The term “crisis actor” has gained attention recently due to conspiracy theorists accusing survivors of the Douglas High School mass shooting in Parkland, California. This theory has its origins in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, where anti-vaccine activists falsely believed Henry Dyne was a “crisis actor” pretending to be sick with Covid-19. Since the 2012 massacre, a standard component of these conspiracy theories has been the claim that the incident was an orchestrated one.
The term “crisis actor” originated from a trained actor, role player, volunteer, or other person engaged to portray a disaster victim during emergency drills to train first responders. The fringe right is racing once again to generate some theory to cast doubt on the mass shootings, and this is where the “crisis actor” conspiracy theory comes from.
Conspiration theorists claimed that student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were really “crisis actors” hired to play the part of victims. MediaWise teen fact-checker Isaac Harte debunks a crisis-actor claim and explains how and where these types of narratives began. As with so many mass shootings before, the fringe right is racing once again to generate some theory to cast doubt on the mass shootings.
Over the past decade, the fragmentation of public narrative has created a political culture in the West where conspiracy theories like crisis acting are entering the mainstream. Over the past 10 years, a growing online community of conspiracy theorists and hoaxers known as “truthers” has come to question the official narrative.

📹 Inside the ‘Crisis Actor’ Conspiracy Theory
We dig into where the ‘crisis actor’ conspiracy theory originated from and talk to Professor Stephan Lewandowsky about why …
So All Conspiracy Theories Are Fake ?? Humans Never Conspire ?! And Corruption Never Happens ??? I struggle with this concept just as much as I struggle with believing that every single conspiracy theory out there is true as well .. I think a case by case approach would be better rather that arbitrarily deny all of those theories in one clean sweep ..
So by her ‘logic’ they must be entire communities of actors in places where bad things happened all playing the same part for the rest of their lives just incase any reporter ect.. ever needed to do a follow up…Imagine having to play ‘Bob the school janitor’ as an actor to no camera or audiance for the next 50 years to keep the illusion going..,who pays you ? Do you get time off ? do you have an understudy ? a union ?
I still don’t know why, there are 0 murders listed for Newtown, CT on the FBI Crime Satistics for the year this massacre happened. So, FBI stats are wrong (which is scary) and the conspiracists are wrong, or the statistics are correct and the conspiracists are right (which is also scary). Which one do you pick? 🤷♂️
Step 1: I dont believe in crisis actors. Step 2: a friend tells me about that father laughing and then starting crying when the cameras start to roll, in the sandy hook thing. Step 3: it takes me a lot of time to find the complete article, without the laughing part edited out. I find it. Step 4: Watch more articles and read more comments about things that “dont add up”. Step 5: Try to find articles that disprove the conspiracy theory, but only finding articles saying you are stupid if you doubt. I think probably there is no conspiracy out of mass media telling half lies all the time to favor their prefferred ideology, but I understand how people thing its all a staged thing at this point.
Youtube used to be a lot more free back then. There were open discussions and uncensored articles. The reasons why SH conspiracy started was because there were multiple footages of the scene propped up like a movie before reporters shot the news. It made people skeptical and those footages were indeed suspicious. AJ took the heat and blame because he was a popular
It’s about time a debate platform such as intelligence squared for example steps up, stops ignoring the elephant in the room and facilitates a debate around conspiracy-theories once and for all. Bring together a panel that represents the best arguments from both sides, and by that I mean real representatives from the conspiracy-spheres, not only experts that have studied conspiracy theories, but the ones who are actually representing the movement, and are respected in those spheres. For example: David Icke, Simon Parkes, Sacha Stone, Jay dyer, Sean Stone etc. If it’s all crazy bullshit, then bring it on stage and expose it.
Only thing you got wrong here VICE is the fact that David Hogg wasn’t at school during the shooting. He was at home that day with his sister. He claimed he was “dodging bullets” in the halls while he was actually at home perusal TV. David Hogg has used that tragedy for personal gain which is appalling. Claiming he is a “survivor” is the same as claiming David Suzuki is a climate change activist while he flies in his private jet or lives in one of his dozen mansions he bought using the money gained from the donations he’s received for lecturing about climate change. You gotta ask yourself how much wealth has David Hogg made off of his speeches about gun violence?
Here’s a strawman test: The next time a conspiracy theorist claims to have researched a subject, have them verify their investigative skills by procuring a particular book from a library without a librarian’s assistance. Then, have them pull court records on a 10 year old case, without the use of the internet. Next, have them go to motor vehicles and pull their own driving record. ….most won’t be able to accomplish even one of those most basic investigative tasks with the “skills” they have.
I always thought David Hogg and Greta Thumburg had alot in common…but the one occasion which I thought was weird was the guy in the wheelchair after Boston bombings….he was wheeled up right in front of all the media after apparently having both his legs blown off at the knee but was still able to sit up straight and be conscious…what was odd was the guy in the cowboy hat didn’t think to take him to one of the many ambulances they passed to get him medical attention but thought it more important to parade him in front of the cameras…weird
Every single engineer who has build a hut (not to mention a house or a building) knows that 9/11 was mined from inside out. There is no way that a plane that weighs couple of hundred of tons of aluminum can endanger a building that weights couple of thousands of tons made out of steel and reinforced concrete. And even if it did came to structural collapse, those floors wouldn’t collaps in the way that they did. Firefighters heard massive detonations seconds before towers collapsed. A building that wasn’t caught nor on fire nor it was impacted by any plane (WTC 7) was also “demolished” in the same way. So there is your smoking gun. Who benefited? And for what reason? We already know. 9/11 was a well coordinated and well executed job. How Larry Silverstein acquired the WTC buildings and how he “insured them” and after that how he BENEFITED full insurance payment is remarkable. Not to mention that 9/11 was an EXCUSE for U.S. to go to war in Afghanistan (that had nothing to do with 9/11) and later against Iraq (under false accusation that Saddam Husein has nuclear weapons). Later 9/11 was used as an excuse for a war against Libya and Syria. Which speaks for itself that entire thing was staged. Only people walking out of this mess with their full pockets are industrialists from military industrial complex. And that’s pretty much it. It’s not a theory when it becomes REALITY.
