Charlie the Tuna is a popular cartoon mascot and spokes-tuna for the StarKist brand, created in 1961 by Tom Rogers of the Leo Burnett Agency. StarKist Tuna is owned by Dongwon Industries, a South Korea-based conglomerate. Charlie is one of the most recognized characters in American advertising, dressed in a red beret and thick glasses. He was initially a commercial-only mascot, later replacing the fisherman on packages.
Charlie the Tuna is based on actor-songwriter Henry Nemo and seeks to get the attention of StarKist by performing tasteful acts and mixing up their slogan of “Good tasting Tuna”. He has been winning over consumers with his good taste for 60 years, and commercials usually feature the phrase “Sorry, Charlie”.
Tom Rogers, a retired advertising copywriter, died in Charlottesville, Va., where he lived with his son’s family. The iconic mascot, Charlie the Tuna, has been a part of StarKist’s advertising for over 60 years, teaching consumers that they couldn’t believe everything they see on TV and turning them into more than just a product.
StarKist Tuna is now owned by Dongwon Industries, a South Korea-based conglomerate. Charlie the Tuna is known for his hipster-looking design and his ability to change his tune in 50 years.
