When Does A Ranger Get Back Their Spells?

When a ranger chooses to replace one of their known spells when they gain a level, they no longer know the old spell and can’t cast it at all. They cannot change the spells they know again until they gain another level. Rangers don’t prepare specific spells from a larger set of known spells in the same way that some other classes do. Instead, they can always cast any of the spells they know, provided they have a slot of the spell’s level.

The Ranger table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level. Bards, Clerics, Druids, Eldritch Knights, Paladins, Rangers, Arcane Tricksters, Sorcerers, and Wizards regain their spell slots after a long rest. Only Warlocks regain slots after a long rest.

Long rest always recovers the spell slots for all class. Some classes can also recover spell slots without taking a long rest. The answer is that warlocks recover all the spell slots after a short rest while all others are after a long rest. The long rest just effectively increases from 8 hours to 9 hours duration. There is no reason a party shouldn’t do this.

When a ranger chooses to replace one of the spells they know when they gain a level, they no longer know the old spell and can’t cast it at all. At 10th level, with 15 spell slots, it would take at least 15 hours/short rests to fully recover unless you happen to be a Druid of the Land or have a long rest. You regain all your Spell Slots when you finish a Long Rest. Depending on the color of the number of the Short Rest Spell Slots table, you can also regain Spell Slots.

Hit dice do not fully recharge on a long rest, but you gain half of your level back in hit dice. For example, a level 6 warlock would restore 3 hit dice after resting, bringing them back to their max of 6. However, if they use all 6 hit dice on their short rest, they would only have 3 hit dice until their next rest.