I think you should have made it more clear you were talking about mentally ill conspiracy theorists and not coming up with theories that a given situation involved conspiring to a clandestine end. I mean, this just happens all too often. There ARE conspiracies *all the time*, and sometimes there is a little edge of the paper curled up to know just that sole fact alone: something’s off! We have been fucked over so many times, how can you just talk about how wild they get the whole article xD
9/11 is in fact a sketchy one. Dunning-Kruger is in full effect with uneducated fools calling doubters “conspiracy theorists”, but a large group of those doubters have extensive engineering educations… To discount them as conspiracy theorists off hand is laughable. Sure, many if not all of these sketchy events are “random”, but having 9/11 on that list bugs me. These engineers (at least when I first randomly saw a sticker) explained how they dont believe, and/or dont want to believe there was anything suspicious about it, but their centuries of combined education go against everything they saw and heard about it on MSM. That’s a unique one out of “conspiracy theories” and still makes my stomach a bit unsettled
We all know the journalist sit together in a room ask questions like “how can we get more accurate information to the public? I don’t care about making money or selling ads.. we need honesty!” They don’t care who tunes in and they’re not worried about Clickbait …they just want to have their integrity known and the truth be known we all know that …come on
Here is another big problem- we live so much of our lives through the media. Our immediate world is small, yet we have global connection. We are all recipents of facts and information that we can’t verify. And we know that media is a human institution influenced by money, ideology, expediency and compulsive habits. Not to mention the perceptual limits built into any form of media. So people start to doubt everything they see and hear…
You gotta love how the entire time they were mocking the topic and making it out to be a joke.. once again, this is a tactic of theirs. I also really love the fact that they forgot to add any of the MANY articles that show PROOF of this whole ” conspiracy ” being true. There are Crisis actors that have appeared on more then one article at different shootings… Those people have also been link with crisis acting companies as experienced crisis actors. Once again, if you don’t do the research, you’ll never see this but there are articles on YouTube about it. Certain websites that go out of their way to expose the truth.. I don’t care much for the bigfoot or alien stuff but when something really catches my attention, only after seeing so much evidence that I can no longer ignore it.. then I become interested and this is one of them.
we have prisons full of really bad people that planned stuff, millions. and as we seen on january 6th, obstructing government processes isn’t a problem for the well off either. after 9/11 the military got a bigger badder budget, with psy ops having a major role not only in other countries but in our own. i’m not saying any one theory is correct, i am saying dismissing the idea as ludicrous is counter to the facts, our history, and our future as a democratic republic.
If you don’t think there’s evil people out there that work together (conspire) to carry out evil plans then you’re just plain naive. If you know this is true but try to just dismiss it or cover it up, you’re a liar. If you cover it up, you’re lieing to others. If you dismiss it, you’re lieing to yourself.
Why would I react to the conspiracy theories or the news for something I myself have not witnessed or been participant to… neither seem plausible, weather it’s 9/11 or it’s random conspiracy theory… there are always facts missing on both sides; making contingency plans and investigations what they are… sometimes a useless ketchup joke… and sometimes an olympic bombing hero… I wouldn’t know I wasn’t there for that one either… But the principles by which good and decent people have been living their lives, before mass media was interested in playing containment games with people forming their own internet opinions; and doing their own internet research & PUBLISHING (or NOT), is the difference in cultures between: … fad viral articles… …reactionary establishment containment… …and sharing facts, or… … not perusal your P’s & Q’s by not keeping your opinions & quacks to yourself… If you don’t have something nice to say…
and there are some of us who do not like to be lied to vice news have u ever thought about that ? and there is absolutely nothing wrong about being a conspiracy theorist becuz to me that only means is that we do not like to take someone’s word for whatever happens becuz we are all individuals with the God-given right to think however we want
This is insanity to see, have hard evidence, admission etc and try to claim (gaslight) people saying its only theory. So many FOIA showing just how evil it is to jump on the side of calling people “conspiracy theorist”. Either you are ignorant of the many facts or despise truth at best,or you are a hopless liar and hater of truth.
Cool prof. Let’s focus our interventions more as therapeutic interventions and not evidence based debunking. I’m on board. I will say, there’s sometimes a roadblock to providing care to your patient. And it comes from the patient not believing they require care. Convincing them can be exceptionally difficult.
I love you Vice but this article has two huge flaws. You never explain what that ad was actually for. You can’t change somebody’s mind without explaining how people have misread the evidence. The article assumes that it’s more comfortable for people to believe their government is actively against them than it is for them to believe in a random school shooting. I definitely find it more comfortable to believe in the ladder.
Your all over it Vice…as usual. Thanks for proving more of the point by having a speak and spell snip of a real subject turned on its side. I swear you all be in with the craz n ties going on. You can tell when it’s bias towards one side without any logic to the other. Have you all made clip of entrapment and trap games!
