequences. Neither we nor certainly not a witch could tempt, the most high into being complicit in wickedness. It is far more in-line with all of scripture to understand that this witch, who much like the story of the amalekite king, was allowed to live even though there is a Prohibition against it. This clearly indicates the depravity that one would fall into when in disobedience to the Most High and HIS Word. Not to mention Shemu’el, scorns and rebuked Sha’ul.
The main thing that Saul did that caused the Lord’s mercy to depart from him was when he Kills the Priests at Nob. Killing the all of the Priests was shedding innocent blood. This was way worse than anything else he did. Saul ordered the death, not only of Israel’s chief priest, but also of 85 other priests. THAT IS A LOT OF INNOCENT BLOOD ON YOUR SKIRT!
Maybe it shows that we don’t play when the occult because there is a power there though not comparable to living God. It’s the only time in the Bible where we see this so maybe God allowed it to consummate sauls sin(s), she was surprised. Samuel doesn’t address the woman’s son as she is compelled by the king and this story is climaxing the finality of sauls tragic life.

I very much doubt if that statement that the dead know nothing holds water, because without such knowledge how can Moses and Elija minister to Jesus Christ? I believe that Solomon who said that was induced to say it with his mortal wisdom since he has not experienced death yet. Knowledge is infinite and goes beyond the grave I believe since the spirit goes back to his GIVER and leave the fleshly garment here.

Why does a God,who is all powerful,who had unlimited ability who in the 10 commandments said ” thou shalt not kill” would he require Saul to exterminate a neighbouring tribe,men, women, children and animals, when this God was perfectly capable of doing the dirty work himself??? What sort of god would encourage the Jews to comitt a war crime of ethnic cleansing.
It seems like every Christian forgets how deceiving Satan and other demons can be when it comes to this story. We know that human souls cannot be conjured up by witchcraft or any craft. Period. Our spirit bodies are in one of 2 places and thats it, we can’t come back from hell to visit grandma or vice versa. This is a familiar spirit, an evil spirit pretending to be someone you know. Hince the “familiar” spirit. Dont be deceived people please, there are no mistakes in the Bible. Samuel wouldnt have come up from hell, he would have ascended from above probably lol.
I hate when scholars try to intrepret what is written. It states that he was brought up from the dead. The author knows the truth, and would have said it was a trick. Is there other examples of when God was deceitful?? Is it okay for God to break his word? Psalms 101:7 states 7 No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence.
If this was an illusion then Ezekiel’ dry bones and Christ and lazarus would have been equally a farse! As well Jirus daughter and Jesus would eqally stand! The reason for the devil wanting Moses body; what would the body prophet if it cannot be used. If the gospel speaks of King David laying in his tomb as where a treee that falleth so it is! Why condemn a practise that ussless! Wantin the hings of God without the law or otherwise wanting to use the law but rejecting a relationship….Lord grant us the staying grace!
