“Rude” is a pop and reggae fusion song by Canadian band Magic!, released in 2013 and 2014. Inspired by a real-life breakup, the song became a global success with a popular music video featuring a marriage proposal. The song reached 1 on the U.S. Billboard charts on July 14, 2014, peaking at 2 in Australia and New Zealand and 6 in other countries.
The song was released as the band’s debut single and topped the Hot 100 chart. It made it to platinum in New Zealand and gold in Germany and Switzerland. In Denmark, it was streamed 7.8 million times, making it to platinum platinum. “Rude” is an amalgam of two smash hits that rode the Top 10 together in 1993: the Spin Doctors’ “Two Princes”, from which it borrows its hey-pops-let-me-marry theme.
Magic!’s debut studio album, “Don’t Kill the Magic”, was released in 2014, and the song was originally released as a promotional single. The story behind the song is about lead singer Nasri Atweh getting rejected by his girlfriend’s dad. Olivia Newton-John spent four weeks at 1 in 1980 with her song “Magic”. When “Rude” reached peak position 34 years later, “magic” became the first word to reach the top spot.
Magic! made an album track with former Number Ones artist Shakira, toured a bit, and played a couple of shows. The trend of Reggae Rock proudly continues with “Rude” by Magic!, making it a memorable and influential song in the music industry.

This song always puts a smile on my face. It takes me back to my former job. When my co worker and I were under pressure trying to meet deadlines this song would come on the radio and my co worker and I would sing along to this at the top of our lungs and it gave us that extra push to get things done.

My girl introduced me to this song. It was her favorite song and it also became my favorite. She left me telling that she never loved me and she was just takingf whatever we had as a way to pass time. It crushed me however this song always reminds me of her and how I loved her. I remember asking my dad why he was asking the lady’s dad. He told me that usually, a man had to get the woman’s father’s permission. I thought it weird yet romantic at a young age.
